I'm a maybe!  Surely it's the S-199 and S-99?  I'm planning on a doing a full AM S-199 in IDF colours, but not until next year...Might do another before that though.

I do it because I have so many builds going on, and I like to wear badges. Hope that clears it enough.

I'll update the list.

And matt, I assume yours is in 72 also?

Hi Rudy,  If there is no time limit on this GB then I would like to join with a 109E-3. I just started a 1/32 Hasegawa a couple of weeks ago and have just finished the office and engine.

Well I signed up for the spitfire GB first and I did start it, but now  it's on hold. It seems I used parts from this kit at one time or another.  I just orderd what I needed.  So I guess the 109 is getting built first. I have decided to do yellow 5, flown by ace Horst Petzschler of jg 51. I've built this aircraft once before but my skills have much improved since then.  I will post pics soon of my lack of progressSmile [:)]

Hey Rudy,  told you I was very busy with a lot going on. Here is where the 109e is. Finally got the fuselage together with the office and engine finished. No Am at all on this one but I have to come up with belts for the seat. The engine I did take some artistic licence and put my own wiring here and there and also put some colour into it to break up the dark colours. Hope you guys like it.

I cut off all the controle surfaces to reposition them but now I have to figure out how to fill the gaps and give them some support. The oil coolers will also be a big problem as they will all have to be cut off and rebuilt. Loads of sheet styreen in my future. Any suggestions.

Steve.

Rudy since you say I can combine this with other GBs, I also have a Bf-109b1 (1:72) from Heller that I'm doing for the Spanish Civil War GB.

Hmm double the fun!  Last year around this time too, I did two Fw-190d9's at the same time and it was great fun. One was for the Langnase GB (1:72 Hasegawa kit) and the other for the Battle for Germany GB (1:72 Airfix Kit).  I think I'll do the double build again, this time with my Bf-109s.Tongue [:P]

Looking good Rafhart.

Progress! (but no pics yet, I'l post them soon) For both 109s I have the cp in and fuse together.  Wings and tails will be going on this week and who knows, maybe some paint too?  I used to not really build 1:72 but lately have really enjoyed that scale as you can bang off a couple builds quickly.

Can I jump in with a Ha-1112? I'm a bit new to these boards. I have one that's inprogress, I started back in december and is about 95% finished, and a S-199 in the early stages.

Let me know, and I'll post some pics.

Was wondering if I could join in the fun.

Got a really ancient (from 1988) Hasegawa Emil-3 that I'd like to see put together.

Im not a big expert on German fighters, but it looks like a sweet little kit. (if a bit old)

Thanks!

Yup, that is the academy/hobbycraft kit. Nice kit, goes together well. The only tricky area is the wing cannons. A little filler (mainly under the nose), but all and all it goes together pretty well. A bit sparten in the cockpit (not really an issue for me). I've got 3 more in the closet. Plan to build one in the silver over azure scheme, one camo scheme, and one in "Battle of Britain" markings.

Tgregory and Daywalker, give the guy a break! Rudy's a student with tons of work to do, ever been in that situation?  Real life also tends to get in the way of modeling too. Be patient, he has apologised for not updating the new comers and gave his reasons.  I'm sure you can start your 109s and carry on even though your name isn't on the first page yet.

BTW, I finally have some progress pics.  These were taken two weeks ago and the builds haven't progressed any further as I am trying to complete a Spitfire mk9.  Enjoy!  The one with the resin tail is a Bf-109 G6 and the other a Bf-109 B2.  The G will be as one of Hartmans and the B as a Spanish Civil War Condor Legion bird.  Enjoy!

Alright, I'm gonna post pics of my '109 hoping that's OK.  It's a Tamiya 1/48 109E-4 Trop done with kit decals (Black 8), mostly OOB with a resin seat.  I started the painting yesterday, and finished the lt. blue and the spinner.  Here is where she's at:

Was asking myself the same thing about the preshade.

Its so subtle that I was wondering if it was a trick of the camera.

Looks nice, and the spinner is sweet!

Thanks for the kind words!  I really had my fingers crossed for the spinner, hoping it would turn out as well as it did.

As for the shading, I actually prefer to use post-shading on my aircraft.  After giving it a base coat, I mixed an ever-so-slightly darker mixture and lightly followed the panel lines, then mixed a lighter version of the base color and sprayed that in the open areas between the panel lines.  Then, one more heavily thinned coat of the base color to blend it all in.  A lot of work, but I think it really stands out.

Painted the sand color today, here is where she's at:

Next up, the olive green spots.  Today was the first day I got to use my new Badger double action 'brush, so I am still learning with it.  I will probably take a few days to practice before I try to freehand the green.

BTW, did you ever receive that P-47 gear and wheels I sent you?

Itl probably end up being a G4 or a G6. Who knows what designation the G had with Late wheels and no breech bulges in the engine cowling. If they do...Thats the one im building lol

That sucks.  I remember a few years ago I sold something to a guy on Ebay in Canada, and it took almost 5 months to get there.  Hopefully that's not the case here.  I really hope they show up soon.  Disapprove [V]

Well, got the last of the decals on this morning.  The box decals were quite thick, but I tried a technique with 'em and it seemed to work out.

