Question. I read somewhere on the internet that there was either one or two PT-17 Stearman airplanes on the island that flew "patrol". Whether they were in the air somewhere or on the ground during the attack is beyond me though.

(It's been awhile since i've seen the recent movie "Pearl Harbor" and I hope i'm not just remembering something off of there).

If anyone has any information on whether they were there or not it would be much appreciated as the next build I will be starting is the PT-17. And if I could join this build with that aircraft, (as long as history allows it), I would enjoy it.

There was supposedly a civillian flight instructor in the air that morning giving a lesson.  In TORA,TORA,TORA the a/c was a Stearman.  This might give you an in if you want to build a Stearman. (the rest of the movie was pretty accurate, so I've got no real reason to doubt this).  Just out of curiosity, what are the dates of this build? They weren't mentioned at the front.

Oops. Saw the start date was listed a couple of posts earlier.  I'd like to get in on this build if i could.  Gives me a good reason/excuse to buy the Hobby Boss F4F-3 in 1/72.  Now gotta find markings for the MAG.

Well, i've started the A/C in the "AC" forum. I've only got the engine and figures done. So I don't know if I still qualify to join.

That and i'm not sure if the fact that it's in that movie still qualifies it to join? I'm building it up as a U.S.Navy trainer.

lewbud - there were actually several civillian birds airborne at the time of the attack.  i will take a look at my refs today and tomorow and try to get you some options.  the one that got me is there is a report of a civillian two engine plane that was shot down, it was found and deemed a japanese plane with the passengers deemed as spys.  it seemed a ring was found from a hawaiian high school.  this started a rumor about hawaiian boys participating in the attack.  however like with all accounts time has watered and changed the account.

It wasn't me that was looking to build a civilian a/c.  There was a gentleman a few posts up looking for a reason to build a Stearman and I was just trying to provide him with one.  I'm sure he would appreciate it though.  I'm planning to do a 1/72 Hobby Boss F4F-3 in VMF-211 markings by Yellow Wings.  The decals are for the a/c that were deployed to Wake, but if I can find the nos of the a/c that were left at Pearl, I can cobble up the rest from that sheet gotta query a few people.  Or, if you'll allow me I'll do one of the Wake defenders from the attack on the 8th and not worry about it.

sorry about that.  i missed the earlier post.  as for your build i think back to last year, and the year before when i worked through builds thinking they were of types and numbers associated with units involved in the spirit of the build and then found that they were wrong.  the spirit of the build is what counts.  i hope you are able to find the correct markings.  but i am finding that records from that time period are very scarce.  many were destroyed by a fire.  in other words if the build is correct except the plane number(based on historical fact) i believe i will let it pass.  with that being said, let me look around to see what i can come up with for you.

The beauty of this particular GB, which I'm in for the second year, is that Joe runs a tight ship and research is an important part, and in this case for something that many think they know a lot about, but there's always more.

Case in point, my subject the control tower at Ford Island. The structure that is there now was refurbished some years ago for the movie, and also was featured in the earlier movie TTT, where in both cases it looked more or less like this:

In point of fact on December 7, 1941 it was still under construction, and would seem to be one dark color. Missing was the office on top, it was an open platform.

There are quite a few damage photos of Ford Island taken that day from a high viewpoint, but they are not taken from that tower. They are taken from an airship mooring mast located several thousand feet to the south. And none show the other tower. The only photos I've found so far are the Japanese photos, in which the whole island is dark because of the early hour.

It's a real challenge, but I am hoping to find a description of the tower on that day.

Thanks Joe.  Any help would be appreciated.  From what I've found on the web, the rear echelon of the squadron was left behind.  According to one of the websites there were 11 operational a/c and one undergoing maintenance on 7 Dec.  If memory serves, the Yellow Wings decal sheet covers planes 1-13 so I should be able to represent any of the a/c left behind ( assuming 24 ac in a squadron).  Like I said any help would appreciated.

Didn't let Nam or Bondo do that for you over in the NAVAIR build and they stuck you with the FM kit?  If it were me I'd reconsider.

Nah Lewbud I did that to meself! I just kinda like the challenge to see if I can get the parts to fit. I can compare it to taking a Tamiya Swordfish and a Hasegawa FW-190 and making an Academy SBD outta of them. I figured I beeter do something good to pacify Nam after all my taunting.

 I am trying to get a feel for what everyone is doing here so I can try for something unique and festive! I love festive models!

 The fantastic modelers and great people here just make it almost impssible to not enjoy learning new things and stuff. This is gonna be pretty swell!

lewbud i will give it a good look this afternoon.  i think your plan is good though, and logical. 

well as with anything those who believe they know it all, are wrong.  the actual date for the us freezing japanese assets, closing ports to japanese vessels, and placing an embargo on oil sales was july 28 1941.  however this does not affect this build.  

1941

April 10  -  the imperial japanese navy is reorganized.  the 1st air fleet is organized.  

april 13  -  the japanese and russians sign a neutrality pact.

may 20  -  the japanese confirm, the us has broken and is reading some of the japanese codes.

june 20  -  the us stops oil shipments to anywhere except latin america and great britain.

june 26  -  vichy france permits japan to occupy french indochina.

july 17  -  a new japanese government is formed.

july 28  -  the us puts and embargo on oil sales, freezes assets, and closes ports to japanese vessels.

this is what japan calls the provocation for the attack on the hawaiian islands.  this my friends signals the beginning of pearl harbor 2008.
