I am in the midst of doing the M option of that kit and I seem to have gotten a pretty good one.  So far, I have only had to use a small bit of filler on the left boom.  I haven't attatched the booms yet but preliminary test fitting indicates really good fit for this kit.

I have my hands on my Glacier Girl and I am looking foreward to getting into this one.  I am dreading the decals somewhat but option 2 with the blue U.S. ARMY looks pretty neat.

I thought that I would pass this site on to anyone who hasn't seen it.  If you are a lightning fan you will find some interesting info even if you don't really get many new pics.

I will be leaving for AT this weekend.  Hopefully I will be able to check in over the two weeks even if I don't get anything done.

Fun ain't exactly the word for it. It will be two weeks of sand at Ft. Stuart.  We won't even be doing any flying the first week.  That means that I will be doing more fixin' than flyin' the second week.

Hey David I am doing the Trumpeter 1/32 and NucMedTech is doing the Hobbycraft 1/32 model. Just a small oversight if you want to correct it. I  noticed you have not decided on your choice yet.  Still deciding over all of the choices?

Good choice David seeing as that is the kit that started the whole idea in the first place. I pulled out my Trumpeter 1/32 and started eyeballing all of those parts and wonder what have I got my self into! At least I will not be alone in building this monster thanks to NucMedTech. I can't wait until Friday!

Preston and WW2modeler, looks like there's going to be a bunch of us doing the R/M P-38J, with lots doing it, I'm sure all the issues will be well discussed so we can all easliy complete it with minimum of fuss.Wink [;)]

I for one am looking forward to seeing all the completed builds and each of us deal with the same issues and see what each one of us finds as issues.

I am currently building this kit for the R/M build.  Even though it is already started, maybe I can include it as an unofficial entry.  Glacier Girl will not get so much attention until it is done any way.

I am building mine as an M.  I have the piggyback pit in and I am working on the booms now, gear up Banged Head [banghead] to hang in my son's room.  So far, this one is one of the better fitting R/M P-38 kits that I have built.  I have used a small amount of putty, but mostly due to my mistakes.  It is already clear that some work is to be expected when the big pieces come together but that is no surprise.  That being said, I have built the same kit and had bigger problems in the same area.

And I decided to add to the challenge and modify the kit to the F-5.....  Actually, the biggest challenge to the kit is the body halves seams, the booms and the wing root, the wing halves getting a clean seal, the clear parts not fighting you.... basically the whole thing is a challenge.  I building the Hasegawa P-38 for the South Pacific GB, and that one came together wonderfully (built in a day, but now for the paintin).

I am almost done with my Revell 1/48 F 5. I did not try to fix every seam or ill fitting part. Just tryed to make it look respectable. I definelty be interesting to see those of you that have decided to do it for the group build just how much you can get out of such a basic kit. Me myself I went of the deep edge and decided to do the Trumpeter 1/32! Well here is a couple of pics. Not quite done yet. Hope to finish it before the end of the week and the start of the group build.

Nice work! Thumbs Up [tup] You have given me a 'bar' to reach.  What color did you use for the overall color?  I am thinking of using the Hazy Grey by Polli Scale.  From what I have learned, the color for the F-5 was one that was never exact from plane to plane due to wartime un-exact paint color mixing, not just in the field, but at the factory as well.

Did you build OOB, or did you add anything?

Yeah, went off the deep end and took me with him! Thant's okay though, I've been wanting to build this beauty for a while. Just needed the courage. (or insanity?) Looking forward to starting has an end date been decided?

Soulcrusher, the F-5 is looking great.  From what I can see the D-day stripes look really good.

Nope she is just OOB. I knew from previous builds she would take massive amounts of sanding and scribing to build a great model so I did not go crazy filling seams. I filled in alot of them with Kristal Kleer because it is easy to wipe off and not lose the detail around it. I custom mixed the color myself. About 60% percent Tamiya X 14, 10% Tamiya XF 18 Meduim Blue and about 30% XF 2 Tamiya White. I whish it had turned out a little lighter when it was all done but I still like it. The cool thing about doing the F4 or F5 is the all of the different colors used. Here is a great web sight a forum member turned me onto that explains it all. The possibilities are almost endless as to what color some of these photo recon planes ended up with. I was trying to get more of a contrast from the fresh painted out stripes but you can still see it somewhat.

Thank you for the kind words there Modelman8. It is not easy to mask stripes on both of those booms! NucMedTech it ain't worth going over the edge unless you can drag someone with you! We must compare notes on this build seeing we are the only ones going up to 1/32. What decals does the Hobbycraft kit come with? The Trumpeter comes with two choices printed by Eagle Edititions! Itsy Bitsy II and Maj Donald Campbell's plane with a moose skull on the nose. I think I am going to do Itsy Bitsy II. I would post a pic of the art but some of it involves a single finger sticking up out of a fist and I do'nt think FSM would appeciate me posting them here.

Soulcrusher-
I can see what you mean about the stripes but better luck next time.  It still looks like a winner.  With your build and the FSM article in the back of my mind, I may just have to go out and do one my self.  My kit of choice?  Of course I will most likely fall back on R/M.  I know that it has issues but I enjoy this kit for some reason.  The one that I am working on now is probably the 10th one that I have done since I was 10 or so.  I guess it's a nostalgia thing.

I can't wait to see those 1/32 jobs though.  I figure that I will see what you go through before I get one.  As long as it is better than RoG, I will probably get one though.

I want to add the turbocharger stains on the booms of the F5 but I am not sure what color would look best to reproduce the stains from the hot exaust. Anybody got a good suggestions as to the color?

The P-38 comes with 4 choices, including a honduras plane. Here's a pic from the back of the box.

I found a pic of a P-38 painted in a sort of haze-blue camo, and it looked like the paint was burnt right off behind the exhaust, leaving a sort of charred look & bare metal.

I guess we will not be modeling the same plane then seeing that the two kits have different decal options. I guess you have not made up your mind yet.

Soulcrusher, your lightning is looking good!, I will second rudratt's suggestion of a charred look.  I have a pic that shows a white-grey charred look with a bit of dark colours (brown-gray?) fading away down the boom.

Soulcrusher-
In every color reference that I have seen, the stains aft of the superchargers appears sort of gray brown.  The condition of the paint varies, but the F4/5 seemes to hold on to the paint in that area.