Thanks!  I just received a first for me today- a resin, photoetch, and styrene major conversion set to turn a TA-152H into the ultra rare TA-152C-0.  Will be cool when it's done, but looks to be a huge undertaking.

Daywalker, that looks fabulous!  I like how the spots turned out.  Scott knows my problems but I'll let the rest of you know too, I am currently in the middle of some minor renos (repainting my basement) and it isn't quite finished and my model desk is currently a storage center for boxes, so all builds are now on hold.  humpffAngry [:(!]

Hi All, its finished. It seems that the last finishing touches took forever. Had a mare with the rear cockpit and superglue. I didnt go too mad on the weathering as this is a plane that was in the desert. Just a slight toning down of the base colours with some light pastels and a light wash. Really enjoyed the build apart from the cockpit issue and a tailwheel that broke off lol. (That will be sorted when the correct shaped one arrives from Hannants) All comments seroiusly appreciated. If you would have done something differently, i want to know. Its the only way to improve. Thanks...Guy

P.s Can i put my Group Build logo up now?

Hi Espins, it was a watercolour wash, i think Dark Umber. There was nothing technical about it. It was a small squirt of the umber (About 10mm long) and diluted about 20:1 with water. Then a big squirt of something SWMBOd's keeps under the sink. Dishwasher detergent i think. Using a very fine brush you can keep the overspill of the wash to a minimum. Clean off any overspill with lots of cotton buds.

Luftwoller and Daywalker and Rafhart. Bow [bow]Bow [bow]Bow [bow]Excellent work on the 109s Daywalker, I love the whitewall tires.Thumbs Up [tup] I am almost done with my entry, an MPC 1/24 Bf-109e. Finished adding brass rod to everything that broke off and primed it tonight. I sprayed the decals with Testors decal stuff and hope it works because I cannot find any 1/24 decals anywhere on the web. Will post photos soon. This thing was very, very warped (23 year old kit) and it took major surgery to straighten it out. The well detailed engine won't be seen because of cowling issues, the cockpit canopies required major buildup of the cockpit using sheet styrene and rod to get the canopies to fit. Losts of putty but I am getting used to that now with the old kits. It started out as a fun build, then I hated it, now I respect it and every modeler who can take these kits and make them into what you guys here have done. Excellent work all of you. Tony-

Looking good!  We'll keep our fingers crossed that none of the paint will lift.  Have you ever tried using Tamiya tape?  I used to use the blue painters tape, but after some paint lifting problems, I switched over to the Tamiya stuff.  Have not had a single problem with it.

Masking tapes tend to be a bit too sticky.  I'll use masking tape to mask large areas, but I stick it on my shirt a few times and lift it off to get lint on it to tone down the stickiness.  Clearly you wouldn't do that when you're masking an edge say on a splinter scheme as the lint will encourage paint to suck up under it.  But it does work great if I'm just trying to covor large areas so I can spray a tail piece, or nose.

Tamiya tape works great as it's just tacky enough to get the job done, without damaging the underlying paint.  Smile [:)]

Looking for tips. I was thinking about a mask using card stock or even masking tape with the pattern cut out, but that would take four years, seven months, thirteen days, and six hours. I'm not willing to invest quite that much time.Cool [8D]

If you have a decent double action air brush, try free handing it.  Here is what seems to work best for me:

  • Use highly thinned paint
  • Get in really close with the airbrush
  • Keep the airbrush moving at all times, even when paint isn't actually coming out
  • While you're moving it around gently and quickly pull the trigger back ever so slightly, then rock it forward again as a bit of paint hits the surface of the kit.  This will give you light, gentle and random mottle patterns.

The key is thinned paint and gentle rocking of the trigger.  If you pull back too far, you're going to get a blotch.  If you don't keep the airbrush moving, all your mottles will have the same, circular appearance and you run the risk of paint building up in one spot way too quickly, thus creating runs and other issues.

Experiment with that techique on some scrap or even using a blank sheet of paper until you feel comfortable and in control of the technique.  Experiment with the thinning ratios as well to help maximize the softness and subtleties of the mottling you're trying to replicate.

I hope that helps.  Smile [:)]

Hey guys, just in case any of you are interested, here is a 1/48 Classic Airframes Bf109D that I completed two weeks ago.  I did mine with Condor Legion markings, as a plane flown by Werner Molders during the Spanish Civil War.  It was a challenging kit, loaded with tricky resin and PE parts.  It was a great learning experience, but it pushed the limits of my skills to the max!

Ok, i know im being a bit previous here, posting pics b4 youve said its ok, but here goes. I was in my local hobby store and saw this plane. I thought i knew most of the models of 109's but this one was an 'A S' apparantly (Correct me if im wrong) it was just another larger HP version of the DB 605. Its a little strange in the fact it has a rather wierd paint job, camo. (Accurate, according to box art and Instructions apparantly) It doesnt have canon 'Beules' and it has 2 rather strange wing covers. Ive got to do a little more research on this model as its quite intriguing (To me anyway lol). Anyways heres some pics.

ps Carpet monster ate the pilots armour. Grrrrrr. Perhaps the pilot removed it to see better lol. And no matter how hard i tried i couldnt stop the decals from silvering.

