Andy, to address your question about brushes, it really depends on what you intend on using them for. I have brushes for fine detail work (with both enamels and acrylics), pastel shading (flats with rounded-off tips), broad paint applications, drybrushing, streaking (paint streaking, not runnin' around nekkid! ), etc. For painting and shading, I like red sable brushes, which come in quite the variety and leave the cheaper brands for drybrushing. Some good shapes to start with (I prefer brands like Floquil or Winsor-Newton) would be a few detail brushes (3/0, 5/0, 10/0) and an assortment of wide flats (#1, #3, #4, #6).

Oh, and here is an example of the effects of a streak brush. Note the fuselage pattern on this Eduard 1/48 Fokker D.VII....

WOW!  Some nice looking models here.  Mike I really like the Navy diver.  Since we are getting to know each other by sharing ideas, backgrounds and other non FAA models.  I was wonder if you guys would share what your work space looks like?  Also if you use a paint booth, can you post pics.  I enjoy learning about the people I chat with.  Who knows, we all may meet each other someday.

Thanks, Roy! I've received a lot of positive feedback on that Navy figure, and I must say that it was really a fun build and a nice change of pace. Of all my models, my wife likes that one the best.

...and since you asked, I'd be more than happy to post a pic of my work area. I think it's a great idea! This is where it happens for me.....

Mike, Your work area is very neat.  Does it stay like that all the time?  I love the layout and am also very envious of it  As of now I do not have a work area or a spray booth.  I do not know if I want to set one up yet.  I just had a long interview with the recruiter for the Jacksonville, Florida school district.  She said that she would very much like for me to consider teaching middle school in their district.  So who knows, I may be moving to Florida this summer.  So wish me luck  Anyway, I really like your work area.

Thanks, Roy! Moving to the left coast and across the border gave me the chance to start from scratch with a new bench design, and I'm pretty happy with it.....and yes, that's about as messy as it gets, especially if my wife has anything to say about it, since her bench is on the opposite wall in the same room.

Want to also say good luck with your move if it happens. I hate moving (done plenty of it in the past 10 years), so I get real nervous when my wife starts browsing the real estate pages (even though she says it's just a hobby).

There are only 2 good things about moving, 1st like you said you get a fresh start on things and 2nd you get rid of a lot of junk.

Thanks Mike, that's some great advice re the brushes.  I'll do some hunting around for the brands you mentioned.  Did you go cross-eyed on that Fokker?!  That's an incredible scheme.

Holy cow! Darren, Bob, Dave.....that is some really impressive stuff! Just when I think this thread can't get any better, along comes more masterpieces on display. Those are some amazing models, guys! Keep 'em coming!

Andy, glad I could help you out with your brush questions. Would have been back here a lot sooner, but the power went out in our entire area. We were in the dark from about 3:30 Wed. afternoon to about 9:00pm yesterday (PST).

Oh, and on that D.VII? Construction was a breeze (Eduard makes some great kits), but those decals....yikes! They went on easy (the lozenge and all the rib tapes), but there's so dang many of 'em!

Yes, thanks all for the positive comments.  I am still in awe of the work being posted by all you other guys.

I hope all you northerners enjoy your holiday.  Ours is next weekend-however, mine is already committed to an 8-hour drive (each way) to visit my wife's sister & family.  At least there is a Hobby Lobby in that town.....and they are good in-laws and fun to be around....cheers!

Dave- that's some very impressive work!  I really like the Sunderland-don't see that one very often- and the Stuka-great weathering!

I finally managed to finish my Zero, glad to have that one off of my bench.  It was a real pain in the .  Sorry about the quality of the pics, I had to tear down my photo set-up since I am moving soon.  Thanks again Mike for the replacement decals, they saved my !

Frank your Zero looks great.  always nice to see them in something other than Green!

There is a reason why you don't see very may Sunderlands.  That Airfix kit is the only game in town and it is a real !

Roy, I would also like to see people's work areas. Will try to get a picture of mine sometime - nothing special, just a desk in the garage. Like many other's in this GB, I'm not sure how long I will get to keep it; we are trying to sell our house and I'm not sure what I might have in the future for a work area...

Dave, Also all nice, but I agree that the Sunderland is extra nice. What were the downsides of that kit?

Bob- Mine is the Tamiya 1/48 A6M2, and masking that canopy was really a bear!  I'm glad it is over.  Next time, when I build the Hasegawa version, I have some vinyl masks to help out.

Leon- The main problem I had was a faulty clear coat, after putting on all of the decals.  It was almost done, when disaster struck!  Ended up having to strip the whole kit and start over.  I posted details on my thread over in "aircraft" if you would like to see pics.

Mike- Congrats on 1000 posts! That calls for a lil' celebration!

Leon-thanks.  The Mustangs are the Accurate Minatures P-51A & F6A.  Lots of great detail, but some minor fit issues.  Still a great kit though.
