Will there be a 2017 GB for this one? If so I would like to join.

Mac -- nice scene. I especially like the guy with his head  in the cowling.  Adding figures doing something makes the modeling work so much more evocative.

OK, finally done with fifteen 1/400 L'Arsenal Swordfish in two different camo schemes. No rigging.  There are torpedoes under some and external fuel tanks for all.

L'Arsenal 1/400 Swordfish 1 of 2

L'Arsenal Swordfish 2 of 2

Construction wasn't easy (times 15) and many a Stringbag was sent to the maintenance depot to deal with collapsed struts. As to be expected, by the tenth or so Swordfish I got better at construction but let's just say I'm not planning on repeating this endeavor any time soon.

Crop those lil things are looking great for their size!! Impossible to rig? Maybe but I think the worst thingwould be finding something small enough in diameter to not look like sewer pipes between the struts lol.

Finally made it to shore on an islesomewhere's where there was a lovely lass that nursed me back to the bench. Whistling Seriously lol, life had reared its ugly head once again and am now faced with a much reduced area to live and have bench time, the upside to this abrupt and necessary move is that there are at least 5+ hobby shops within a 20min radius!!Propeller Begging the Admiral's obligeing pardon sir, I am hereby reporting for ongoing duties Pirate Unfortunately due to space availability I am going to have to shelve the Bucc until further notice. I am recollecting that the theme for aircraft is RAF? I have recently started an Academy 1/72 Sopwith Camel to get my modelling m-o-j-o going again. May I please change my build to this? Hard to say how much is complete with only 18 parts to the whole kit lol but it's getting there. Pics will be posted asap if this one is ok with the Admiral. To all HOOOWWWWWDDDDYYYYYYYY!!!!Cowboy

Four squadrons were present at Taranto with 815 Squadron in different camouflage pattern than the other three (see Airfile Fairey Swordfish p. 36-38). So, this required two sets of masking patterns, done with the trusty Silly Putty (works great at not leaving a residue and not lifting paint)

Next up -- figuring out how to mask in order to paint (bronze) the collector ring on the cowling

Started work on the fifteen (15) L'Arsenal 1/400 Swordfish that I purchased. My goal is to simulate the point in the mission wherein the third plane of wave 1 is just taking off, 13 more planes are on deck (wave 1 and part of wave 2) and one plane with folded wings is coming up the elevator.

Sourced 1/400 decals from Starfighter that are in better register than the execrable Heller decals.  Doing the tail numbers (e.g. "4L") is going to be a real exercise in patience with miniature Archer dry transfers - we'll see how it goes.

But, long before the dry transfers comes the painting. I decided to paint each piece on the fret rather than assembling and then painting for several reasons:

  1. Masking an assembled 1/400 biplane times 15 is impossible except for perhaps, the characters in "Fantastic Voyage"
  2. Decaling and stenciling an assembled 1/400 biplane x 15 is also impossible
  3. Rigging an assembled 1/400 biplane x 15 is , yes, impossible.

So, everything will get painted, decaled/stenciled/sealed/, removed from frets, then partially assembled, then rigged (main struts only - I'm not that nuts to do the tailplanes), then final assembled - with relevant touchup done as required.

Pictures to follow later once I have something interesting to show.  This is going to take many evenings.

One question for you guys .... best way to depict Swordfish 4L just as it left the carrier and before gaining any altitude.  I was thinking of a clear acrylic rod anchored in the bow wave that could support (without flexing) the 1/400 Swordfish.  I might try steel rod but to avoid flex the diameter+dark might be more noticeable than an admittedly thicker diameter+clear acrylic.  I'm open to other ideas.

Oh, Man, I'd need a lot more rum before I would try what you are doing.  I think you are gonna get there if a wave don't wash you off the side.  Two extra rations for this bloke!

Building my (first) ship model is hard work.  Here is a bit of progress..

Gentlemen ...start your photoetch...

A sample of the folding required for the 8 barrel Pom Poms (White Ensign Models).  Off to the right are some catwalks and carley float racks. I soldered these as they were going to need to be strong given the load bearing weight of styrene floats.

Folding in action. Really tricky to get the two(2) four barrel gun unit tabs to fit into tiny slots on one side and then to fold down the other side and hope the slots aligned with the tabs.  Each Pom Pom took me 45-60 minutes to slice from the fret, deburr, fold, and glue with some coming out better than others. There were six(6) in all.

And here it all is, awaiting to be primed. There are four (4) ammo boxes per Pom Pom (hence 24 in all) and each had two ammo belts so 48 ammo belts had to be folded and then attached without any positive attachment points.  Another couple of evenings of my life lost.

And here is the main mast in the right hand side of the photo. Sheesh - this was one of the hardest things I've ever done with my hands. It was always a struggle to decide whether to build up a subassembly off the mast and then attach, worrying that I'd mash it during the mating operation or to add the bits onto the mast as I went.  End result was a combination of the two approaches with mixed results.  Not everything got aligned as I would have liked.

