First off lemme say that I enjoyed watching this one come together Max. Secondly I've gotta hand it to you for not only a superb and creative build but also for the fantastic photo shots that you've presented. Really fun build to gander at.

Lastly ....a name.:hmm: Corvineum Falcon stands out.

Hmm, I'm trying to come up with a name for this to perhaps add to the graphics. You guys are more than slightly creative and might have some suggestions. My picks so far are "Asymmetric" or "Maximum Falcon". That last one has a nice ring to it. OK, your turn. Make me laugh!

Hey thanks Steve! That had been on the bench way too long. On to other projects! The Hodaka 1/1 speed attempt machine beckons for attention as does my boring and everpresent repair/painting the house project. Bah, the motorcycle is much more fun! I've been spread too thin.

Stratigically placed, super top speed on the run refueling of course

Thats what I kinda figured. Something like the vidio game "Spy Hunter" . Pull into a moving truck and 30 second's later , Ta-Da , full of fuel and back up to speed.

I think it's time to take this to the salt flats for speed trials. The twin parachutes have been installed along with their explosive deployment devices and I've fiddled with the overall paint job about all I'm going to. Time to burn some jet fuel.

This has been a really fun project in that you can do it your way or any way. No rules or historic facts to duplicate nor critics to care. It started off to be silly and cartoonish but slowly evolved into something somewhat feasable in real life. Well, maybe. It did make me say "what if" and think about the problems of real speed attempt machines that always need less frontal area and more streamlining. Lotsa power is needed to go fast and hopefully this engine combo should suffice. In real life I would't drive this thing even on a bet. First of all that jet engine in the cockpit seems like a bad idea somehow. How fast can you go on plastic tires? Lots of unknowns here. Fun to think about though.

Also, this is the cheapest model I've ever built and wins hands down for most fun per dollar. Won by my wife at a model show with five one dollar tickets. Paint, accessories, engine and tanks, decals, all in stock, leftover from other kits. Also, most laughs and entertainment from a from a model kit. 6,809 views and 155 comments on our forum. Thanks for that BTW!

I think I got my money's worth on this one!

but maybe it will be a used race car.

I love the way the nose turned out !  no headlight's = less wind resistance.

Hmm, dry mock-up. Some flaws and fit and detail things to deal with. The paint is not up to standards but maybe it will be a used race car. I think it needs some bold numbers to set this thing off. Sponsers are good as they don't just give jet fuel away in massive amounts. Getting there, not perfect but a fun concept. Looks way too dangerous to drive for me.... Soon!

I did take the Corvette out of hibernation yesterday and shot the black stripe on it. This is one that finally got too much paint on and wasn't drying properly. It had gotten to the point of starting over or leave it alone for a while. Things seem to have stabilized but it still needs the silver touched up. At least it's on the bench again. Speed trials soon, hopefully!

Thanks Gang! Back soon I keep saying. I've too many irons in the fire is the the excuse. I'm doing some serious exterior house maintenence which is eating my lunch on the Corvette and Hodaka project. July is the time Kansas turns to a heated hell which will drive me back into the laboratory soon. The Hodaka speed project is lookin' cool as the $ rise. I remember now why projects like the Corvette are fun! I still don't have $10 in it. Hopefully the vette will be done soon but the speedster will probably entertain me for a few months or even years. Hey, don't forget how long the Seaview took! Thanks for checking on me!

Maybe the paint on the Vette has finally solidified. Not the first model with too much paint! Been there. OK, reporting in. I did purchase some jet fuel. Soon!

Well, I've been watching paint dry for several days but the masking tape is still pulling up silver. I put a test strip of the equivalent of Future under the chin and let it dry for a few hours. I then put a strip of Tamiya masking tape over that. A few hours later I pulled the tape and it looks as though the Future has sealed the silver. Hard to see in the picture but it seems to be sucessful. I think I'll do a couple of coats of Future in the to-be-masked areas and re-mask them for my black stripe. Crossed fingers here!

