I think I will mix up some light grey with a little brown in it and test spray it to see if I can get the desired effect. I will post some pics when done. Thanks for the help all.

Here she is. Kind of a warm up for the group build. It was my first attempt at F 5 recon lightning. Weathering this color is alot harder than your typical greens and greys. There are alot of things I am not satisfied with on this build but was kind of doing it as an experiment. It will  never win any prizes but I still thing it looks pretty cool. The blue definetly stands out in a case full of green and grey camo aircraft.

Lookin' good there, Soul! I'm messing around with some colors tonight but I have to make mine look believable on an aluminum (aluminium) finish. I'm starting with gunmetal and slowly adding black and red. I hope to have new pics up on the Let There Be Lightning thread this weekend.

Soulcrusher,

I'm leaning towards the 82nd FG in Italy. I've been looking over the kit instructions and noticed that the nice engine will be closed in the nacelle. Do you have any plans for opening the nacelle to display the engine? I think I'd like to try it.Cowboy [C):-)]

Man it's hard not to with all of that beautifull detail on those engines. It would be a shame to let it all stay hidden under the cowl. Thinning out the panels and separating the panels is a ton of work. I am still undecided but I really would like to do at least one side I just do not want to screw up an expensive kit though. As of right now I would say yes I am giong to try to open up one side. Have we set a start date for the build yet?

I understand what you mean, I'd hate to mess up such a nice kit. But they almost bait you with such a nice engine and detail. I think the start date is 14 July (my 18th wedding anniversaryParty [party]), but I haven't heard of the end date.Cowboy [C):-)]

Thanks for the kind review guys. I am really looking forward to starting the 1/32. Though I am sure the fit of the Trumpeter kit is far superior to the old Revellogram the sheer number of pieces 362 in all makes you wonder if you will ever be able to finish it! Plus I definelty have to figure out a way to display those beautifull engines provided in the kit with out hacking up the engine panels to bad. I do have one good shot of a P-38 being restored and it shows the engine with all of the cover removed.

Very nice Soulcrusher, that is what I pictured!

Heading to Ft Stewart tomorrow.  I won't be living in a tent, so I am going to take my R/M P-38 with me and get something done with it while I am there.  I may even take Glacier Girl and try to get a little painting done in the pit.  I will post some pictures when I get back.  See ya in 12 days or so guys!

Currently on a weather hold.  No tent, hard barracks.  I got into aviation so I could avoid the Army camping trips.  I like mattresses and air conditioning.

What I have done is this;

1 - Go to Ask.com and type in GIF animator software.

2 - There are several free or 'demo' softwares out there for download.  I tried out two or three before I found the one that I like.

3 - Save all of the Badges that you want to make into a slideshow in one folder on your computer.

4 - Play around with the software and the badges.  When you get a GIF file that you like, save that file not only to your hard drive, but also post it up on Photobucket (or like service).  Copy the [IMG] program line for your slideshow.

5 - In the "Update Profile" section of this fine website, under signature box, paste the [IMG] line from Photobucket.  Then save changes.  Depending upon FineScale's server, you should be able to see your GB slideshow in just a few moments.

Ok has anybody started there kit yet. I decided to get a good jump start on this huge kit last night. It took me about and hour and a half just to remove and clean up all of the pieces needed to start assembling the two engines provided it the kit. The detail is amazing. Managed to get about 75% of both of the engines assembled. Going to try to finish them up tonight.

Hey there aircraft guys, just unpacked my Revell P-38...holy flash, batman! And the size of those sprue attachment points! Yowza! Looks like I have my work cut out for me...heh. Time to break out the putty.

My question to you - is there a "standard" shade for Interior Green? I have easy access to only Tamiya and Model Master paints so a number from those ranges would be most desirable.

Thanks fellas!

Hey guys.  I just finished building the 1/48 Revell P-38J so I though I'd share it with you.

This kit is from the 1964 moldings (look at the underside of the tailplane, you'll see it stamped there) Shock [:O]  There are some major fit issues with the kit, but if you're patient and have seam filling skills you'll be good to go.  There is no way on God's green earth though that you can get all the canopy parts to fit properly, they're just not shaped correctly for that to happen.  Laugh [(-D] It was worth it to take a lot of time on the seams (you're going to have some major seams to fill and sand).  I got lazy towards the end and just didn't feel like dealing with the gaps around the gun cowling and nose.

Here are two shots to give you an idea regarding the wing/boom seams you'll be faced with.  I used Squadron green putty for the big gaps.  For the smaller stuff I used a little bit of Mr. Surfacer.  And lots and lots of very careful sanding as you're dealing with gaps in areas that have complex curves.

I chose to build mine as the one flown by Major Richard Bong.  I built this kit as part of the Secret Santa GB hosted by jwb (Jon) which was a lot of fun!  Big Smile [:D]

Nice build Espins1! Those gaps must be common on Revel/monogram kits as I had the same thing on the P-61. I used Squadron's white putty to fill mine. Is there a big difference between the two or is it just a preference thing?

As for my P-38, I will start in two weeks (have to finish some other projects first, I feel like I'll need the space on the workbench). Soulcrusher, I'm looking forward to the pics on your engines.Cowboy [C):-)]

Hey dupes

The correct Model Masters acryl number is #4852 Green Zinc Chromate. All unpainted areas of most P-38's are this color. This is not actually a paint but a primer used at the factory to prevent corrosion of metal. It is usally found in the cockpit wheel wells inside of inspection panels. Later on in the war as they realized most of these aircraft would not survive long enough to corrode they stopped primering as many areas of the plane and left them b are metal.
