Attaboy, Bill!
the 'weak track' should allow you to keep it in sight.
perhaps they are throwing tools off to lighten it.
probably washed the mud off for the same reason.
Jon,
you are playing w/ fire there.
unless you have a 1:1 AFV to hole up in, you had better watch your step!

Latest Flash....
The reports have proved true. We now have photographic evidence of this strange beast. Here are photos taken within the last hour. Apparently the reports of a broken track were either wrong, or repairs have recently been carried out.
Here you can clearly see the left, front side of what now appears to be a WWII Panther A, Late. It has a strange looking paint scheme to it and has sent history buffs scrambling for their references all over.
And another image from the left rear. All in all, most experts think this is way too clean and must, therefore, be some sort of publicity stunt for an upcoming movie. They also think the "spots" are really an attempt to represent a German camoflage pattern known as the "ambush" pattern, but feel the spots may be too dense of a pattern. Any and all comments/opinions from our readers are, of course, welcome.
Well, what do you think, guys. Are the "leaves" okay, or should I strip them off and try again. I'm really up in the air over this one! I used a very light grey paint for the "white" spots. I think it's way too stark, but am sure when I dust it, it will tone down a bit.

Hey, Jon. Yeah, you're right. It must have been. After all, no one's seen this thing boppin' around the streets during the daylight. At least as far as I know. You want to see a flash, though, you should see the pic I decided to not load up. Wow! Now there was some reflection!!

Looking good Bill, guess you will post final pics before I do. My camera is ready to be picked up but is 1000 km's away. I'm helping look after my wife's Grandfather (he had a stroke) until his daughter (wife's mother) arrives - probably Thursday, so won't be home til Friday.
Jon, if I recall you already have a son, so you should know to tread very lightly around women bearing children. Mood swings can often be accompanied by arm swings. I suggest you put the kits away for a while.

Right, Ed. And latest rumor has it that a spotted Panther HAS been spotted in the vacinity of Layton Utah! It's described as still looking factory clean, with a few missing tools and sporting 3 large, red numbers on one side of the turret! One report mentioned that it was seen with the track on one side broken for a short time. This has not been confirmed, but is a strong possibility as some of these large cats are known to have very weak track links.
More later as new information becomes available with pictures to follow!

Bill:

Hi everyone.
I have a bit of a Panther question and thought this might be the best place to ask it.
I am building a Dragon Night Fighting Panther G, and although it is a really good kit, I have a bit of a flattened barrel in mine. Any suggestions for a replacement? My main supplier carries Jordi Rubio, and they list a Panther G barrel, but it says it is for the Tamiya kit. Does this really matter? The only Dragon ones are the A/D models.
Any thoughts?
Matt

Well ive finished the tracks,84 links a sideand ive found out ive got two left side tracks in the box and no right
now im about to start the Zim
Is it better to add the tool holders first then add the Zimm or add the Zimm then add the tool holders (its DIY zimmerit)
I need to finish some kits before our babys born in August

Capt,
Keep chuggin pal... Keep us posted...
Good to see the Panther thread is alive and well...
Proosh... I built the night fighter as well but I used a tamiya turret. Anyway the mounts are a little different. I used the eduard barrel and was very happy. If I remember it will fit either mantlet with a little work. The barrel opening are slightly different sizes so you might have to do some shimming and filling. Once again that has been months ago so I can't remember the details...

I may raise the thread from the dead myself after the Towed Gun build is over and I return to my Panther, which is just sitting around waiting to be weathered....

Capt,
if you zim first, you'd better make sure you figure out how to mount the tool stuff after!
where are our Zim wizards?
my Panther had PE Zim, so i really can't answer.
i am leaning toward tool racks first.

Jon, you can do the zimm either way. If you put the clamps on first, you can wipe, scrape, chip off (dependant on how hard the putty is) any excess from the tool clamps. You might bend or dislodge some doing it this way, so you'll have to be very careful. But they should be fixable.
Another possibility is to stick the clamps into the putty while it's still wet. I think I tried this on one clamp on my tiger and it worked okay. I have images in my mind of the parts popping off, though.
A third way is to mask where the parts go. I did this for the tool racks on my Panther and it worked well. Problems are that you can easily scrape off the masking tape when you're texturing the putty. You want to remove the tape as soon as you can after the zimm is textured. Also, real small masks pull up or off very easily. I haven't been able to make these work yet. I tried adding "chiped off" areas to the zimm by putting down irregular shaped pieces of masking tape before the putty, but the pulled up when I textured, too. I am going to try that again on my next one, though.
Good luck with it. Let us see how it goes.
Bill

I will post this article on zimm again , using this technique you could just do small cutouts where your clamps can go , the putty is applied thin enought to see right thru it ! http://firestorm1.topcities.com/how/zimmerit.htm

Keep going guys the end is in sight. If I can do the running gear of the Achilles 3 times, you can finish the Panthers.
I'm hanging out to see your finished builds. Don't make me come over there and stand over you with a big stick.

In the book "Panzer Modelling Masterclass" Tony Greeland states that he applies the zin the pushes small detail items into the wet putty.
Keep pluggin' guys - I want to see these beasts!

Here's a shot of the rear of the Panther with the Moskit exhaust pipes installed. I felt they wre too high and pulled them back off, reamed out the bottoms, and glued them back in. Also missing are the tops of the exhaust clamps and the jack.

crocket, If the PE is Eduard, or Aber, you can check out the instructions online, and figure out what you need to wait on, and start the rest. Good luck with the panther and keep us updated with plenty of pics!!!

Err Crockett.......... The official finish date for the Panther GB was Feb 2004. There are still a few stragglers as you can see, so I guess if you can finish before them you can still have a badge....unless others object.
If you can find some references for a Panther late A in an active unit at Normandy 5-8 June 1944, you might be best to consider the D-Day GB for the kitty.

Dragon's late A is marketed as a Normandy vehicle, how's that for a referance.

Don't wait! Get building!
As was mentioned the official end was Feb. so the best thing may be to get involved in the D-Day build.
BTW: Which Dragon A do you have?