A couple of things happening to the somewhat slow project. The interior is probably finished with enough detail as the viewing will be limited with windows and viewing angles. When sitting in the drivers seat on a sunny day, the view is plagued with reflections from the silver. An anti-reflection coating will be needed. The whole machine is asymetric with scoops and intake and I visualized an offset full length black stripe/anti-glare area running the length of the car. This first step and test on the hood didn't turn out well. The siver enamel is still soft after several days and the light footed Tamiya tape still pulled up the gloss from the enamel silver. Grrr. I've patched the areas with thin silver on a very soft wide brush. This might work until everthing sets up, if it ever does, but for now I just need to stay away from the soft paint. Nix on the stripe for now anyway. Reporting.

I do appreciate the comments Gang! The Corvette is quite the change of venue for me in that I always seem to building a replica of something with rules. I'm just taking a fun break and I'm not a very serious guy anyway. Let's see here, there could be room for an afterburner like most jet cars I have seen, but hey, they don't have a turbine up front either. I was a little disappointed after reading about the real version of this turbine engine being a stationary unit that powered some sort of pump rather than an aircraft. It really was 880HP and provided over 1100 foot pounds of torque. Facts for the day. I know, hard to separate fact from fiction on this project but I ain't lyin' on that one. Back to work here!  Geeked

The two roof panels serve as entrance/exit for the driver as the doors have been incorporated into the body. The stock Corvette panel latches are only rated to the top speed of a stock Corvette, about 200 MPH. I'll be doing almost twice that speed and a new latching system was installed. A little tight exiting from the passenger side roof hatch but it can be done in an emergency. The problem is that all the steps needed and required to release the hatch externally could take too long should you be a slow reader. Hopefully the main exit will serve it's purpose especially with the pop-up seat to the roof.  Geeked

The Testors silver enamel through the air brush looks good enough for speed runs and I did get the engine department in order. A test run on the turbine, operating at it's rated 37,500 RPM, exploded the stock 10,000 RPM Tachometer that came with the Vette, something I hadn't considered. Live and learn. The de-tuned Mig-17 ejection seat works great in it's new reusable mission of popping the seat bottom level to the top of the car for emergency exit in case of fire or other emergencies. It's all resetable and re-armed with four sequenchel firing 12 gauge magnum shotgun shells. The steering wheel just pivots to the right. Cool.

Thanks Gang, for the comments! Second thoughts here on the flat aluminum paint. This Krylon Metallics is a mainstay in the the real speed attempt motorcycle project for fab parts, but in the scaled down model Corvette is hard to get a flowing finish. I think this is a job for the airbrush and some gloss silver. There are some decals to come so I'll at least start with the gloss idea. Being a mostly composite car, the flat aluminum was too aircrafty and we don't want this thing flying nor betraying the true materials of exotic carbon fiber. Back to the paint booth!  Geeked

I suppose the seat doesn't have to be operational. It certainly fits in the theme of the project. Outrageous comes to mind. I think I'll take my chances inside the big roll cage and monster fire suppression system for now. Too bad the zero-zero seat was too big where you could leave at any speed if things went awry. Seemed like a good idea at the time. It's only a concept, again, what could go wrong?

At this point, we now know that the "Safety" equippment is just as deadly as a crash would be..... so why dont you forget about trying to save the driver ( just getting in is hazzardous. )

Go ahead and make some space ! Get rid of the rollbar and fire extinguisher's.

Ejection seat ????  Give him a comfy bucket seat and use the extra space for Nitro bottles !

( Just make "SURE" you have the driver sign a "Waiver" , before take-off ! )

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

This is sounding dangerouser and dangerouser. Since this seat is not a zero-altitude, zero speed rated seat, the chances are you would be killed are increasing despite the steering wheel being in the way. I do like the looks and comfort of the seat, but with diminishing odds of survival I may just put a motor on the seat rails to lift the driver out of the top hatch and glue the door shut for safety. Who's to know that the seat is unarmed? Let me sleep on it. Better to look good than to be practical.

