Ok, so some more bad progress shots to show ya. I was too lazy to break out my photo booth with all the X-mas stuff around and all. All the base colours are done and now to do some detail painting, gear doors, steel and wheels and fuel tanks. Hope to get some done this weekend. Better shots are comming.

Thanks for the tip Rand, I think I will try it on this one. Fingers crossed.

Well Steve,

I think I will be sticking with the Revell 1/32 Cat and dress her up as VF-41 "Black Aces" Gulf of Sidra Fitter Killer. Although they dont exactly have a Mig kill it will certainly be a welcome addition to my collection. I will post progress in the Aircraft Forums since its not a Mig Killer, so be watching there for progress info and pics.

Next project will definately be the 1/48 Revell Cat with VF-32 markings.

Nice cockpit progress Henry. it is really comming along nicely. Keep the progress comming.

Hey Ga, sorry about all the Hornet problems. Are the Hase really that bad/, just wondering as most of their kits go together well. Is it the same problem with the 1/72 as with the 1/48?.

Rand what is your next step on the build, sticking with the 1/32 or will you switch to a 1/48.

On my front the top colour is on and looking good to me. All the masks are off except for the canopy and now time for some detail paint jobs. I will post some photos tomorrow.

Hey all, here's some pics of the cockpit I took with my new camera.  I'm still working on the seats, I'll post some pics of those when they are done.

Henry

PS, Hey Rand, good to see you back. Sorry I didn't get to see ya before you left OKC.

Grumpy [|(]Just my luck!

No one makes 1/32 F-14A VF-32 decals so I have decided to go with VF-41 for my 1/32 Cat. I will build my 1/48 Cat as VF-32 later since there are decals available for it. Superscale/Microscale used to make a 1/32 sheet for VF-32 and I have looked high and low for it, seems most aftermarket decal makers no longer produce it. I can find the decals in 1/48 but not 1/32.

Bummer! I guess I'll have to live with it, oh well. Sigh [sigh]

OK, I'm chiming in here. Big Smile [:D]

The Eagle, Hornet and the Phantom Progress look fantastic. I am looking forward to seeing them finished. Steve, One little suggestion, I think you should try a graphite rub over the panel lines. This is the same technique I use to shade and weather panel lines. Use the rub over the top of the Phantom and let the bottom alone and just add proper weathering to it. I have explained the technique on some of my past posts and you will likely find it the Techniques Forum.

The progress is top notch guys!

As for myself, I have shelved the Spitfire and have pulled down my Revell 1/32 F-14A and will get started on that most likely this weekend. This bird will be for the GB here and again will represent one of the VF-32 Swordsmen Gulf of Sidra Mig Killers. I will be doing some more reseach on the planes detail to see if I need any aftermarket detail to add. I do believe I am going to need a chin pod for it. Funny thing about this kit is as old as it is, it has the recessed panel lines which makes me believe it's a repacked Tamiya or Hasegawa kit and will be all the more fun to build. I will keep you guys posted on my progress with pics.

Sign - Dots [#dots] I wonder if Eddie Miller needs a set of 1/32 VF-1 Wolfpack decals? hehehehe.

Happy Modeling!

It looks pretty darn good.  Sometimes paint has trouble adheiring to pencil marks, but it may provide a desireable effect.  Less paint adhearing in the panels would make for a dark/shadow effect for the joints.  Enough of the paint may stick to tone down and blend in the panel lines.  I think you're on the right track, but be careful not to do anything that can't be undone.  Keep playing around with it, because it looks great.

Hey Guy's, well I have some progress to show ya. I finished re-scribing the F-4 and it was a lot of fun. I learnt a lot from that process. She is primed and I painted the whole thing white as an undercoat as well as the bottom colour. For the fun of it I filled all the panells with a pencil to see how it looks and I think I will keep it for the underside and might play with it for the top. Masking the top tonight and the grey goes on tomorrow.

I dont think I posted this before but here is the aircraft I am modelling and trying to recreate. Hope to get it halfway close to the real thing.

P.S. What do you guy's think, too much on the panells or toned down a little.

Wow Guys,

Your builds are looking great, especially considering the demands of the Turkey weekend.  I didn't get a darn thing done with plastic.

Nice progress GA, I really like the third photo as it makes the front of the a/c look stretched out. Made me look twice. Thanks to the holiday I have got a lot of work done on the F-4. It is all primed and the white undersides are done. Just a little more filling and sanding on some small areas and Iwill be ready for the top colours.

the left wing has been filled and now is ready for the paint booth. also the nose  and the canopy has been added to  the a/c

Finally some progress shots, poor shot but progress. I began fixing the panel lines that were damaged in sanding and next thing I know I am re-scribing the whole thing. That was a lot of fun and had to re-sand afterwards to fix my mistakes. I have already painted the blast panels and to move things along I put on the landing gear and doors on as they are all going to be white anyway. Should speed up things a little. The canopy fit is terrible and I sanded as best I could to make it flush. Primer goes on tomorrow.

The next photos will be better,

Steve

Sorry to hear of your troubles GA. I know how you feel, I have a dog (dashund) that used to love the taste of plastic. She destroyed my whole collection of 54mm Airfix figures some years ago. I built them as a kid and was restoring them when she got them. Good luck with the Hornet and looking forward to seeing it.

