ModelMan, maybe someone has a set they could loan you. This GB is supposed to keep costs to a minimum. I read a review that said it was the nose art that lacked detail, do you have any other 1/72 kits that have nose art? If not, then we'll see what we can do.

5 is in the lead with 2 one behind and 4 and 3 tied for last.

I think I'm going to settle with the Monogram kit because of all the variants buildable.

I checked my container that I keep all my extra decals in and I could not find anything.Sigh [sigh]

I guess i can just wait until we start and then if I encounter a problem then we can go from there.

I guess everyone is committed to other builds or not crazy enough to build the Trumpeter 1/32 with me? No problem I will stick with my first choice of the Promodeler kit. Hey David have you taken a new head count. Seems the ranks are growing very rapidly. I am pleasanlty surprised with the results. Great idea to start a group build there David! Who knew the turn out would be so good. I am rolling along with my F 5. Just laided down the main color over the masked underside invasion stripes. I mixed it up by eye. I will not know if I am happy with it until I lay down some unthinned dullcoat to give it the faded effect with touch up for overpainted invasion stripes on the upper surfaces. I will post pics when I get a little furthur along.

Sounds like a plan David. I am hoping someone else is a crazy as me.  Otherwise I may never build the beast. A good kick in the rear and some insperation from a fellow modeler may be what I need to get inspired to tackle this monster.  am already inspired by the people joining everyday. Well gotta go my meds are kickin' in screens gettin a little blurry se ya'll tomorrow.

Check out a thread called Let There Be Lightning WIP in the AC. There are a few gripes with the kit, but nothing that can't be dealt with.

Hey hey! A bike guy. Sad to say i'm about 99.75% roadie...with the occasional spin on my now-neglected mountain bike. Of course, I'm a Les Paul guy as well (figures, right? Big Smile [:D]). My axe-wielding sort of falls by the wayside this time of year once the bike rolls out.

I checked out the Lightning post...it looks like this kit is doable. Will definitely require a bit of filler (heh) but hey, it's OOB, it's not destined for a museum any time soon. I need some basic skills work anyway. Let's see if I can pull it off!

Just like everyone else, I have a bunch of builds committed to this summer including 2 for the big Kursk build, so I'm not sure when I'd get going...do we have an official start date for this one yet?

Thanks for your input fellas!

Modelman8, that sounds good to me. Question, has there ever been a 8th AF GB before, it seems that it being one of the largest AFs that there would have been a GB on by now. Just thinkingWink [;)]

Oh, I am so all over this one.  I have the old Monogram P-38j in 1:48 Evil [}:)].  About the AM stuff, does that apply to the decals, as I specifically bought some decals to do "Jandina III" flown by Captain J.T Robbins (22 kills).

The time line is just perfect! next August is a good end with the VJ day match.

My choice for badge would be #5 (Dave I totally agree with you, everybody knows about that mission)

Glad to see some familiar faces.  Dupes, I too am a bike guy, a wanna be roadie but in truth a commuter, 32 kilometres most days.

Hey David, I don't think there has been an 8th airforce Gb done before.  The only one similar was the Heavy Bomber GB which is supposedly still ongoing but has not seen much activity.  How about a RAF Bomber Command GB?  Or combine both into an Allied (European Theatre?) Bomber GB?

I'm not thinking of starting one right now but I like the European Bomber Command GB. I sorta like my GBs to continue on in the same formaat but different theatre. For exxample, after my Liberation of Wester Europe GB is done, then I'm going to start a Liberation of Nort Africa GB then a Lib. of Southern Europe and finally Lib. of Der Ost Front.

Hey hey! Another one! We really should get some sort of cyclist GB going sometime...hehe.

Those 32k per day are exactly 32k per day more than most people ride. Be proud of those miles...err...kilometers. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] I would cycle-commute myself but I live too close to work - can see the roof of the office out my bathroom window.

Hey, what makes you a "wanna-be" roadie?

I'm echoing jboutin's query about decals...I'm sure most of you guys that do the aircraft forum all the time have seen the kit ones done to death...shoot for some variety, maybe? Either way I'm good.

I call myself "wanna be" as I love to ride but do not have a road bikeSad [:(].  I have a hardtail MTB with slicks and paniers/saddlebag rack for my commute.

I used to ride everyday before my son was born, now there is just too much going on for me to ride everyday.  1.5 hours+ out of each day is a lot, especially when I have my family and these little plastic things we discuss here crying for my attention.

From someone who is going the other way, welcome to the wingy thingy side! (Planes are my main thing and have only built one tank before and now I am doing a Pz III in the Kursk GB).Smile [:)]

I do not have a problem myself with aftermarket decals been used. You are the second person to ask. Since David started the GB mabye you should post the question directly to him and see what he says. As for the group badge that is exactly why I posted it as one of the choices. It is what made the P-38 one of the greatest fighters ever. No other plane in anyones inventory could have flown that mission!

I guess that if you only use the decals it would be fine because it isn't that expensice and its a 1/72 kit, so Okay. But only for the people with that kit.

Okay Soulcrusher, I have Hobbycraft's re-box of the 1/32 Trumpeter kit. So I'll lose my sanity with you. I do have other commitments that I'm finishing so I may be alittle slow on the build. This will also be my first NMF so I will be requiring some tips and techniques, if that's okay. And I like picture #5. An open ended date may not be a bad idea.Cowboy [C):-)]

It seems as if my Hasegawa 'Virginia Marie' may be unbuildable.  My daughter apparently got into a couple of opened boxes and tried to build a model some time ago (I guess that there is hope of getting her interested in models!).  Now I have the opportunity of buying another kit!  I hope that I can salvage Virginia, but I am leaning toward 1/72 Academy if I can't

David, so are you going to let me do the "Jandina III" decals for my Monogram 1:48 P-38J?  With the head aches this kits has, I think I should be allowed to use the AM decals (not to be too forward or anything Wink [;)]).

Also technically, the decals are only the Jandina III nose art and serial numbers, I still have to use the kit national insigina etc.  But you are the host and you set the rules and I will abide by whatever you decide.  Let me know.Smile [:)]

I guess, since that is only the serial numbers and nose art. But can you try the kit decals first and then if they don't work get the AM ones?

I found a replacement for 'Virginia Marie'.  I'll jump in with Academy 1/48 'Glacier Girl'.

I am looking foreward to hearing from you guys building the HC Lightning.  I have wondered if it is worth it.  I have bad memories from RoG and I am reluctant to try it.
