Hey there  All!  I chose this for the 48 hour weekend GB and it was a crazy time for all and still is for many!  It says Army really big on it thought those who missed the GB madness might like a peak.

The P-36A I promised is done. History follows from the Airforce Museum page.

Lt. Rasmussen mounting his P-36 in his pajamas on the morning of December 7, 1941. The airfield was under attack and his was one of a few aircraft that made it into the air before being destroyed. Once in the air Rasmussen charged his machine guns but to his surprise they wouldn't stop firing. He pulled the charging handle back into the locked position so that he wouldn't shoot off all his rounds before meeting the enemy. In his first attack he shot down one enemy Zero, then was attacked by 2 other Zeros. The hits severed his rudder and hydraulics and he lost control of the aircraft. As he lost altitude he regained control and headed into some clouds to avoid being attacked then made it back to the airfield. Landing without brakes he rolled off the end of the runway. The plane was a total write off except for the engine.

The ground personnel who had witnessed the whole scene came running up to his plane cheering. After the attack over 500 bullet holes were counted in the aircraft, and a 20mm shell and bullet were found lodged in the radio directly behind him which saved his life.

I chose the 1/48 Academy ex Hobby Craft kit.

A few work in progress pics! This was a blast!

I printed my own decals using the Testers Decal maker kit. This option isn't available with the kit decals and I would like to find the Old Pearl Harbor defender version by Hobby craft as it looks cool!  Different scheme though as well.

Here is How she turned out in about 26 hours.

I really have enjoyed this build Joe! If you can't tell by all the models. Tongue <img src=" border="0" width="15" height="15" />

Your comments add a lot to the history for me an I always learn something new from them!

I'll be watching for the other builds! Thumbs Up <img src=" border="0" width="15" height="15" />

Darth, it looks like you have tamed that beast.  Good looking P-38!

Roy, I was kinda just writing in jest there, so don't take time away from your family on my account.  If you can get other pictures at some point, that would be great.

JOHN

Well John, I apologize.  I'm not sure where I saw the name Roy and mis-associated it with you ... Perhaps I'm just getting loopy with the holidays here.

Fellow Group Builders,

It has been a while since I posted a progress report on my P-38J.  One reason is because work has been crazy.  The other reason, is because this is a Revell kit.  I've read the horror stories on this forum about the Revell P-38J.  With my "Michael's" 50% coupon in hand, I picked up the kit, thinking I could tame this beast.

I'm not an advanced modeler, this is only my 4th kit, 2nd with an airbrush.  After putting this together, I feel that you need to have some advanced skill to make this bird look good.  I've had to sand & putty almost every interconnecting piece.  I've done ok with most of the plane, however, the hardest part for me was the nose.  NOTHING seemed to fit here.  The cone & gun bay doors just didn't want to line up.  I used tons of putty to make the pieces look flush.  I lost a few rivets in the process.  Another component with fit issues is the canopy.  I don't know if I got a bad piece of plastic or what, but it wasn't even close.  Fortunately, I mounted it before spraying & filled the gaps with squadron putty.

I wanted to try a natural metal finish.  This would be a good kit to practice on.  If I messed it up, I wouldn't be upset at trashing an inexpensive model.  After the airframe construction was complete, I sprayed it with Mr. Surfacer 1000 as a primer.  I found a few areas that needed to be repaired, so I broke out the putty once again & sanded away.  After more putty & more Mr. Surfacer, i was ready for Alclad II.  I chose to shoot the plane in white aluminum.  After the entire plane was covered, I taped off a few panels & shot them with duraluminum for contrast.

Tonite, I hope to tape off the nose & twin booms to shoot the anti-glare paint.  Here's a pic:

Nice job on Miss Marilyn!  The only complaint I have is that when I see a picture with other builds like that last one, I really want to see what else you have in the display cabinet!Smile [:)]

Good idea... I'll try and find a cheap-ish bubbletop and call the scene "My Two Jugs", and enter it in a contest under my wife's name Wink [;)]

Nice work.  The only question I have is, is it missing the pitot tube?  There appears to be an opening along the leading edge of the port-side wing.

Here's "Sleepy Time Gal" finished...with the exception of a final dull coat:

The wash I initially applied was the "Promodeller's Wash".  Was a bit too gray in the panel lines...so I went back over with some sludge wash.  Small issue, I think the first wash (when I wiped it after letting it dry) took off some of the top layer of the gloss coat as I couldn't get the excess removed from the sludge wash.  Sooo, I had to overspray with some XF-51 Khaki Drab to get a little "dusty" effect.  Also had to add a 1/48 P-51 USAAF decal on the left wing as the initial kit decal was ruined by the sludge wash.  Live and learn I guess.  This is the first aircraft model completed since a 1/72 Hasegawa A-7D ANG bird I did in high school in 1987.

On a side note, I found a pair of 1/48 .50cal MGs from the Academy  F-86 "MiG Killer" kit in my spares.  I think I can use those to piece together the twin .50 mount for the A-20.  So I may end up piecemealing that one together.  Or I might just wait for another GB for it.

Correct, only just doing some panel lines and recessed areas.  That was the main reason for the gloss coat.

Curious... You sealed it in a gloss coat rather than flat... That becasue you're gonna apply washes first?

Still have the canopy to paint...probably shouldn't have taken the liquid mask off, but that stuff SUCKS if you leave it on too long...

Hans,

Thanks for the offer.  I'll give it a couple days from AMT and see if I can get 'em from them first.  All the 1/48 armor kits I have, I might just snag a couple of the .50s and link 'em up with some styrene rod (it runs underneath the ammo cans).  Otherwise ya might see an inbound PM from your neighbor to the north.

Dunno about "A-20 Curse"... Might be the "Douglas Curse"... His A-20, my A-26, and now I find that my SBD (A-24) is missing the cockpit tub!  Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over?  Anyway, I can get around it, I reckon...

On another note- Hey Smitty... I might be able to help you out.. I have the 1/48 A-20G from AMT-Ertl if that's the kit you're building... I may be able to vac-form you some clear parts... And I think (not sure, have to look) I may have the fifties from a previous build of that kit as well.. I never throw away guns from trashed models...
