Fantasy Fliers Group Build
Posted by Red13Bar on Monday, June 30, 2008 7:53 PM

  O.k., recruits, listen up!

Here are the Rules of engagement for this group build:

1:  The planes built here must be of WW2 vintage.  Meaning; paper projects, prototypes (no combat time), and unbuilt variants (pre-designed) of combat planes are welcome. Planes used during the Korean War are also eligible.  Anything built after the Korean War is un-usable.

2:  All scales welcome.

3:  If you do not want to build a model of any of the above, you have another option;  with purpose in mind, build a model of a self designed variant of any WW2 combat plane.  For example: a shipoard Dornier 335 sub-hunter, or a recon version of the BF-110. Keep the version within the limits of praticality, though; No Lasers!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

4: Planes that may have entered combat but didn't due to the end of the war (such as the P-80 and P-59 Aircobra) are welcome.  Just make sure they appear combat ready and in a feasible paint scheme for the chosen front.

5: Personal nose art on planes is welcome.

6:  Kit must be unbuilt or barely started (ie, no more than a cockpit) unless approved.

7: Have fun!  This is a very free build, designed for fun and creativity, not rivet counting (you can if you wish)!Burger [BG]

8: By suggestion of cardshark_14, here is the build timeframe.  GB will run from September 1st 2008 to May 1st 2009.

Now, to work, men!

Hey Red, yeah I am ready for this.  I will bring out a ME262 don't yet know size either 1/48 or 1/32 that I will Modify to look like a twin tailed variant that was drawn up.  Also you should include some dates or deadlines.

This should be fun though hope more people join.

Yeah, I just got more info from spiralcity.  I'm going to move the start day to September 1st of this year and run it till spring sometime.  I haven't quite decided on the end date.  Do you think  that's long enough?

Sounds like a cool project.  I look forward to seeing it finished.

Red, put me down as a starter.

Not sure what I'll build, but I'm sure I can think of something.

Yeah those dates work, it will people time to figure out what they want to do and how to do it.  Spring is probably the best length of time because some of these will require a lot of scratch building.  But I am looking forward to it.

I like the idea of a self designed varian of a world war 2 plane the only plane I've got that is barely started is a BF-109 but I've already asembled the piolt figure and half of the cockpit and the propeler but I lost it so I could atempt to make a jet vershon of it I'd like to try that if it's cool with you but I might change to something else depending on what I buy betwean now and then.

Sweet!  I have a kit that's been waiting for just this sort of GB!  I don't know much about who made this kit, but it's a 1/48 all-resin P-51H.  For a long time I've been toying with the idea of painting it in ETO colors, something like this:

The P-51H would have given most of the late-war Luftwaffe birds a fair run for their money (FW-190D, Ta-152, even most of the jets).  The largely olive paint scheme that I'm planning leads to the conclusion that allied air-supremacy was still a long way from being obtained over Europe!

Red,

How long are you running this build? If you run it for at least 8 months I feel I can jump in. As it is I need to start my IL-2 for the Mud Movers build. I'm trying to find the time.

If I have time I'll build the Me 263A-1 Czech Model 1/48 out of the box.

Hi Red13Bar,

I'm interested! I have a whole schwarm of Luft '46 subjects, it's just a matter of deciding what to go with. A three-seater Me 262? Trimaster's Ta 152? The Mistel IV? The four-engine Ar 234C? The A-9 piloted rocket? Huma's Me 263, 309 or 609. Hmmm... There was a rocket-boosted Mustang... Lockheed's L-133 radical proposal (which I think has been kitted)... The Martin-Baker MB-5 (kitted, I think). The All-Aus Commonwealth Aircraft CA-20 pseudo-Mustang-on-steroids (definitely not kitted!)... Would the hybrid-powerplant MiG-13 count?

Cheers,

TB379

Hi Red12Bar,

I've checked my stash log and while I have around a dozen appropriate items it's a question of what I can get to easily. I'm leaning toward the MPM 1:72 Mistel IV (twin Me 262) at this time. I also have a strange hankering for a P-80 in squadron colors... Think Glamorous Glen IV, or Detroit Miss II. Hmmm!

This'll be a fun build -- but I can't absolutely promise I'll get to it as there may be a house move falling around November and I have five other GB projects in hand already! For that reason I won't take my badge until I actually start the model.

Cheers,

TB379

Hi Red 13 Bar,

I've pulled the MPM Mistel IV from my stash and it looks pretty good -- the upper component is the Me 262 A2a/U2 with a glazed nose for the bombardier who would remote-pilot the drone into the target. The kit is a mix of raised and recessed panel lines, begging for at least some rescribing, and the decals look pretty good. The offered scheme is quite drab, RLM 81 upper, over RLM 76 lower, with the drone in natural metal. As it's hypothetical I could be more adventurous and still be equally correct, though with the strictures late in the war a simple scheme is also technically reasonable.

It's on the shelf, and I'll get to it if I can!

Cheers,

TB379

would the Do335B-6 Nightfighter be eligible?  If it is, I would build the Dragon 1/72 kit.

Yes, that is also eligible, as are any other weird and whacky things you can do with it! (no lasers!)

Right, then! Pilot Officer Jacob, welcome to the squadron!

BTW, all, I want to make one small issue clear.  Any technology created up to the end of the Korean War is eligible material for a "what-if." Anything after the end of the Korean war is not usable.  Therefore, an F-86 would be another option aside from a P-80 or -59.