All opinions gratefully recieved.

Those large, lengthwise bulges/panels were installed to accomodate the larger wheels that were installed on that particular version.  The 109 had a notoriously weak and tricky landing gear.  As the 109 got heavier with larger and more powerful engines and additional armament was added to deal with Allied bombers, the gear needed to be beefed up to handle load.  Shock [:O]

Take a look at say the Bf109G-14.  It has smaller bulges, but was an interim upgrade with bigger wheels.  The one you're building (Bf109G-10?) had even larger wheels, hence the larger bulges over the wings.

Clearly at this point the small airframe of the Bf109 was past it's prime and all those fixes were more band-aid solutions when a new design was really necessary at that point in the war.  Whistling [:-^]

I got some time the last few days to work on my 109b and g.  I got some more painting done.  The 109b needs a coat of future and then decals!  The 109g still needs the yellow panels then some future and decals!  I'm not too happy with the G camo/mottling.  when I put on the rlm75, it went on very smothly with nice misting.  When I did the rlm74 it was watery and not very nice, it splattered pretty badly and I even tried three different mixes with thinner.  Not happy, but with acrylics in 1:72 and with a single action AB I guess it will have to do... Getting closer.Smile [:)]

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] gzt, I'm not in charge around here but this is a year long build and I see no reason not to Sign - Welcome [#welcome] you.

I have the decals on my 1984 MPC Bf109-e and have given it a wash. The decals were horrible and THICK I gave them a coat of testors decal sealent and they still broke apart. If I were not so blind I probably would have put the decals in the correct locations and right side up. It's always something with me. This has got to be my best build and I will post as soon as finished. I still need to replace broken parts and give it some minor tweaks. See you soon.

Thanks Tony !

I will place my Tamiya 1/48 Bf 109 E4. I have Techmod decals but not decided which one to pick. I am strugling with fixing my Spitfire first and I hope I gain more experience soon. I would like to make a camo like this one:

but ... my airbrush experience is at the "very begginers" level - I just made my first camo (with an airbrush) on this one:

That doesn't look very "beginners" to me, good work.

I am waiting for my pics to upload to photobucket then I will post my version of the Bf 109e. I gained a lot of respect for thoses who make the problem children kits look good. I can only hope to get better with each build. This was a total monsterMischief [:-,]. The cowling did not fit the well detailed engine so I had to add strips of styrene to build it up. That meant that the cockpit had to be modified and the "hump" after the cockpit. I used a LOT of putty on this bird. I had to break off the rear rudders(?) and reposition them because the plane was WAY out of skew and looked like a drunk (not that there is any thing wrong with a drink or two or three or maybe a couple of more after that) built it on a Monday hangover. I think it turned out OkSmile [:)]. Maybe a little too much weathering. Oh btw I knew it as soon as I started spraying the matte finish. I forgot to mask the cockpit glass. I found new hope for us. I thought about a previous post about using brake fluid to clear up the frost that ensued. I Didn't have any. Liquid wrench works just as wellBig Smile [:D]

Here is my interpretation of an MPC Bf109e. The kit is from 1984 and probably explains the warpage.

109 complete 12

109 complete 11

The plate behind the pilot's seat had to be built with Squadron green putty then sanded and covered with bare-metal-foil

The prop blades have steel edges to represent wear.

109 complete 10

109 complete 9

I left off the gun covers to show the ammo barrels each hole in the cartridge was drilled out, along with the gun barrels.

109 complete 8

This is a big bird 1/24 scale

109 complete 7

Wrong decal on the left (starboard?) wing. The big white patterns belong on the bottom of the wingSign - Oops [#oops]

109 complete 6

Sorry about the focus, shaking hands.

109 complete 4

The spring on the antenna wire is made from thin speaker wire wrapped around a small finishing nail.

109 complete 2

I hated this plane, now I have come to respect it.

109 complete1

Comments, critiques, and suggestions for the future are always welcome.

Tony,

it looks to me you did a very nice job. This is  a huge scale :) I am using 1/48 - but this is a very realistic plane. The wheatering is really adding life to this plane. I wish I learn one day how to do it for my planes.

Pretty impressssive job !!

Rafhart, NICE job!  So here is my interpretation of the same subject, I just got on the main decals.  It is really neat to see how other do the same aircraft and how schemes differ from one modeller to the next.

and some of my spanish civil war 109b.  The rudder decals are giving me fits so I think I'll strip and then mask/paint it.

Hey-- can I get in on this?  I realize that I am the ultimate late-comer, but I'd love to hop in here.

Let me know!  I've got a Hasegawa E7, F4, and F2 that should be done pretty soon...

So here are my completed builds, one Hartman Bf-109 G6 and a Spanish Civil War Legion Condor Bf-109 B1, both in 1:72.  The Hartman 109 is the Hasegawa G6 offering with a Hawkeye resin tail and the Legion Condor is the Heller kit, actually a very nice kit, it had more CP detail than the Hasegawa kit!

Enjoy!  All comments welcome.