Remove steering wheel, add rudder pedals?  Or an arm from the bottom of the seat to the steering shaft with a quick release for the wheel itself. Sorry Hodakamax, your idea not mine, sorry. Pretty cool to this point though.

Good news and bad. After much measuring it's apparent that the zero-zero Martin Baker ejection seat is too tall for the Vette. The good news is I did find a Mig-17 seat that is much shorter but not without many modifications. Another problem is the steering wheel and how to move it out of the way early in the ejection sequence. One solution is a forward pivot which requires destruction of the windshield. Should the vehicle survive as its chutes also deploy, you wouldn't have to buy another expensive Corvette windshield. A rapid telescoping of the steering wheel shaft would work but would have be extremely fast with an explosive drive. I think the best solution is just to have the steering assembly go with the seat. I'm workin' on it!   Geeked Seat anchored and in position shown with stock seat.

Hey Max... I see now that I missed something. I didn't realize that this was your flux unit, and that you had it behind the seat the first time. That works there too.

Yeah, not much room behind the seat is there. Maybe you could mount something to the left of the seat, facing the driver. There is a small open spot there. Lol.

Max--in the movie it is the back seat. It's that lighted gizmo behind his left shoulder. If you have some room to put it there, that is the place.

You'll want this device because terrorists are making plans to steal your high-tech vehicle. You'll probably be able to outrun them with packing that jet engine. But--if you can't, the flux capacitor can transport you and your car into another time/space. Get what I am saying here? It's an insurance policy. I am just looking out for you man.

First coat of flat aluminum. The Experimental Aircraft look. It does have two aircraft engines. Looks like it needs a bit more wet sanding but it's a start. At least it looks highly modified from the original on the box. It should also run much faster.

How big is said flux capacitor? There is some room in the nose. Antennas? Power requirements?

Hey Maxie. Since I am making a squid for you, I want you to do something for me on this build. I'd like to see you install a flux capacitor. Remember... it is what makes time travel possible.

Maybe?

Almost ready for paint here. I did mold in the right door seams as it's no longer funtional. I'm starting to dig all these scoops, ports and intakes. Imagine Saturday night cruising, without the jet engine of course although flames would be cool, so to speak. You wouldn't want to suck some poor soul into the intake. Just thinkin'....  Geeked

L O L !

By shortening the car, you "may have" altered the weight distribution a bit.

Don't worry ..... just melt down the lead in about 20 car battery's, and place the "slab" somewhere just forward of the front axle

Wind tunnel tests and computor simulations show the Corvette getting a little light at .5 mach. I have shortened the body by 12 inches and squared the rear to create a vaccuum directly behind the vehicle. This should pull air from under the car via the rear wheel wells to create downward forces and prevent lifting and help in chute deployment. A small spoiler will aid in flow and direct air coming over the top over the shortend tail. What could go wrong?

I love this thread! Super entertaining and some good model building going on for sure. Crazy how they modeled the engine after the turbo vette. Somebody wasn’t paying attention that day and decided to do just what you are doing and kit bashed the original haha

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

One reason I'm so slow on the Corvette project is I'm building two speed attempt vehicles at the same time. The 1970 vintage 1/1 Hodaka is real while the Corvette is obviously fake. I'll only be trying to break speeds of slightly over 100mph with the 100cc Hodaka but the Corvette should run well over 300mph or whatever I make up. Let's say 400mph plus. That will give us a good fake record for some experimental class. Even though the  little Hodaka is radical it still only has about 6 cubic inches of displacement. This is why I'm building the Corvette to go really fast. Follow?

Maxie

If you haven't  been there, you really need to get to Birmingham Alabama and see the Barber Motorsports Museum at Barber Motorsports Park.  It is one of the best museums I've ever been to.  They even do a vintage motorcycle racing weekend.

Neat thread. Reminded me of the STP turbine car. That was pretty cool too. I listened to the race on the radio and you could hear it clearly.

