Tamiya SdKfz 7/2 . Completed build pictures .
Posted by Shellback on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 6:08 PM

I had this old Tamiya kit in my stash since the 1980's . I got the wild idea that I would upgrade it with Eduards pe set 35489 and a RB 37 mm barrel .Oh , and some replacement tracks by Friul . And less I forget the tires and wheels replaced with resin ones from Tank Workshop . Kinda nuts to put this much money into this old kit but it will be fun and interesting getting all of these a.m. goodies attached to this old piece of plastic .

I'll post pics of the a.m. goodies as construction goes along .

Hey guys thanks for looking in .

This is cool . The date 1972 molded into the chassis . That was the date that the SdKfz 7 ( the version with all of the seats ) was released by Tamiya.

Some very basic detail down here .I wont be doing much upgrading underneath .

And of course what would a WW II German armor vehicle be without all of those wheel parts ?

This should be sweet Carl. Great subject and I know it'll  be the bomb after all the AM's are added.

This is the Eduard p.e. set for the Tamiya SdkFz 7/2 that I'll be using .

Here's a step by step on the Friul tracks with the explanation being below the picture .

1.The kit tracks are these ancient vinyl contraptions . They are too wide and poorly detailed by todays standards .I went with a set of Friuls .

2. and 3. . The kits wheels are made to fit the vinyl tracks which are overly wide so some surgery is needed to make them narrower to fit the Friuls .

4. The holes in the tracks for the brass wire connecting pins (you cut your own from a coil of brass wire provided by Friul) have a bit of flash and need drilling out .

5. , 6. and 7. Some of the track assembly .The rubber pads on the tracks are a separate part (those rectangular pieces at the bottom of 7 ) And they fit snuggly into a notch in the tracks .

8. The Friuls assembled and wrapped around the modified width wheels .

Great start. Those tracks must be tiny little buggers.

Nice looking project, Carl. This was always a great kit as it was. It should be quite the stunner when you're done.

The front suspension was steerable but looked like a toy when built so I added some scratch built parts to the front axle .

The vinyl tires had a heavy seam down the middle of the tread and I ruined one tire trying to sand off the  seams ridge . I replaced them with a resin set from Tank Workshop .

Here's how it looks with the new tires/ wheels .

I was even able to make the front axle pivot .

The side screens were done with the p.e. from the Eduard set . The Tamiya kit has the gun platform access ladders molded in the stowed position so I made the ladders from scratch with styrene rod so I could display them in the down position . I used copper wire to attach the side screens to the side s of the gun platform .

A view of the rear with some of the Eduard pe details .

Eric good to hear from you .

Clint , the license plate itself is a separate piece of p.e..There are two choices of plate numbers to correspond with the two choices for the front bumper . A thin piece of styrene is behind the formation light to give it a thickness.

Most excellent work and upgrades on the ol' 70's kit; very encouraging!  I'm jealous of those front wheels and tires.  My Italeri 6x6 sure could use an upgrade.  I know they're out there somewhere...
