pearl harbor 2008 thankyou

I just rejoined FS after a 2 year absence to rebuild home after hurricane Rita. I had started a Trumpeter 1/350 Arizona barely with EB details. I have the resin casted quays and just bought a resin model of the Vestal. I wanted to do a diorama of them tied together at pearl as the Day Before.

I just found out I would have painted my Arizona all wrong and if I am again mistaken someone please correct me but the ship was painted Mediterranian blue with turret tops of #1,2 & 4 painted red. Now, what color is the Vestal? Should I go with the magenta or chartruse paint scheme?

I will try my best to complete at least one model for the build. I manned the rail in 1966 on the USS Coral Sea headed for Viet Nam as we pulled into Pearl Harbor. It was an honor to visit the memorial.  

 I hope this doesn't interfere with football season.

Got my kit for the build today.  Quick OOB review.  Opening the box, you see a vacformed tray with protective voids for the various pieces.  There are two clear sprues one has a two piece canopy, the other a one piece.  Both clear sprues have the underwing windows to check the gear.  The fuselage is one piece with fine engraving and a molded in cockpit.  The wings and lower fuselage are one piece with finely engraved panel lines.  There is minimal flash and parting lines on both pieces.  The cowl and engine are molded in one piece, so some careful painting will be necessary.  However, the cowling is missing the two internal cheek scoops and seems more like the one on the F4F-3A. The prop has its own protective area in the tray and looks correct.  The one sprue contains the horizontal stabilizers, wheels, two piece landing gear, head rest, gunsight, and pitot tube.  Markings are for a yellow wing bird from VF-41 USS Ranger in the Atlantic 1941 and a blue bird from VF-3 aboard USS Lexington.  If you do the bird from VF-41, there are no chevron or fuselage stripes.  Hobby Boss says easy assembly on the box and they mean it as there are 21 parts total to the kit.  For a grand total of 8.99 this kit can be yours.  Here's pic of what's in the box.

 Well things are kinda quiet here lets liven them up a little. I got my order for this build in. Er at least one of them. The other is not going to be released until Sept 08 so thats a maybe. But like every good soldier I have a back-up.

 I have had a rough couple  builds lately so I am hoping this one goes together a little easier. It is the Grumman JRF Goose 1/48 scale by Czech Model. Bought it blind without reading a review or anything. It was on the front of the Squadron mail order pamplet they send out monthly. In the description I saw decals for Wheeler Field 1941 and thought that would be a different subject. 

 Looks pretty cool so far we shall see how it falls together. I mean how could you not fall in love with that color scheme?  Wish me luck!

 Well ok here is a little bit of work so far. The kit itself is on par with limited run kits like Classic Airframes so keep your dremel handy!. The resin parts are true details and very nice! Adding a little bit of detail to the smooth injection pin filled insides. Not sure how much will show but has to be better than just nothing. Why add a resin interior with smooth gobbed up side walls? Quick job but better than nothing. Got the wings and tail together fairly painless ly time to start on the pit and cabin.!

great progress so far guys.  i have minimal progress but i do have some.  no pictures yet though.  waiting till the pit is painted.

 Looking forward to some pics Joe.  I am guessing that everyone was skeptical of my paper ribs but I am happy with the results. The cabin will not be nearly as visable when sealed up so I am one who loves to experiment.  Let you see how it comes together primed and painted. Add the illusion of a little rivet detail with a simple push pin and you have a cheap but nice stage for the resin parts. Much better than smooth walls with ejector pin marks. Have a look.

Primed and painted the wings and tail flats to give the glossy paint some time to dry.

Start putting it together painting as I go.

Slowly coming together. Lots of test fitting to ensure a painless joining of the fuselage halfs but a few more details and touch ups should be ok. I reenforced the very rear wall as the tail wheel attaches to it and I want to make sure it is sturdy.

sfcmac - That IS a great subject.... good luck! I like your rivet detail experiment, only thiing I would suggest wouldbe to use a metal straightedge as a guide so you have a straight line. nice looking IP.

I hated PH the movie, such a Hollywood-esque exageration & stilyzed, compared to TTT... I heard an interview with Dolittle's daughter (Military history podcasts), her family took umbrage at the portrayal of him in the PH movie, nothing like the real person.