Actually the only turbine Corvette, at least in that era was built by Andy Granatelli, the  STP guy who built the turbine Indy cars. Strange that the kit was modeled after that car, at least the engine.

Kind of a bummer, me thinking I had the only turbine powered Corvette in the world. Now there are two, I find out. I did find this picture of the engine which will help in the build. Rated at 880 HP stock, and with my additional mods of pressurized air via asymetrical scoops to push more air into the turbine and engine compartment along with major exhaust modifications should pick up the pace considerably.

Do a Google search on "Turbine Corvette". Lot's of stuff will pop up. I live in the upper Gulf Coast region of Texas and during the early to mid '80s, one of our local "more money than sense" car nuts actually owned this thing. It looked like a run-of-the-mill 'vette until he cranked it. Then it was a freaking jet on wheels. You could always tell when Milton had it out on the road, you could smell the JP4 burning.

The saga and story of the Testors Lamborghini Countach shown at the beginning of this post continues. My good friend Les, bought this kit years ago and inspected it annually. Les is a busy guy and just went through a marriage and a major move with his new wife recently. Les gave me the model as a gift to build during his busy times and I too inspected it at least semi-annually. At 1/12 scale, this thing is BIG. I look, I measure the Aircraft Museum, I check the aircraft stash, and finally I just look at the Countach as Les did. Ah, Les is settled in in new surroundings, in a nice large house and shop. Today, I stopped by and presented him with the Countach yet again. The ball is in his court!-----Maxie

I might just run him with one engine so's he'll have a slim chance. The jet engine of course. lol.

The "ONLY " way I'll have a chance...... is if I "sneek" over to your pit area before the race..... and let all the air out of your tire's. ( Wont matter ..... at the finish line I'm still going to be looking at the South end of a Northbound "Vette" ! )

You are going to have to look in on LT's Slingster build.  When you both get done, going to have to run him......I'm betting on the Hemi for the first 1/8 mile after the hole shot, then neck and neck at the line, once the turbine spins up.

These twin enclosed parachute canisters mounted in the rear fenders, shown with stainless steel covers, should solve the problem of toasted parachutes. Not only is there extreme turbulence at speeds over .4 Mach, but the exposed fabric covers would most likely be incinerated by jet blast and heat. These pressurized canisters with explosive bolt pins securing the covers blast out the parachutes but only after fuel has been shut off to the jet engine. Long Nomex lines spool out, much like a spinning fishing reel, and deploy the chutes at a safe distance should the jet engine still be slobbering burning fuel which is another problem I need to work on.

Another problem solved.

OOh! Its a muscle car!  Says so right on the box.

Most times they're sports cars.

Eh, when I was in high school I drag raced my dad's 1979 280ZX 5 speed against my buddy's dad's 1978 Corvette Silver Anniversary automatic.

The 280ZX wasn't a fast car, but it was quick.  Quick enough to beat his dad's 'Vette.

Turned out the 350 in that model was the base engine and made 180HP at the crank.

Datsun put down about 165 at the rear wheels, and had the stick.

He and I were together off the line but I pulled away from him.  Once I hit third, which wasn't the best gear for that car I had a big enough lead on him I was able to hold it.

In fact California models around that time didn't even have a 350 but the smaller 305, due to emissions.

I've been checking out instrumentation for the project. A machmeter, it seems, could be cool and useful in testing. Obviously we won't be exceeding Mach one with this set-up and tires. This 1.5 Machmeter would be overkill. I like this one with both machmeter and knots. Hmm, these are still steam guages, maybe we need something more futuristic glass cockpit stuff with recording GPS speedometer and machmeter. I do like the old look but I'm having trouble finding anything in 1/24 scale. Still looking and contemplating for now------Maxie

The only issue I can foresee is the AB flames and heat are going to play hob with the paint and composite body panels........

Ha! These special highly reflective composite panels already deployed in interior hot spots will protect the critical exterior places near turbine and jet exhaust panels. This material is rated for "very hot" and should be sufficient.

Recent wind tunnel tests have shown a serious yaw to the right

Just "drag" your arm out the left side window.... that should pull her back in line.

