Scott -thanks for the info! All my 13 years in the USNR have been landlubber but still know that "if its not moving or alive, you paint it!" lol . I also imagine would be hard to work some weathering in at the larger scales, something for me to research more for sure.

raider-hall - nice pics! why dont you tag the links with the combo, that way the pics show on the thread

silentmodeller - nice job, specially for only your second carrier. I know what you mean about the dark pics, something I have struggled with... I use a desk lamp with a flexible arm and bring the light very close to the model before taking a pic. One thing I would suggest (not that Im an expert, recently returned to the hobby! LOL), is to invest in some decal setting solutions, like Micro Sol and Set (few others out there), would help you get the decals in place and avoid some of the silvering and "halo" seen in some decals. Thanks for sharing! cheers

Scotty and Jmart    thanks for ur help and found out that one of u mention abt GMM and found out that GMM has the set for the ships i have.

Raider and scrpor2  great job on the carrier!  i like the weathering you guys made  impressive  I should try someday with my ships.

okay here is the pictures   click and enjoy smiles   any feedback or comment are welcome

you might see some errors i make under the flight deck like i mention abt open gaps.  Its my second carrier i built  so im still new to ships smiles.  first one was the IJN Akaki for pearl harbor gb.here is it if you are interesting

i enjoyed building the hornet   it was one of the toughest project i ever built.  I might get other hornet in 1/350 scale  who knows.

1/350 FDR scratchbuilted      a blackwash strokes up and down the hull with little rust stains will out the hull features. The Midway class flightdeck was all steel so no wood on deck.           http://is129.photobucket.com/albums/p226/raider-hall/100_0812.jpg                                     http://is129.photobucket.com/albums/p226/raider-hall/100_0818.jpg                                     http://is129.photobucket.com/albums/p226/raider-hall/100_0833.jpg                                     hope these photos help out your FDR.

silentmodeler,

As JMart mentioned, there is limited PE out there for the odd-scale carriers.  It seems that Gold Medal Models might also have a set or two.

scorpr2,

Very nice job! Thumbs Up [tup]  Thanks for sharing your work with the group and myself.  I am looking forward to seeing the finished product.

JMart,

Weathering would depend on the vintage of the ship, and how long the ship has been in action.  The Navy takes great pains at keeping their ships in relatively good repair.  The flight decks get washed down every day at sea, so in scale, would not show too much wear and tear on non-skid.  The wooden decks were stained with a mahogany stain, and during WWII they were then painted with a blue paint.  Wear on them would show both the mahogany color and light wood color in different areas of the deck that saw more action (typically down the middle).  The island would be fairly clean, unless you are showing a battle damaged ship.  There would be some stains along the sides where different pipes drained overboard.  You could show some rusting around openings, but this would be seen more often on the older ships.  Always use a reference photo or two of the ship for the time period that you are trying to show.  Once most ships reach port, one of the first activities is to scrape off rust and paint what is needed to make the ship look good.

scorpr2 - looks good to me! are the numbers decals or hand painted? I would just touch up the 42 just a tad...

raider-hall - good question! how do you weather/dirty a carrier? pinwash to bring out some details? scuff the flight deck? Um, I dont have a clue! :)

Here's an update on the F.D.R. CV-42.  The deck is ready to be married to the hull, the island is ready to receive all of the masts, and then I'm gonna repaint my CAG and land them onboard.  Then I think I'll be finished.  Here's some pic's:

silentmodeler - Toms Modelworks and White Ensign have some generic PEs (rails etc) in 400 which may be to big and 500 which may be too small. The only specific AM i have seen at 426 is for the Revell Arizona. Sorry cant be of more help

I am currently putty-ing the gaps between the propeller shafts and the hull, to be followed by hull priming/anti-fouling red ABish.

Guys, sorry I have not been around much, I have had some problems with life. To top it all off, I had to buy a new computer, as the old one died, motherboard went on it!!!! I have started to paint the Kuzenetsov, and have mixed up some Soviet upper deck orange, I just hope it is right!! I used 2 parts Gunze orange, with 1 part cocoa brown. Looks the part!!!! As soon as I re-register with picturetrail, I will post photos, I hope!!!

I look forward to seeing photos of your work.  It sounds like the two of you are moving right along with your projects.  Please keep the group posted as you finish up the builds.

hello gangs

sorry for a long long reply since i was soooo busy at my work and didnt have time to do my carrier.  past few days i got some time so i grap it.  boy  doing the carrier has been awkward for me since im used to do aircrafts. and Banged Head [banghead]  i competely forgot to take the picture of my work processing cuz i was toooooo addict doing it.  Sign - Oops [#oops]  it was hard to doing 4 colors on the hull of the hornet (CV-8)  i did fix the mistakes i made and now its looks good  and already put the flight deck on it  but it dont fit properly  so had to put some putty on it to cover up some open gaps.  when i post the pictures  you might see it.  so basically the ships is almost done  and soon will start working on the B25s  its already sprayed to OD (olive drab)  will going to paint light blue as for windows then doing the deals on bombers and ship as well.  i try to remember to take some pictures of it LOL

everyone   nice job on ur carriers!!!

Just an update.  I have repainted my CAG.  And today I painted the yellow stripes on the flt. deck.  All I really need to do is finish all of the painting of little things, and glue the island and flt. deck to the hull, put on the few decals I have and I'll be done.  I hope to have it finished by the end of the month.

raider-hall,

I fully understand.  Thanks for sharing the photos, and please continue to keep the group informed of your progress.

All,

So, with about three months remaining, how is everyone else coming along?  I have not heard from some of you in a while.

JMart,

With a little paint, those ridges might be camouflaged enough to make them nearly disappear.  I am not positive, but I think that the Monogram kit is a reissue of the Italeri staple for modern carriers.  When I built the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower several years ago, it did not give me too many issues.  I look forward to seeing the photos.

The yellow color maybe the pictures itself, I know I get "yellow" tints if I dont have the right light and angle when I take a pic.

I did start on mine, the old Monogram Nimitz, sort of embarassing to follow up the massive scratchbuilt project with mine lol.

Pics are in the cam with my kid, but I sanded the center seam and assembled the shafts. Lots of sanding/putty filler to get a nice fit. The hull has these raised "ridges" that are waaay off scale, but I will leave them on since it would be a pain to remove/reduce them.

raider-hall,

I thought that it looked a little like paper, but I thought that I would ask.  Just out of curiousity, how long do these builds typically take you?

raider-hall,

What are you building your kits out of anyway?  I was checking out your photos and the material looks to be yellow in color, and also very thin.

Thanks for allowing us access to the many wonderful photos of your work.  I will certainly keep checking on your progress with the Enterprise.

All,

So how is everyone else coming along?  I just finished a project for a friend at work (the old MPC Carl Casper Telephone Booth car), and am ready to knock down my stockpile by another kit or two.  I am building Jack Northrop's N-1M flying wing first as I need something easy after the work needed on the car (it was given to me as two partial kits, the majority of one was poorly assembled, and it took using both kits to end up with a finished product).  Anyway, I am thinking of building the Tamiya 1/350 I-400 as a second entry for this build as I am fairly certain that I can build it before the deadline.

Please keep the group posted on any progress.

very nicely done raider-hall!

I didsome work on mine, not a big deal of a build, just tge old Monogram Nimitz, to get my feet wet, back into modelling after 20+ year hiatus. Did some center seam sanding and prep for antifouling-red painting and some other minor details. The kit isnot a big deal, not much detail and not in the same league (by far!) of the builds here but its fun :)

Ill post some pics afetr the weekend, once I get the DigCam back from the kids...c heers
