great progress in this thread.

sept 24 1941.  a message from tokyo to the consulate general instructs for reports on us vessels in pearl harbor.

nov 5 1941.  yamamoto issues top secret order no. 1 to the combined fleet.  detailing the plan for the attack on pearl harbor.

november 25 1941.  the combined fleet sails from the kuriles.

dec 2 1941.  the plan is given the go signal.  japanese embassy instructed to destroy all codes.

december 7, 1941 a flight of sbd-1's and f4f-3's were inbound from the carrier enterprise.  this flight, scout 6, arrived durring the attack.  although some did manage to land and then carry out searches for the enemy some did not.  this subject, 6-s-3, was piloted by ens. m. gonzalez with raidioman kozelek, rm3c.  the action reports from the wingman, ens. f.t. weber, follow;




and so on to my submission to this build.

Well, I finished the Mohawk.  The Pennsylvania is still being worked on.  Sanding the joint in the hull now, then repainting it. Superstructures are about 90% rebuilt now. Boats and planes have yet to be started.  Not sure if she'll be 100% done by the deadline, but then again, she was in drydock at Pearl.  So she wasnt 100% on Dec 7th anyway.

No worries here Joe! I'm still piddling with a couple projects to get in under the deadline. As always just look for them to pop randomly. ( Kinda  like a surprize attack)

It was my original intent to build one Val Type 99 from each of the attacking carriers. Rather ambitious project I was reluctant to reveal it for fear of not being able to complete it in time. But everyday I have worked at least a little on them and have 5 pretty well looking good with 1 more to go.

I apologize for the fuzzy pics but the daughter has my good camera and it is dark and rainy here for the last 3 days.  I put these up just to give you an idea and feel of what only 5 of these look like and imagine what all of them looked like on that day!

Sorry forgot to mention the IJN gray ones are the Fujumi? Testers 1/48 classic that I have collected. The Green one is a newer Hasegawa 1/48 Val.

I have four ongoing GB's in progress, but the PHGB has the closest deadline....and I was handicapped a bit by my kit pre-order was delayed from June until September.

I'm splitting time amongst all the GB's, but the Yellow Wing PBY will be ready on time!

today, november 13 2008, is the final day for new entries.   for those who have joined first my apologies.  i have not been as active as in years past.  i work two jobs, grocery manager in a small store and real estate, i just havent had the time to devote to building nor to posting.  this build has taken a life of its own it seems.  when i first joined fsm the build was hosted by fsm member obiwan.  to me this was perfect, it combined two things that i was very interested in.  the second time i hosted the build.  i tried to put some of the history into it.  this is the fourth year for this build.  this year i am proud to say the build is on four different forums.  thankyou to all who have joined.  thankyou to all who have finished.  for those who read this and think they wont finish before the "deadline".  the purpose of the build is for tribute.  please finish.  dont let it hit the unfinished/never to be finished pile.

I just got a project on on Nimitz Pier that starts next Spring, so I can do all kind of research for you all for Pearl harbor 2009 that Joe is going to host.

This is always my favorite GB and I do about 3 a year.

I'm starting this in about a week so I may not finish on time, but I WILL FINISH.

I am new to these forums, and I have to say,I really like the idea behind this group build.

It is a very nice tribute to those veterans of the worst day for the American Military.

If you missed it.....I got my Revell repop PBY-5 and am building it for this GB.....I have PC picture issues but will have WIPs up soon.

Hey guys, didnt want you to think I forgot about this one.  Been busy with other projects, including a total remodel of the model room. 

As for my entry, I have just about finished the construction of the USS Mohawk.  It is a USCGC that was at Pearl.  Its a 1:350th resin and PE kit from Commander Models.  Its not a bad kit, but as I now have references of the REAL Mohawk, I find it is very inaccurate.  A friend on mine [former navy] went to Key West and took tons of ref shots of the cutter.  And now I find myself doing a ton of extra work. But she should be receiving paint later today, if all goes well.

On a second entry, I had started and done about 75% of the construction of a 1:350th USS Arizona.  It's being converted to the USS Pennsylvania, the ship my great uncle served on.  I have since disassembled a great deal of it, and started to rebuild and add PE. Since I took it back down to about a 20-25% build state, I wondered if I might also include this in the GB?  Please let me know.  Thanks.

No offense Bondoman, but I was never impressed with the studio mock-up of the PBY, (not to mention that it was totally out of place.)

i renetly won 2nd place at rochester model show last sunday in smaller than 1/600 scale.

Well lewbud, it survived the Hurricane.  I thought those fellows would like to see an Army Sea Plane. It wasn't qualified for the build as I started way to early on it but I figured it is kinda unique looking. The actual Aircraft was destroyed at Wheeler Field during the attack. I do not believe any of the sea planes there survived. Hard to find the documentation but from what I have read Wheeler field didn't have many Aircraft that survived. I would love to find the actual photo of this bird as I know the Navy had painted over most of the bright colors. Seems like some Utility Aircraft were left colored for visability and I am not sure about the seaplanes on the battle ships. I have seen everything for the Bright yellow wings to Gray and blue.

 Also quite a bit of variations on the Japanese Aircraft, at least on the Vals and Kates. Seems the fighters on both sides were pretty standard colors. Not sure as to why. Kinda like trying to figure out how the Us Navy decided on which camo measure to use on which ship? No Idea.

 Thanks fellows. I just watched the movie today. ( The Hokey one where Ben Afleck is in the Battle of Britian, Pearl Harbor and the Doolittle Raid.) Still put me in the mood to read on Pearl Harbor stuff again.  Hard to believe there are no photos of that tower. Ill keep looking as well!

After all that I musta been tired cuz I missed the yellow prop tips and a black walkway on the wing. Fixed it and it's hanging on the wall now.