Rob,

That is horrible.  Make sure the Pug doesn't get his Milk-bone after he uses the lawn.  That'll teach 'em.  Sorry to hear about the Eagle.  We were looking forward to see it.  However, Hornets make for great models.  We have something new to look forward to.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Chris

well guys the builds are looking great but i have a small report on my f-15 eagle. it has meet an early untimely death thru the small jaws of a plastic hungry pug. this is not the frist time my neices pug has helped herself to one of my models.  in fact she has gotten a hold of 3 f-18s and now my eagle. i must remember to push the chair under the old work bench. so with the eagle out i have started on a 1/72 hornet with vfa 81 markings the two hornets that shot the migs down in ods way back in 1991. i am about 50% done with it and have i taken pics along the way. it should be in the paint booth by tuesday as i have a very short work week this week. the only problem i am having right now is i cant locate the darn decals but i know i do have them on hand its just finding them , if i get thru with this i still may build an eagle i have one in 1/72 out in the shop with the gulf sprit markings, so only time will tell if i can do it. by the way yall have a happy thanks givingday and be safe out their if u are traveling, take care rob

Welcome back Rand, good to see ya again and hope all is well. Chris did a great job while you were away,  thanks Chris.  Got a lot of work done on the F-4 today, canopy masked and installed and the rear metal panelling painted and currently drying. Tomorrow I hope to get the base coat applied.

It's good to have you back Rand.  Now that you're living in Cleveland Go Browns

Yeah, I didn't think that Migs were acceptible for this thread.  Thankfully, I don't think anyone here was going to build one.  It's kind of a cool curiosity though.

I'm handing you the keys, it's good to have you back.

Hey!!!!

Just wanted to drop a note and let you all know I am OK. Made it to Ohio in one piece and have settled in pretty well. Found the hobby shop here and was quite impressed with the place. I hope to be back to modeling soon.

I have started my Revell 1/48 Spitfire to give me something to work on. I dont really have a permanent spot to work on models yet, just a little table so I figured the Spitfire since its rather small could be worked on there. I really wanted to pull down the 1/32 F-14A and badly start working on it but found one seat did not have the head rest molded so I will have to make one from scratch later. Maybe I'll just go with resin seats instead.

I also want to congradulate again everyone that has finished their Mig Killer. I also again want to welcome the new participants. Awesome Models guys! A few other things also...

Mig on Mig kills are not acceptable. This means (models of) Migs that shot down Migs are not going to be allowed. The reason being is that this GB was ment to showcase American and Allied Mig Killers. WWII warplanes do not count! It MUST be a modern combat jet warplane. Any questions please email me.

Last I want to thank Chris again for taking over hosting while I away. I think he did a super awesome job! Give him a pat on the back guys!!!

Anyway..... I Have Returned

It's a Fitter, no??

I like to model odd, but this would take the cake.

Ken, Wow, that is some great info.  I'm going to have to look some of that stuff up just to see what Ethiopian, Eratrean, and Somali aircraft look like.  Migs shooting Migs is like Corsairs shooting Corsairs in the Football War between El Salvador and Hondoras

I use to take care of my old Marine Corps helicopters in Djibouti (on the Horn of Africa, borders Ethiopia and Eratrea).  The entire Djiboutian Airforce was parked next door.  It consisted of 3 Cessnas, about 5 Hips and 3 Hinds.  They also had about a dozen other aircraft of various types (some Russian, some European, and some American) stripped clean and sitting in the sand next to the Taxi Way.  East Africa is a wild place.

btp, actually 2 Skyraiders shared the credit for one Mig-17 in 1965, and a Skyraider downed another one a year later.  I forget the details, but it was on Dogfights episode "Gun Kills Over Vietnam."  CJ95 posted some info about it on the 2nd page of this GB thread.  How's that Mig-Shooting-Scooter fitting together?

I got intrigued (obsessed?) and looked at more of those database entries. Migs have been used in so many places that there have been many opportunities for them to get shot down:

Ethiopian F-5A vs Somalian Mig-21MF 1977

Somalian Mig-21MF vs Ethiopian MiG-21PFM 1978

ERAF/Eritrea MiG-29A vs MiG-23BN FBS/EtAF 1999

EtAF/Ethiopia Su-27S vs MiG-29A ERAF 1999

EtAF/Ethiopia Su-27S vs MiG-29 ERAF 1999

ERAF/Eritrea MiG-29A vs MiG-21MF/bis  FBS/EtAF 1999

Indian MiG-21FL vs MiG-21FL PAF 1971

PAK F-6 vs MiG-23M V-VS 1986

PAK Mirage IIIEP vs MiG-21 DRAAF 1986

Taiwan P-47D vs MiG-15bis PLAAF 1954

Taiwan F-84G vs MiG-15 PLAAF 1955

Taiwan F-86F vs MiG-17 PLAAF 1958

Taiwan F-104G vs J-6 (Chinese Mig 19) PLAAF 1967

Some very interesting Mig Killers if you can get the decals!

BTW, I can't vouch for the validity of the ACIG data and it's very possible my eyes have misread some entries; if so, sorry about that!

Chris, you got me wondering what other subjects were out there. Here are some other Mig killers:

In WWII the Germans shot down a number of Mig-3's; No specifics tho

According to the Korean War Data Base, http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/article_307.shtml, these guys all shot down Migs:

F-80 Shooting Star

F-51 Mustang

F9F Panther

F3D-2 Skyknight

F4U-4B Corsair

F-7F-3 TigerCat

Not to mention gunners in B-29's and RB-29's.

In the UN entry of the same data base the RAAF and RN used used these:

Meteor F.8

Hawker FB.11 Sea Fury

Just as an aside there is mention of an Afghan Mig-21 shooting down a DGMAF Mig-21. I don't know what DGMAF is. Who knows what else is out there if you scratch enuf.

Steve and Henry,

We're looking forward to seeing your builds.  I know there are others out there working feverishly on their Mig-Killers, we're looking forward to seeing those too.

I was looking at the lists, and I'm a little surprised that a Night Fighting Corsair never shot down a Mig in Korea.  I picked up a great Monogram Pro-Modeller kit at Cincy-Scale.

Chris