In the left hand side of the picture, I glued some ledges for the catwalk. No such actual ledges on the real ship but you won't be able to see them once the catwalk is glued on after painting.  You also see a template I made to drill out holes for the ?? funnel guys ??. Why I didn't do this before I glued in the funnel to the superstructure I do not know.  #74 bit.

And here are the next steps in the whatever-the-hell-they-are. (1) insert 0.015" styrene rod and then clip off and (2) lay down the thinnest stretched sprue I could make in hopefully vertical lines. Not every piece of stretched sprue is the same length - I'm just waiting for the glue to dry before using a super sharp knife to cut them along the line I drew.

I would have used 0.006" steel wire except I couldn't figure out a way to uniformly cut the wire to equivalent lengths using my Xuron wire cutter. What I needed was something like Chopper for steel wire but didn't have anything that would work on 0.006" wire. How do you guys manage to cut wire to unifrom lengths?  What kind of jig/cutter do you use?

Lastly, a bit of rigging as I knew this would be next to impossible once the superstructure was glued onto the deck. I managed to knock off one of the yardarms while doing this.  The kit didn't include any attachment points or rigging diagram (big surprise) and Hatton's book on Victorious is a little vague in this matter. So, I scratch built a small flag box with four holes to run the fishing line (thread) through after tieing small knots in the yardarm.  The picture shows the rigging before it has been tightened and glued (and for gluing, I'm following David Griffith's book suggestion to use Mucilage - a substance that can't be purchased in the US as it was discontinued sometime back in the Clinton era (?) so I ordered it from Canada (and am still waiting).

Not shown is my current endeavor - Six (6) Pom Pom directors - from Northstar Models. These are 1/350th so a bit out of scale but are pretty detailed. I've done one (1) and it took 90 minutes working with incredibly small resin and PE. Illustrious had Mk III directors but Northstar only had Mk I, Mk II and Mk IV  so I chose the Mk II.

Cropredy, you can get much better results with casting resin, it is much easier to work with and retains much better detail.  I get my supplies at TAP Plastics.

OK gang, I have spent considerable time over the last few weeks dealing with the HADT (High Angle Detector Tower) as Taranto Illustrious didn't have any radar atop these.  My solution involved my first foray into resin casting.

With a moderate amount of success here, I decided then to tackle the eight turrets. The kit parts are way too simplistic and have no surface detail so another attempt at molding and casting was made. This didn't work out so well and I decided to just add the detail eight times across all the turrets using good old styrene and PE.

Here is a teaser picture of the mold for the turret but you can read the whole story here with many more photos

Awright, where be all ye seadogs!  Double rations it's Friday!

Triple rations to the first to get a build on the ship's log.  That ought to help with decipherin' the instructions.

Cropredy, glad to see yer on duty.  Looks tedious, but with enough grog yer'll get through it.  Gussets might no be in the right place, mind you, but they'll be on there.

Stringbags ahoy!  No pe in the cockpit is there?  Weigh anchor!

Admiral,

Here is my humble entrant, the Tamiya 1/48 Swordfish Mk 1. It will be in the markings of the second flight of 818 Squadron aboard "Ark Royal" for the "Bismarck" strike. It look like, at first glance, and outstanding kit with the option to fold the wings.
I still want to get some PE for it so it will be a little while before I start. By your leave sir, I need to let this grog wear off a little prior to starting my work.

My 1/48 Hasegawa stringbag is on it's way, should have it by Wednesday although I probably won't start on it until I get some other obligation out if the way. I also still need to get a PE set for it.for it.

Lest one think I'm not working ....

Started adding the gussets.  I'm in the hull and deck paint touch up phase and decided that now would be the time for these babies. They need to be added with the hull inverted and that will be harder once the island is glued on.  The gussets I'm using are PE from Northstar Models (1/350). If I had more time and inclination, I'd have hand made these with a punch.  But as there are so many to do and they are hard to see once the ship is displayed in its eventual diorama base with the eye drawn to the carrier deck with Swordfish, I opted to spend $ over spending time.

No doubt I'll knock a few off before I'm done with this project.  I hope the airbrush touch up doesn't blow them off as they are only secured by two knife-edge surfaces.

The rubber band is to clamp the deck to a portion of the hull that seems resistant to staying glued.  Lots of Perfect Plastic Putty used to deal with deck-to-hull fit issues given that I had relocated some compartments and HADCs to be "historically accurate". If I had never read a build report of the Victorious, I don't think I would have realized how much scratch work was required.  So many problems with my adaptation of the kit beyond OOB. Sigh.

The photos make it look like more surface work is needed (true) but I also haven't cleaned up all the sanding dust either.

GMorrison

Line up the men and ration the rum.

The Admiral is asking for Viagr...something but send him saltpeter.

They tried that on us in the Army.  Didn't work.  But just for saying that you owe me a double ration and a good cigar.  Forget the wench.