Dont forget, regular car tire's cant handle speed's in exess of 300 MPH.

Better get some "aviation" tire's ..... off of an F -16 ..... or a B - 58 .

Recent wind tunnel tests have shown a serious yaw to the right probably from the jet engine intake which wasn't intaking at the time. Hopefully this right hand drag will be offset somewhat by the front turbine exhaust exiting to the right and the jet engine operational. I may need to have an opposite side air brake which would have direct linkage to to the jet engine throttle and be proportional to the speed. I'm on top of it. Geeked

I don't think these wimpy stock side pipes are going to allow us the full potential of the turbine. I've changed the twin exhaust manifolds into a all-for-one sewer pipe configuration that is used by the military and is constructed of Unobtainium. With our air intake mods, exhaust temperatures probably would have melted the two stock pipes into dual puddles.

I decided that I had enough air intakes and laid up a new nose made from exotic carbon fiber. Actually not so exotic Bondo fill on the one I had but who's to know? I also added a complicated fire extiguishing system just in case. One can't be too careful on the subject of safety especially with a jet engine in the cockpit. I also put in aluminum floor pans as the plastic was sagging after the first jet engine test. Reporting.

The Corvette project was to be a mindless filler while waiting on a weather window to paint the 1/1 speed attempt vintage motorcycle frame. The Corvette has been fun enough to warrant equal time share and will be finished soon. The motorcycle seemingly goes on forever. A single fuel tank for Jet A has been installed for both the turbine and jet engine. It should last long enough for a record run. The Titainium ducting has been completed to route outside air to the jet engine. Now we can have side windows which will improve streamlining greatly and make the cockpit livable. A paint test for the hood looks to be the way to go. This thing might fly yet so to speak.

Wow, after a couple of test runs on the jet engine it quickly became evident that you can't be pulling intake air out of the cockpit. Too close for comfort on that shreiking mouth. Air from underneath is not a good option as debris might get inhaled. Let's put an intake on the side which doesn't actually add any frontal area as it's hidden behind the fender on the front view. Actually jet intakes aren't much drag as they are pulling air in at high velocity at least that's what my Mom told me. Problem solved!

Being rear wheel drive it could also be used as a Drag race exhibition car.

I dont think you can use a parachute with that jet engine being at the rear like that...... You "may" want to install a couple of air brakes on that thing.

You know.... that deploy from the door's. ( drill a few hole's in them for weight reduction. )

Your build is making me think of doing "terrible" thing's to a 58 Impala and a 2010 Ferrarri.....

I'll call it,      Ferala   ...  Imparri ???

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Hmm, this jet engine thing may disqualify us for track use. Maybe this should be a land speed record machine. Turbine for wheel drive and jet for extra boost. Being rear wheel drive it could also be used as a Drag race exhibition car. Just trying to figure out which track to go to. Geeked

Ha! This jet engine fits right in there. Too radical? The intake might be a little loud for the driver who would be me. Maybe some ducting, firewalls and screens would be in order. Geeked  Thrust vectoring paddles might improve cornering, something to think about.

Hmmm. Search as I might, no reactors or flux capacitors in the spares box. I did find this small jet engine that might prove usefull. Too much? Would two engines be legal on track day? All thing to consider.

Too funny. It kinda does look like my Seaview reactor. I'd like to see Max put in a Flux Capacitor. Then he could get, "Back in Time."

PLEASE tell me that is NOT the engine that you're going to use!!! UGH!!!! It's just too damned ugly!!  Interesting project though. I haven't had any place and NOW time to do anything productive. I have been uploading pictures to picture trail so that I can get some of my work reactivated on the forum when I get ready to give everything the green light again. I know how it feels to be limited by your surroundings, and by the weather itself. I'll keep watching - this looks like it will be fun although painting will be another story. Thanks for sharing.

Ha! A little better view of the Titanium ducting installed and some body work and cutting through the hood so that these ducts really do work! I also used some Duplicolor 2 in 1 filler/primer and checked for crazing. All is well.

