OMG.... Roll Models has FINALLY shipped my order placed on 3/24.  I was not up to the task of masking the canopy on the He 111, especially in 1/72.  Getting old and lazy... what can I say? Anyway, the point is the Eduard masks are in that order.  So when they get here, and if I really can sit at the bench after my knee operation this Friday, I may finally make some progress on my bomber.

Roll Models has FINALLY shipped my order placed on 3/24

Gosh, I hated that wait.  But there was an upside since I am building two kits for this GB, I was able to put much of the Do217 together before the masks finally arrived.  Tonight I finally got all the masking done and can now get back to work on completing these kits.

I won't be placing any more orders from Roll Models unless they are my only option.  That 3 week wait is ridiculous. The only reason I ordered from them is that Squadron did not have the Ju88 masks in stock -- although they did have the Do217 masks in stock, but I didn't want to pay for separate shipping charges.  About 2 weeks into my wait Squadron finally did show the 88 masks in stock, and I'm sitting there thinking I could have ordered from Squadron and had the masks in about 2 days ... and about that time I got the e-mail from Roll Models that the order had been fulfilled.  Ack, rant over!

Good luck with your operation.

Marc:

Bummer about the surgery. Wishing you a speedy recovery with lots of plastic, resin, PE and paint to keep your mind occupied.

Invertman: Oh, shoot! I still owe you some reference material. I'm in out of town until mid-week, but by Friday I'll have you something.

Okay, let's spring this GB back into life...I'm rounding third and heading for home with the He-111. Although this has a plethora of flaws, I wanted to get pictures taken before I called it a night. The paints are Polyscale upper RLM 79, MM Acryl lower RLM 78 with a Polyscale flat cote. Decals are Aeromaster...great decals, too. Thanks to Carsanab for twisting my arm on the desert scheme!

There are a few odds and ends to touch up, but here she goes:

You'll notice the rear gondola canopy is missing...I have a Squadron replacement on the way:

Looks like I need to rotate the right wheel!!!

Before the GB is over, I may attempt either a Ju-88C or a Ju-52, but there are a few kits I need to refresh the cells with. This kit was decent, but more time consuming than it should have been, mainly due to a heavy work load. A few single engine fighters should prime me for another challenge...

its a slow progress as i have a heavy work load and also i help coach my

son's baseball team.

Yep, awesome job Mucker!  Looks great.  Are those panel lines recessed?

I've finally started on my Ju-88c-6.  Just getting the office worked up so far.  I'm trying to find some instructions for the Pro-Modeler Ju-88C-6 to turn it into the dayfighter.  I "think" I know which parts should be there, but I'm not sure.  Other than the obvious deletion of the antennas on the nose, I'm trying to determine if there were two or one top rear guns and if there was a bottom rear gun.  I'm not sure if there would be anything else different.

Well exactl;y 4 weeks after placing the order it arrived yesterday... MINUS the back ordered masks (and no I had no idea 'til it arrived).  So I am going to bite the bullet and mask the old fashioned way

Here is a gallery posting from Hyperscale where that kit was built into the maritime patrol version.  It might be helpful.  http://hsgalleries.com/ju88c6fo_1.htm

Thanks, guys...this one dragged on a little too long and I'm happy to be "almost" done. I still want to add the rear gondola when it arrives.

TryintoModel: Yes the 1/48 Monogram kit is recessed panel lines. It's not a bad kit...just requires a little more modelling and effort than a Tamigawa-Eduard-Miniatures kit.

Invertman: I know what you mean: I've had heavy travel with work lately and i try to help out coaching my son's soccer...but when I finally get some bench time it's relaxing.

Marc: Not that you couldn't do it, but would you be better off cancelling the Roll order and getting another set of masks from Squadron, etc.? Especially in 1/72...you're a glutton for punishmentWink [;)]. On the other hand, I guess it's just a matter of time and if you've already waited a month, what's another few days to manually mask?

Nice job on the -111 Mucker.  Thumbs Up [tup]

I've finally managed some progress that I can report via a photograph.  After a planned slow-go at masking (planned in that I planned to do a single section of the canopy each night until I was done rather than try to do all of the canopies for both aircraft in a day, how tedious would that have been?), I finally completed that task yesterday and today got to do some painting.

I put down a coat of black gray to represent the interior of the canopy framing, then went ahead with the same color to make a stab at pre-shading.  The results on pre-shading are so-so I think, since my airbrush, a Badger Universal 360, does not have a fine tip and I haven't bothered to acquire one.  There seems to be a bit of spatter but I think this will end up looking fine anyway.

Hopefully I'll get to continue working on these kits this week, but with a busy work week and a birthday party this Saturday, and summer coming up .... well, I should still be able to complete both kits well before this GB ends.

Nice work aggieman... twice

Not wanting to be beaten by a kit...or wait weeks again for the masks... I opted for doing it myself.  A job made infinately easier bythe recessed lines for the frame work.

Aggieman, they look good so far, can't wait to see them finished.

Mark, looks like you survived masking the beast. Even though the He 111 has lots of glass I've  found other builds more difficult to mask.  Looks like you got the five piece canopy lined up well.  I remember having to do that over a couple of times to get it to look right. Dunce [D)]  I look forward to seeing more of your build.

Thanks for the comments, wing_nut and razordws.

I much prefered those canopy masks to doing it by hand.  When I first got back into this hobby back in '95, one of the first kits I did was the 1/48 Monogram He 111.  I almost gave it up once I got into masking that bird.  I did say "almost" however.Cool [8D]  But masking canopies remains the only part of modeling that I typically dread and nearly always hate to do.  Consequently I try ever new way I read about in the hopes that they've finally made it easy.  These Eduard masks did make it much easier and far less frustrating.

AggieMan & Marc: Both are looking great. I love the "grey plastic " camo scheme you both choseDunce [D)]. On a serious note, I look forwardto the paint stage, which doesn't seem too far off for either of you.

We've got the makings of a top notch squadron here...

I sanded the instrument landing antenna off the bottom, and the top canopy rails, that are molded to the fuselage to make fixing the seams easier.

Here is the new antenna.

That's some geat looking panel lines there. Nice idea on the sanding between antenna wires. What gauge wire/solder did you use? I'd actually say that's an improvement to the kit antenna, no?

O.K. here is the beast. This is 1/48 dragon kit. She had some problems with fit issues but all in all I liked the kit.I still have some work to do to her but I have to say not my best work but well worth it.

Hail the King!...you're not getting off that easy, Thad! That's some beautiful work there. Can you give us some insight into how you painted the 88 camo? Looks very nicely done form the pic.

...and you HAVE to have more photos than that!

Oh, and by the way, for completing the build, you've earned your Bomber's wings...check out the first page. Rumor has is that Carlos is working up some special wings for those with multiple builds...

Thanks Espins, the futher away you get the better it looks

Mucker, The camo is just a combo I made up. I think I put three different paint jobs on her before I stopped with this one. All I did was cut a pattern in a index card and shot it over a base color.

The supports are .020 plastic rod and the antenna is 28 gauge craft wire
