                        Probably Armored Fighting Vehicle. The Germans used panzerkampfwagen which loosely translates to armored battle wagon.

                        So. I was thinking, we know the origin of the name was simply a way to disguise what they were transporting, but if a tank wasn't called a tank what would you call it?
