Thanks for the pic dice, much easier to see the 2 tone grey paint scheme in that pic.

Well....I broke out the kit over the weekend, and start trimming and doing some basic assembly. Nothing much though.

I still haven't decided on a paint scheme yet, need to decide on that pretty quick!

I'd love to get on board. New to this, and I've only built a few armor pieces so far, but about 1/3 of my mini-stash is aircraft and I need a reason to tackle one of my wingy-thingies. I already have the R/M 1:48 A-10 on my shelf.  As my first aircraft in a loooong time, I will do it basically OOB, just adding the Verlinden accessory kit I have. Thinking to keep it simple and do the supplied "Let's Roll" version, 345th TFS, Maj Jill Long pilot. Becasue if there is anything sexier than a woman with a gun, it would have to be a woman with a 7-barrel 30mm cannon bustin' tanks! Wink [;)]

          I forgot about the Grey tones for the first A-10s.  I know that they were very similiar to the current paint scheme, but the A-10 has had so many cool paint schemes over its career.

ChasD25,

          to prevent confusion, when we talk about European I (also called lizard) paint scheme, that is the green paint scheme that was the standard on the A-10 till the Air Force switched to the grey scheme(I don't know what it is officially called) in 1992.

chasd25, that is a very faded two-tone paint job, you can just see the lighter tone under the reverse-scoops on the nose.

Is this one of the older overall grey schemes before Euro 1, or a very faded 2-tone?

RW and chasd25, I believe both your questions fit together in a way. Chasd25, all of today's A-10s have the same two-tone gray scheme even if it may be hard to see. Like I told RW in my response about when the A-10s went to the gray scheme, an A-10 only gets painted with a new paint job every 6 years (with a three year scuff-sand) so the two colors can fade making it hard to see the two tones. Also because the two colors are so close together to begin with a few years of sun, sand, and grease can hide the discrimination lines. Also different "lots" of paint can vary the amount of color difference in the two colors. I can say for sure (because they paint them in the building next to where I work) that all A-10s today are painted in the two tone gray.

This may be something you guys may want to remember when building your models, you can make them look older (or more combat proven if you care to think of it that way) by "fading" the paint on your models.

RW, the LASTE mod was a depot mod and I believe they did get painted after the mod was installed. LASTE started in 1989 and by the time they rolled through the mod line they were more than likely gray already. I can't be 100% sure there wasn't one or two that slipped through the cracks but, I have never seen a gray A-10 without LASTE...with one possible exception....make sure (this is for you also chasd25) that you are not looking at a picture of an early A-10 because they were first delivered to the AF in a gray scheme. In fact the A-10 carried 3 or 4 different gray schemes through the mid-70s to late-80s before moving to the Euro-greens and then to today's two tone gray .

Good wasn't sure. They started in 1992 and the last green jet was painted in 1998 (Osan). You see A-10s are on a 6 year paint cycle (down to bare metal) with a scuff sand paint (ruff it up and put a coat over the old paint) at the 3 year mark so, it took almost 6 years to get them all.

I'm curious as to what different overall grey schemes are being used.  Some appear overall light grey, others are the two tone grey scheme, anyone know the details?

 Just got my engine, and speed brake correction set today!

Thanks Dice.  I know that the LASTE mods were put in about this time, but were there any grey jets without the LASTE mods, or were they installed, and the plane repainted?

      Cwalker3 building the 1/48 R-M A-10

      Ken (Blackrider) building the R-M A-10

      Jon (CobraHistorian) building the 1/48 R-M A-10 and the 1/48 Hobbyboss A-10

      Tom (SanMan) building the 1/48 R-M A-10

      and me, Anthony (Reluctant Wanderer), building the 1/48 R-M

We are honored to have Dice and 72Cuda as advisors. While they won't be building models, they are most welcome here, and they have graciously agreed to provide advice an information on the A-10, and building her.  Dice has been introduced by Cuda.  Thanks Cuda.  Cuda himself is a former A-10 mechanic for the KC Hawgs, based out of Whiteman.  I know from what I read that the Hawgs are one of the most publicized reserve A-10 units, and it is an honor to have one of their former members here.

     As to a GB badge, we have four choices provided by Dice and Charlie.  Thanks Guys.  I loved all the pics.  Let's vote on the one that we want.  You guys can E-mail me your votes(please include the picture), and I will post the winning pic. Cuda and Dice, you may also vote, and display this badge.  Since you are actively a part of this, I think that it is only fair, if you want.

DICE is the one to go to for the new A-10C's he's seen them in person and most likely knows the A-10's in & out because he worked on them during DEPOT Level Maintenance, and most likely worked on the upgraded "C's" too. I, myself was deployed with them so I could only give you the basic configurations during OEF & OIF(the first 6 months only) and anything DICE forgot the add.

Was that a good Intro for you DICE?

Hey guys!

I'd like to get in on this too.  I've got a R-M 1:48th A-10A ready to go and will be ordering the new Hobby Boss 1:48th scale kit as well.  I'm debating on how to mark the Revellogram kit.  I'll probably do it in ODS Lizard markings and the Hobby Boss kit in current markings from the PA ANG (Since I'm a PA Guard guy...)

Not sure about weapons loadouts, but we'll see....

I'm in. I just got the R/M A-10 and am ready to roll. It'll be an OOB build as it's my first aircraft. Besides, a camo paint scheme and scribing panel lines should be enough to keep me busy!

Welcome to the 2007 A-10 group build 

       As you may have read over on the aircraft forums, I have been trying to set up

    

       1. The first rule is a gimme. It has to be an A-10.  It can be any scale, any variant:A-10 at any stage in its career, A-10B/NAW, or the A-10C. Anybody interested in the A-10C, Dice and 72Cuda will be happy to provide details to hlp you build one.

       2.You are free to build the A-10 anyway you want, whether OOB or Use of Aftermarket, or scratchbuilt details.  The important thing we are building an A-10, however fancy or simple you want it to be.

       3.This can be part of another group build, if that build allows it.

       4.What ifs will be limited to markings and paint schemes.  There are some pretty nifty experimental schemes that the A-10 has used in the past (ie the peanut or the dolphin schemes), and you are welcome to use them if the had gone into operational service. 

        5.Most importantly: HAVE FUN!Smile [:)]

      The start date for this group build is February 9, 2007

        The finish date is August 31, 2007.

         72Cuda has graciously volunteered to be the A-10 advisor for this build.  If you have any questions, feel free to post, and he will help you the best he can.
