I built a Sopwith Camel when I was about 9 years old.  Other than that one (which got blown up by firecrackers a LONG time ago!), This will be my first one!

I had built one before, but that was really playing around with a old $5 testors kit. It was so old, it still had molded on decals ridges on the wing.

So yes, this will be my first biplane - I had 2 sitting in my stash for a few years, everytime I take it out and thought about the rigging, I put it back.

I built a Fokker Dr.1 and a Spad XIII when I was a kid (hmmm.... 30+ years ago?).  It's been so long that I could probably get away with saying this will be my first real attempt at doing a WWI aircraft.  Shock [:O]

Won't be my first, but maybe I'll try for more "Authentic" colors.  All of these have been travelling with me since 1969 or earlier.  I know I built the Dr.1 then, my roommate at the time Paul Wagner, built the Camel that matched in Roy Brown markings, but of course the Dr.1 had the Werner Voss decals.  Seems we couldn't keep our history very straight, Wagner flew the Camel, Eaton flew the Triplane?  What's up with that!

I'll just have to type faster Marc, and use more than two fingers. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Guys, I have the utmost confidence in your skills to produce some fine-looking models for this GB, especially when I consider what I've seen in the past from all of you. I'm sure many will blow my builds right out of the water! The skills and patience required you all have. Get your hands on some good reference pics and you're good to go (but I'll always be around to answer any questions you may have). Thumbs Up [tup]

Woohoo!  Got my Fokker in the mail today.  I have to admit, I'm taking it as a good omen that it was part of DML's "Knights of the Air Series."

Mike- Do you know where I might find some 1/48 Fokker DVIII decals?  The ones in the kit are not so good, and all I have been able to find is DVII markings.  I looked at Americals, Eagle Strike, Aeromaster, and Meteor but nothing yet.  TIA!

They're turning off my internet tomorrow and rehooking it up at the new place in the afternoon, hopefully it will be a seamless transition.  If I'm not around for a day or two or three, don't worry!  I'll be back soon.  See you soon!

Frank, give this website a look.  I have never ordered anything from them but I was able to find what company had what decals.  It's worth a look.  Good luck on a smooth transition to the new place buddy.

Roy-

Thanks buddy!  I'll take a look there.  Hopefully your move goes smoothly as well.

Anybody ever try masking and airbrushing lozenge?  Not sure if it would be innovative or madness... Confused [%-)]

Frank,

Thanks for the warm welcome! Make a Toast [#toast]  I must say that there certainly is a lot of traffic on this group page already.  This should be really interesting once the build actually starts.  My 1/48 Eduard kit is the Nieuport 17 version with markings from the movie "Flyboys".  Maybe by the time the build starts, I will actually sit down and watch the film.

Wing-nut,

This will not be my first WWI aircraft build.  I think that my most recent one was Eduard's 1/72 photoetched Sopwith Camel from about a year ago (if my memory is correct).  I thought at the time that I should get started on my Fokker Dr 1 from the same series (1/72 strip-down), as the two wings caused me some challenges. Banged Head [banghead]

Roy,

How did you set up the badges at your signature?  I have now run out of room to display the one for this group build, even though it does show up on my preview screen.  Any guidance will be appreciated.

It will not be my first biplane, but my second. have built the AMs F3F-3, and it was a nice build with the PE riggingwires. only thing I had to add of rigging was some wire for the antennae.

But it will be the first WWI aeroplane of mine thoughHeadphones [{(-_-)}]

Frank, I found a sheet of D.VIII markings, but they're not German and there's no lozenge included. How do the crosses and such look in your kit, because if they're passable, then all you'd need are the lozenge decals. You could use the kit decals as templates to cut the AM lozenge to size. Just an idea, because I'm having little success in finding AM sheets for this bird.

Mike-

Actually, all of the decals look pretty sad.  They appear to have been exposed to hot and cold temperatures, and are badly cracked.  Do you have any reference photos of any DVIII's that do not have the lozenge pattern?  Looking at the crosses, I think I can mask and airbrush those.  I am also considering painting it in a sort of "what if" sceme.  Maybe how it would have looked had I been a pilot back then.  Just an idea...

Thanks for looking buddy!  I may end up finding some AM lozenge decals, painting the crosses, and painting the markings too.  I'm sure I'll figure something out!

Scott, it looks like wingnut can help you.  I had to have one of the guys in the build do mine, Darren (Aussi Darren)

not my first one, but if I go for the 1:28 Spad it's my first big one. All I did so far was five (Fokker DrI and DVII, Sopwith Camel, Pfalz DIIIa, Avro504K) 1:72 kits.

A few cobwebs shook out today, and in the interests of full disclosure, I'm pretty sure I built all of the Aurora single engine biplanes in the late 50's.  They are among that long list of Those Who Have Not Survived, so you will all be spared photos...
