Panther A Zimmerit
Posted by JWest21 on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 5:42 PM
I recently picked up Verlinden's damaged Panther A zimmerit. The pattern is a diamond pattern, as opposed to the usual square tile pattern. I was wondering if anyone had any reference pictures or any info on any diamond patterned A's. I am trying to figure out what turret number and what colors to paint it. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Panthers had many different patterns of zimmerit applied to them.. The best bet would be to buy a good referrence book and build off that... There are some decent pics online, it's just a matter of finding the sites that have them..
Here is a link you can try..

Apparently Squadron's "Panther in Scale" has a picture of a turret with the diamond shape on page 31. I haven't seen it (my local hobby shop doesn't have it. I will have to go look at the next model show in September to see if it is worth buying)

A picture of a diamond pattern must be more rare than a picture of Bigfoot and Elvis together. I went to my local Hobbyland and looked through Squadron's Panther and Action and an Osprey book and all I found was a picture of a turret with a diamond pattern underneath a ridged pattern and a grainy picture of a Bergpanther with diamond zimmerit, It was very nice of Verlinden to make such an obscure set. That's sarcasm, in case it didn't translate to text. Thank you very much for looking for me.

I figure I will have to throw the Panther A on the "waiting to be built" pile until I find an example of the tank or just get some other tiled zimmerit

No need to look through your 400 pics again for anything else for me. I appreciate you looking once- no need to do it again

I know it's not much, but I did find this:

http://www.panzerdiesel.com/data/e/27p5_karo.html?PHPSESSID=c2fcaf106d839ffd95658218ea50cc46

There's a neat diamond patching on the hatch in the rear, and also I've see it on fenders. In fact, the Red 221 (the Early A I just did) had diamond cross hatching on the fenders in the pics I have seen and I carried the detail onto the rear turret hatch. Never seen one w/ a full hull that way though.

If you look on page 31 of Squadrons "Panther in Action" you will see a turret in a re-fit yard with the "diamond" patterned zimmerit..

I saw that. Unfortunately that has the combed second layer. Verlinden's set has a smooth diamond pattern. They must like their customers to really have to work for accuracy. On top of not having any info on the pattern they provide, they didn't include any instructions either, leaving me just two pics on the box to go by. What fun!

The pics I have of tiled "D"s in Italy are in a book that won't fit in a scanner. I think this pic might be one of its close kin somewhere in Italy. Can't tell without blowing up the picture though.

So maybe Verlinden should have made their diamond pattern for a D instead? That link looks like a monocolored tank (not going far out on a limb and guessing dunkelgelb) with no visible markings.

I should clarify in that I think that particular picture is a A, although I think I have some pics of tiled "D"s in Italy as well. Regarding that particular pic, I'm guessing 'gelb A and I think there are some turret numbers, but they are very faded.

Hard to tell what the turret numbers are. Based on what I have learned, I am thinking a plain gelb tank is the way to go. Not quite sure what to do about the numbers, however. I might just pick some from the spares box.

I say go with it JWest. Killing yourself with complete historical accuracies will keep you held up for a long time. Smile [:)] Verlinden's Zim is brass correct? If it is..I have some good techniques that work well on making sure that it goes on seemless. I used to be the zim guru of the forums..before I went on an extended hiatis after my duaghter was born Black Eye [B)]

Cheers

Mo,

Any tips you have for using PE Zimmerit would be appreciated! This will be my first time using it, so any help is appreciated. Your right about killing myself with historical accuracies. It's seems I have a touch of OCD...

Oh- and I understand the hiatus with a new daughter. I have a three year old and a 11 month old and I don't get much time to build anything. (I was working on a Pazer Mk. III before the three year old trashed my decals).

Here is the eduard zim set on my early A, I searched high and low for an early or late A with diamond zim and could not find one. This pattern most accurately represents early A factory applied zim, maybe you should go this route.

THATS what I had hoped to get. My mistake was ordering it on a laptop where I could barely see the picture. I thought it was more like that, but I guessed wrong. Chalk that up to a learning experience

Hey wildwilliam long time bud. Ya been getting back in the swing of things here. I am near completion of my Tiger 1 Mid Pro that I posted ages ago with full zim..hopefully I could get pics up by weeks end. I have a nice Stug III F that has had my eye for a long time..maybe it is time to break open the goodies. I'll post in that thread.

JWest..I use MSN and my MSN account is moses96thid@hotmail.com. If you ever need any help regarding using that brass zim, never hesitate to message me.

Cheers
