I am off all next week.....not vacation..........due to slow business! So I have to beg off from the Noreastcon this weekend....can't spare the mad money, in case things don't pick up soon!

But I will be building the 1/48 PBY-5 I mentioned in other posts, once it is re-released in June. I'm really torn about buying two and trying to replicate that famous photo of the bombed out PBY on the apron during Pearl. We'll see......the kit is supposed to be about $22 per.....so it's affordable.

Let's post some thinking here folks! 

david i have most of these photos thanks to many folks from around the world.  seen in this way they are very moving.  i had tears in my eyes when i watched it.

Hi Joe and All! Going to Noreastcon in upstate NY at end of month (Of course there is a shopping list!)

But I have learned that RevelloGram is re-issuing the PBY-5a at the end of June! Tower Hobbies will have them. So I will be building that for this build. But while at the Noreastcon.....I will be fishing for another project.

(Whew!) I did my research at a site Joe provided and was glad to see that there were PBY-5's at Pearl that day. Along with nearly every other PBY variant!

They were also somehow erected by an internal jib of a simple design section by section.

This is going to be fun.

I'm estimating the tower to be less than 200 feet tall, which means at 1/350 it'll be about 6 inches tall. But I'll include the base building and maybe a little apron with a few palms.

nam there is no kit.  it would have to be all scratched.  i have seen pics of several forts in the philipenes however not sure of the names.  they have one of the two remaining disappearing guns though.

Fightin' Joe.... I too have always been fascinated by the disappearing guns and other coastal artillery. An articulated model would be tough, but fun! Do they make a kit?

Also: Have you ever researched the Fort Drum that was situated in the water near the mouth of Manila Bay? I believe it was a steel and concrete structure built upon some protruding rocks. It was in the shape of an old battleship's foredeck (I can't spell foc'sal except for forecastle) It featured two large caliber double(?) or triple(?) gun turrets.

My ship (USS Fresno LST-1182) passed it twice in 1974.....both times I was on duty in the engine room. The only pic I ever saw was pre-war. I'm going to look it up, but wondered if any here had heard of it.

bill it sounds like a great project.  i have been working on getting info on a project like that myself.  for me the disappearing guns are most interesting and i want to build one.

I never seem to get my act together, but at long last...

I will be building a model of the Ford Island Air Traffic Control Tower, probably at 1/350.

I've contacted them for plans and have started drawings. It's a cast iron structure that actually dovetails with one of my other interests- lighthouses.

The stencils come from a set of 1/48 instrument dials from Mike Grant Decals. They just happened to be the right size. Some of the dials on the IP come from that set and others are just dry brushed.

fightnjoe - No I don't have that book, may need to add it to my collection. I did use this book from Peregrine Press on early cockpits. It gives only a psge to each aircraft, but they are colored photo's. Great Models carries it, but it recently went out of stock.  Also read in "Gabby, A fighter Pilot's Life" Francis Gabreski with Carl Molesworth on Schiffer Publishing, about his time in Hawaii

telsono have you the detail in scale for the p-40 volume 1?  it has great pictures of the interior and exterior of a redone p-36 in those markings.  the interior is shown as all alum.  the exterior appears as nmf top and bottom with the exception of the flying surfaces they were the dope

I decided to do a baremetal version of the P-36. According to Francis Gabreski, the P-36 was considered obsolete so they were not subject to the placement at the center of the field. Subsequently, more of these survived the initial onslaught and patrols were sent up with these aircraft. Gabby was one of thsoe pilots, a young Lt.

From what I have read, the bare metal version had a aluminum painted cockpit interior.

dan you are right.

p-40's were od over gray.  the peashooters were changing to od over gray but there seems to be some evidence of pre war schemes.  i have seen pics of prewar schemes (cant seem to find them to offer them to you) so that scheme would be ok.

ok, I presume the P -40s were OD in color top/sides with a light blue/gray under side

BUT were the peashooters still in the old yellow wing colors?

if so I might be forced to do one of these

This is great, last night I took out my 1/32 Special Hobbies kit of the P-36 Pearl Harbor Defenders and started it, I guess you can count me in.
