"The Hunters GB" (2/1/08 to 6/1/08)

Oh, hey Tigerman, made up my mind on a couple of builds you can put me down for:

1/35 Zvezda ISU-152

1/35 AFV Club M-18 Hellcat

Want to do something for the axis side as well, but can't make my mind up yet...StuG's certainly have been all the rage lately, though.

Try one of them Tamiya 1/48 kits.  Quarter scale rules!!  =P   As far as number and breakdown of parts, they are just as good as their large size brothers. 

The only thing I do not like at all is the die-cast hull actually.  I don't really break out my CA much since I solder up PE parts instead.  The last time when I was working on my KV1 in a hotel room, the CA overflew and went everywhere on the side of the hull.  I can say that's because I am just no good at it, but it could've been avoided if I just had plastic hulls like a normal 1/35 kit since I otherwise use Tamiya cement and extra-thin cement.  I guess they figured it went well when they put some diecast bottom plate for their 1/24 racecars, they'd put it in everything else like the 1/35 JGSDF light infantry vehicle's diecast hull, n those wheels of the leclerc.  The later was more or less of a WTH gimmick.  At least it shows that they are still innovative, n of course also coming up with new ways to justify charging a huge premium on the new kits.  Hopefully one day they will realize the market has grown a lot from the days of their r/c tanks and a real step we want them to take is that instead of more fun features while you push the model across the desk (the T26E3 comes to mind), they should include more extra detail pieces for the same extra cost.  Then we just might one day get a fret of PE that's more than a bare pair of engine grilles, and no longer having to buy a set of mesh from tamiya separately that apparently HAS to be used to finish the model.

Hey Guys, I just noticed that for this GB there are 5 Jagdpanzers, 4 StuGs, 3 Jagdpanthers and 3 Hellcats!  I think I'll change mine from a Jagdpanzer to a Firefly just to add some variety.....

Huh, funny you mention that...I just managed to snag a couple of them on Ebay SUPER cheap, figured I'd "see what they look like."

Sadly, neither one qualifies for this GB.

If it looks like there's an over-abundance of Hellcats, I could always do an M10 or Achilles instead...same deal with the StuG. Gotta do something German, though.

I've heard that the Tamiya is the best on the market, but as of yet, no late model. For the $$$, I haven't been impressed with the reviews of the Eduard kits.

DHM, we're insane, but in a good way, so fear not. Muhahahaha. Yes, is the Tamiya kit 1/35 or 1/48?

Well, I'm home today sick with the flu , but that won't stop me from getting some model work done!! .....at least I'll try....

Anyone have experience with the Italeri Jagdpanzer?  I'm not looking to correct any accuracy issues, just concerned with assembly fit and such.  After looking at the kit last night I decided that the kit tracks would be replaced with some old MK non-workable tracks that I have and probably needs an AM barrel...any suggestions for a suitable replacement?  Most of the tools will probably be replaced with better tools from the spares box.  Also, I want to do a late production vehicle with the upturned exhausts and steel wheels in front...the only markings and paint scheme on the instructions are for a monotone dunkelgelb scheme.  I would prefer to do an ambush scheme unless its not appropriate for late war vehicles.  Any ideas on this?

The ambush scheme might well have been applied to Jgpz IV/70. I'd consider the disc scheme, though. It's nice, and you just need a circle template to spray through.

What size template, or can you punch holes in an index card?

Any threads on a good Jagdpanzerscheme would be appreciated. I hope there were some soft-edged schemes for later versions.

The "ambush pattern" per se was not applied to Jagdpanzers. They used the factory-applied "disc pattern" and not the over-modeled ambush dots.

While we're on the topic, I'll post a picture of the vehicle I'm modeling:

It's definitely an A-0 (aluminum armored training vehicle) and has Schulungsfahrzeug on the side (the name of the Jagdpanzer training school)...but it has zimmerit too, which wasn't supposed to be applied to these vehicles. Many of them were pressed into service towards the end of the war, and were upgraded in various ways before facing actual combat. Do I smell field-applied zimm?

My German is very poor, but I think Schulungsfahrzeug translates to "school vehicle" or "schooling vehicle".

This one's a StuG, but it shows the disc pattern to good effect.

Damn, I've been so busy lately that I just now noticed this GB! 

Put me down for a 1/35 Tamiya StuG III Ausf. G complete with puppy dog mascot.    There is no way I'm missing out on another Tigerman GB.