Ah J Mart, Your not the only one who suggested that. Actually that was an experiment as it won't show when this beast is closed up. Other than being able to tell there is something there. I have confiscated one of the wifes scrap book cutters and some thicker card stock for future endevors. Even had some luck  shaping parts and solidifing them with thin superglue.  Handy when there is no p-e set and you need a detail.

 Lets give an update at where I am at. Got all the major assemblys done, now painted. This is my first use of gloss paints on any subject so I am learning there are big differences.  The resin engines were not a whole lot more detailed than the plastic so I got them as close as I could adding wires rims and data plates.

Did up the scratch made crew and after two days painting am leaving it be to dry before proceeding.  ( Not easy as it is screaming come touch me! )  Here are a couple pics to show where I am at.

 Keep on suggesting as I probably will try just about anything ! Well almost.

Found an interesting site while trying to determine how many aircraft were left at Pearl by VMF-211 at the time of the attack.  According to Bluejacket.com, 12 were deployed to Wake and 10 were left behind.  Here's the url

I had a long chat last week with a woman at the Pacific Air Museum. It seems that the Ford Island control tower was still under construction on that day. Very interesting, but no photos.

I think I can find the name of the General Contractor, who was a lighthouse builder. If so, I hope to get a drawing or drawings of their crane setup.

Thanks for the link, I had seen in one of the earlier posts and followed it.  There was another link that led me to the different squadrons involved, but I forget where it was.  I know its somewhere on one of the earlier pages of this build.  Your build looks quite intriguing, and I thought I liked obscure and off the wall stuff at times.  Look forward to seeing it progress.  Now for an update on my build.  Upon further review (along with finding some reviews), it seems Hobby Boss has pulled a fast one and simply branded their -4 as a -3.  Some of this will be easy to correct with some putty and a delicate touch with the sandpaper.  Now if I succumb to the pull of AMS, I'll have to replace the cowl and get an aftermarket engine as the cowl and engine are one piece on the HB kit.  Will do further research.

Very colorful markings that were all but gone by that time. Guess the Army needed some visability on this one. This was a real painful build at times. Tried my patience waiting for the glossy paints to dry but here she is. Holler away!

Thanks Aaron.  I've got a few more panel lines on the wings to fill, then some minor rescribing.  I'm still thinking about what to do about the pit, but leaning towards shooting it with int green and int black for the panel and leave it at that.  In divine scale the IP is darn near invisible anyway.  Kudos to you and your Goose.  You did a great job with a difficult kit.

Aaron, the Goose is wonderful. I have never ever seen that subject. Joe's GB is one of my two favorites- you may know of the other, ye' reprobate- because it is that transition between the good and the bad. Imagine what and where that bird was doing a year later.

I haven't spoken to my source again in two weeks, in Honolulu, but I believe I have enough to start. I'm building at 1/350, the base of the tower model is a brass tube 1/2" in dia. by 4" tall.

But I have the little PE stairs from my warship scrap box, which is not large.

The whole thing is raw cast iron color, and will have a derrick at the top, with shoring to hold up the deck.

 Thanks fellows. I just watched the movie today. ( The Hokey one where Ben Afleck is in the Battle of Britian, Pearl Harbor and the Doolittle Raid.) Still put me in the mood to read on Pearl Harbor stuff again.  Hard to believe there are no photos of that tower. Ill keep looking as well!

After all that I musta been tired cuz I missed the yellow prop tips and a black walkway on the wing. Fixed it and it's hanging on the wall now.

Well lewbud, it survived the Hurricane.  I thought those fellows would like to see an Army Sea Plane. It wasn't qualified for the build as I started way to early on it but I figured it is kinda unique looking. The actual Aircraft was destroyed at Wheeler Field during the attack. I do not believe any of the sea planes there survived. Hard to find the documentation but from what I have read Wheeler field didn't have many Aircraft that survived. I would love to find the actual photo of this bird as I know the Navy had painted over most of the bright colors. Seems like some Utility Aircraft were left colored for visability and I am not sure about the seaplanes on the battle ships. I have seen everything for the Bright yellow wings to Gray and blue.

 Also quite a bit of variations on the Japanese Aircraft, at least on the Vals and Kates. Seems the fighters on both sides were pretty standard colors. Not sure as to why. Kinda like trying to figure out how the Us Navy decided on which camo measure to use on which ship? No Idea.
