I was able to save the windscreen and have started the decal process. I will complete this buildAngel [angel] just not in time. Went to the Gary air show this weekend WOW.

Pics will be on the way soon, I hope.

Me thinks Tony is angling for the infamous turtle award again this year. Wink [;)]

Air show in Gary?  I don't remember any airshow in Gary when I lived there?   Is that something realtively new (like in the last 2o years - hey, I'm old and I know it)  I do remember going to an airshow in downtown Chicago along the water front with the Blue Angels.  Now THAT was TOTALLY AWESOME!!! Cool [8D]

IL2, I'm beginning to think it would have been ust as easy for you to have built this thing from scratch.  Awesome work, keep the pics coming.

I'm almost done my E555.  The last major hurtle is to paint the tires.  ALL 10 OF THEM!!! Feels like doing road wheels on armour. Yuck [yuck]  Hope to have some pics to post soon.

Yeah, it's been a real battle.  You all may recall me saying that if there was one kit in my stash that would be harder to build than last year's Mig-31, this B-58 would be it.  It has not disappointed!

This build has been an awesome experience, though.  I've learned so many new techniques!  It's something that every modeller should do at some point: take a jacked-up kit and make it into a decent model.  It requires a lot of thought and planning.

If you want to see an awesome example of just this sort of work, check out this link and see how a beautiful Yak-28 was built by the great "Bondo Phil" Brandt.  This is modelling in its truest form.
http://hsfeatures.com/features04/yak28ppb_1.htm

About that turtle award: I think it would be so ironic if last year's turtle (Tony) beats my B-58 (with "Rapid Rabbit" nose art ) accross the finish line.  Especially since I took a break in the middle of my build, just like the rabbit in the famous story "The Turtle and the Hare".

Dave, Gary has had an air show for the past nine years. This year they brought in the ThunderBirds and the Stealth bomber (Spirit) Also the Lima Lima team and an F15-e F15-A, F-16, and a P51D Mustang, always a great show.

I have started the decals and so far, so good no broken ones yet.

I will finish.

I've metallized the engine nacelles!  Generally I hate painting large components before they are bonded, but the geometry of these nacelles didn't leave me much choice.  I hope that I can mend the seams at the wings well enough after I bonded them on.

Incidentally, if your wondering, the two metallic colors are aluminum plate and stainless steel (both from rattle cans).  I must say, they look quite nice together, better than I expected.

I think they look pretty nice to IL2.  What brand of paint are you using?

Good luck with those seams Blindfold [X-)]

Ahh... my build is finally starting to resemble an airplane.  I'm working out the last few seams still, and I need to touch up paint in a few areas that got accidentally scuffed.  All-in-all though, progress is pretty steady.  I'm getting close now to applying the master primer layer over the airframe.

Modelmaster spray cans.  Laquer metallizers.
Incidentally, I discovered today that CA fumes have an adverse effect on these paints.  It softens them up temporarily, then they seem to reharden.

Nicely done, IL.  Can you imagine the size of this model if it was 1/48 scale?  Yikes!

Very cool Il2! That is one sharp looking aircraft.  Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]  Does anyone do one of those in 1/72?  looking forward to seeing more of your progress. Propeller [8-]

I was hoping to put the final touches on the E555 this weekend but I threw my back out trying to play baseball today.  First time I've ever done that so I hope it doesn't slow me down for too long.

Great work there IL2. Looks like the hardest part is done so get her done. Cant wait to see it finished. I have the Monogram 1/48 in my stash and hope to build it some day. I will take note of your colours you have done so far.

Almost finished with the "Doll" Main decals are down with the help of a lot of decal setting solution. Need to lay down the stencils, add a couple of small parts, antennas and whatnot, put her on the stand and schedule her for a photo shoot.

asap

Yeah, my B58 is a pretty good-sized model: it's about 11" long.  That's at 1/128 scale.  That 1/48 kit must be a monster: I calculate an overall length of about 30 inches!  But from everything I read, that Monogram kit is the best B-58 available.

Sidure, when you get around to building your B-58, I would recommend looking at this build.  It is leaps and bounds better than mine, much more accurate too.

TGreg, I bet that BBDoll scheme has some difficult decal work!  Lots of details.

Yesterday, was the first day of my holidays and I put it to good use.  Finally finished the E555 for this GB.  It was a nice day out this morning so I took it outside for some pics.  Shadows are a bit strong but here it is.

It was a pleasure as always to be part of this group build (thanks Kenny) and I look forward to seeing the rest of the builds yet to be completed.  That includes your big gun Kenny Wink [;)]

Awesome work Razor!  Han Solo would be proud.  It is certainly a very unique model that will create lots of conversation with anyone you show it to.  Looking at the bomb-bay, they must have expected that E555 to haul some serious lead

Il2, Arki, glad you guys liked it.

Il2,  I'm sure that the payload would have been much reduced if it was expected to fly to New York and back.  This was one of their America bomber projects.  Maybe they were hoping to have the A-bomb by the time this aircraft was operational.

Dave - that is one seriously weird looking aircraft! Absolutely love what you did with the pink camo scheme though!!! Very sharp over all. Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

What payload do you have in there now? Trying to get a sense of scale on that ordinance...looks pretty freakin' big to me! Shock [:O]

Thanks Dupes.  The history on the instruction sheets says it was to have had a payload of up to 4,000 Kg.  The two big bombs look slightly larger than the 1,000Kg bombs that came with my He 111 and I'm guessing the smaller bombs are prbably in the 500Kg range.

Bear, Andrew, thanks for your comments guys.  Always appreciated.

I guess that leaves Tony and Il2 still in the hunt for the turtle award.  Haven't heard from Kenny so I take it he is still looking for a place to call home.  Come on guys.  We need some pics.  Wink [;)]

I'll be out of town for a few days.  I'll try to drop in if I get a chance.

Tony, you finished!  Great job on such a big model. Thumbs Up [tup]  The engine detail looks good, the brake line extra is nice, the gun bay detail is great, the paint finish is nicely executed.  I can't see anything amiss...except for one thing. Evil [}:)]  The right aileron is down, which means the left aileron should be up.  Other than that, well done!

Thanks for pointing that out, I thought they would both be down since it was on the ground. The issue has been rectified since they are movable.

Nope, ailerons move opposite each other to provide lifting forces on one wing during banking/turning.

That holds true for most aircraft with mechanical connections.  I suppose if newer aircraft have hydraulic actuators it could be possible for both ailerons to be drooped on the ground as the pressure bleeds off.

Anyhoo, nice job once again.  Thumbs Up [tup]
