I like this look; is this an in game scheme, something based on a wartime photo or from your imagination?

Thanks guys!

I spent tens times more time masking than I did spaying the tank this time. I used sky grey so it wasn't so stark white. I'm going to use some white oil paints to give this the white wash effect next. Add some chipping and some other weathering to make it look like its a heavy iron beast.

She looks good! Nice shading and variation in colour without going over-board.

Pictures!

I think this will be a good base to start layering my effects onto.

What do you guys think? I like it. :)

Time is a commodity alright. Last pay period I had 42 hours of OT in two weeks. End of the month is always the busiest time.

My wife never had the surgery. Insurance wouldn't approve it because, although it causes her pain and discomfort, it's not "life threatening" so they won't pony up the dough.

thanks for remembering, Dwayne. I appreciate that.

Back on topic however, I can't wait to show you guys what I've got done with the paint. A little modulation and chromatic blending. It looks mean! Lol!

M. Brindos

My apologies for not having any pictures yet. Most of my weekends have been spent working on my car.

I have made some progress on the Tiger though. The wash came out very random and dark so I mixed up neutral grey, black, and dark blue and sprayed over it with more modulation.

As it sits right now I am almost decided as to leave it as-is because it looks so cool. But I've been doing a lot of thinking about those tiger stripes and have looked up some patterns for reference.

I think I have a strategy formulated that will give me the tiger stripe pattern while also looking like a winter wash.

Ill do my best to document it as I progress.

Again I apologize for the lack of pictures. This new job makes me lots of money now with all the OT, but I lack any energy on the weekends anymore to get much accomplished lol.

Cheers mates. It looks good. Pictures soon!

Hey Mike, looking forward to the pics.  New job with OT sounds like a good thing, even if it is getting in the way of bench time.  Seems like money (or making it) vs. time and energy is a constant struggle with this hobby.

I seem to remember your wife was going to have surgery a little while back.  I am hoping that worked out well for her.

Be well and have fun my friend,

D

Well the paint settled down without any issues. No evidence of crinkling remains.

Guess that won't be part of my effects strategy after all.

Pictures this weekend.

I painted it with Vallejo and cleared with Testors rattle can dull cote. It shouldn't have crinkled, but it did. It should play nicely into my effects though.

I think I didn't allow for enough  cure time, Gam.

I'll check it out when I get home.

Mike: Did you put an acrylic down before the oils/enamel? It should have protected the paint from the crinkling effect. In any case looking forward to seeing the photos when you get more done with her.

I thinned some artists oil paint with Testors enamel thinner and it ate into and crinkled the paint a bit. I think it will actually work with the effects I'm trying to reproduce so I'm actually okay with that.

I'll get some pictures up later. I haven't taken any yet and the thinner need a lot of time to evaporate before I can do anything with the oil anyways.

I'm kinda excited to see how this effect turns out. :)

Pictures and progress report to come. ;)

Edit: I forgot to mention that I applied the oil wash over a flat coat. For those of you who don't know that means the oil wash won't completely buff out of the paint. Leaving the tones much darker than the original color. If I had used the wash over a gloss coat the wash would pretty much just wipe off without affecting the original color much, but staying in the cracks and crevices.

Since I want this color close to black, but not black, I used the dull coat so much of the color will change to a darker almost black but still show my color variances underneath.

I could also have used a black filter to almost the same effect, but them a pin wash would've been necessary to fill in the cracks, crevices, and recesses.

So the choices I've made should land me in the same area with one application instead of two. The crinkled paint should also lend me an extra effect, that is if it doesn't settle back down without issues.

I guess I'll know once I get home from work tonight. :)

My crazy modulation doesn't look bad at all. I've just sprayed a coat of Testors dull cote in preparation of adding the black oil wash. That should darken it up really well. :)

Any thoughts? Questions? :)

Looks good so far.  As long as your son thinks it looks cool, you will have done a fine job.  I'm sure you will pull this off.

im sure he'll like it, it's his idea lol. Thanks for the confidence boost!  :D

I think I know what I'm doing lol. But for the effect I'm going to try it has to be darker.

12 years already?! I never got past level 16 back then. The barrens was a war zone! Lol!

It looks good, I know it is incorrect, but as a kid, almost all German tank toys and kits were grey, so this looks "right", for lack of a better term!

BTW, the WoW Corrupted Blood incident was 12 years ago today.

I'm going to add a black oil wash later. I think it will help unify the overall color tone once I finish painting.

Remember, my goal is to use the grey tones to mimic the black stripes of a Siberian tiger. The color has to be dark but not pure black because the Germans didn't ever use black on their armor.

This is a challenge to mimic reality with a little fantasy. That's why I think I'm attracted to the idea.

I don't know yet if I'll get it right.

Looks good so far. If you go with washes etc they'll add a little more colour variation to the grey.

Well here's one. It's just a base color, which looked darker indoors. So I'm going to throw some other shades of grey on it. I'm going to try to keep it random and then add some modulation and hope it turns out crazy, but cool.

So here's hoping it turns out.

I will just stick to playing CoD, MoH, Halo, and a little Madden. Going online with WoW and WoT and getting called a "Noob" by a 12 year old would be soul crushing.

Returning hijacked thread back to you, Mr. Brindos.Smile

Too bad he didn't play Delta Force 2 in PC version a good few years ago. The squad I belonged to would send him home crying. LOL!!!

Loved Delta Force and also played the heck out of Fighter Ace, which got me building WW2 fighters. Stopped with delta when there were too many cheats running around invisible knifing folks.

I got the primer on yesterday. Sorry, no pictures yet - it's all black now, no biggie.

Hopefully more to show later.

This is the first time I've done it this way, so I guess we're going to find out if weathering is easier, eh? Lol

My strategy with the tracks is to paint the tracks and wheels in a custom dark steel enamel I made up years ago for such applications. I'll then spray some of the modulated greys over the centers of the wheels and see how that works out as a base for the weathering.

This one is coming along nicely!  Im definitely going to use your method of track installation for my next build.  Looks like it makes painting/weathering so much easier!

Rob,

I started off in vanilla as well. I still have a toon stuck at level 16 at the crossroads On a PvP sever. Just getting that far with the daily asshat raids padding their PvP kills was frustrating.

I made my best progression in Panda getting all the way through the raid ladder on heroic. Got my legendary and my title.

Ive not played much in this newest xpac. They're literally just giving legendaries away now. There's no sense of accomplishment in that.

Heck they're even dropping them as random loot!

So I'll see if the challenge comes back in the next xpac.

Not much time for it these days anyways lol.

Well happy labor day!

My one day 1:1 project is nearly complete on day three, so I haven't even sprayed any primer yet. :(

I'll likely find some time later this afternoon or next weekend. Bummer, 'cuz I was hoping to have the first layers of paint on by now lol.

I wish you all a happy Labor Day! :D