Bit of "Thread Drifting" In the late 60s early 70s there was a comic book called CARtoons which was quite amusing. Anyhoo one of their plots was the conversion of a WW2 US halftrack into a drag racer. Now.that would be a fun modeling project.

These asymetrical intakes will add air at two stages in the fake intercooler which should add several hundred horsepower to this strange looking engine. Maybe we can fool part of the people some of the time or something like that. Hmm, this "no rules'' concept really is fun! Geeked

Ah, back to the silly project for a few moments. The out-of-box engine looks to be totally inaccurate with a cylindrical turbine looking thing. I'll try to convert it back to a fire breathing V8 with massive asymetrical induction scoops feeding the fake intercooler. Sounds good anyway. We do want it to be fast.

The "2 the Max" speed attempt motorcycle project is bogged as it's just too cold to paint in the shop. I have another project planned through the end of February which is a month long model display at our local Public Library. I need to start figuring that out. Four cases to be filled. I'll probably do a post on what I've gotten myself into! Eek! Models should be shown I say. The wife is working on tags and display labels as we speak. The show should make a tale that I like telling along with pictures I like shooting. All fun and hopefully educational for the viewers.

I have been making lotsa Varoom! sounds while working on the Vette, lol!. Kind of a free palate there! Geeked  One needs a mindless project now and then especially when trapped in Winter.  Yikes! Only eight days left to prepare the show, I need to get to work!

Being the designated driver of this conceived device I did a little overkill on the roll cage. The diameter is a little large but it probably would be padded and wrapped in reality. I still need the pieces over the windshield which will be easier to build after the windshield is in. It looks "hell for stout" as Dad used to say.

Looks good, esp. the rears.

I'm building two cars for the Monogram Mafia 4 GB. First in a while, probably last.

One is a AMT Avanti, squillion parts, workable steering, stock, custom or salt racer parts, tires etc.Challenging, tedious. It does have pairs of holes for high or low suspension.

The other is a Monogram Lincoln Futura. Kind of like your kit, almost a toy. Maybe a dozen parts, solid metal axles. More fun.

I'm enjoying your WIP.

A fast road racer should be lowered so as not to push extra air. This looked easy and I just  drilled some holes to locate the axles above the floor pan rather than the slots underneath which would be equivalent to a 5" drop on a real car. Perfect, but then the wheels interfered with the inner wheel wells and the body itself. Dremel action, inners cut mostly out and body wheel wells radius enlarged. Check out all the fun I'm having already! This fits in with the racing motorcycle project where the motto is "Leave nothing stock" lol.

Needs an 8 track player in the dash.

Scalemates seems to have this one as an original Testors kit. It came with a Camaro and a Firebird, plus paints and glue.

Nice job, Testors has been a re-boxer of model kits for decades. Someone else makes the kits and it usually takes a little homework to see whose model kit is in a Testors box.

Since this is somewhat of a W.I.P. I'll have to show you the dull things too. Tires mounted and chassis temporarily stuck together for evaluation. This is going to be a project like someone dropped off an old worn and faded dog '80 Corvette in your yard overnight with no title as a gift. Use your imagination. A racer seems the only option except salvage. Let's give it a shot. Geeked

We all need to lighten up on this kit. It's just a light hearted filler to keep me entertained until Spring. I'll probably need everyone's input until better weather. Ok, first blood, er, paint. These cheesy chrome wheels need to be manly magnesium or better yet, jet engine exotic metal. Much better. We're underway! Ideas welcome, think brutal track Corvette.

I seem to remember doing the Corvette.  If i recall, there are not a lot of positive locating points to glue one thing to another .... just gotta "glue and hold for a minute"

The Testor's 46 Ford was "Riddled" with problems like that. The instructions tell you to glue Tab "A" into "slot" B .... but "slot" B didn't exist ! The Corvette is the same, just not as bad as the 46 was.

It's still a good kit, you just have to take your time.

Not sure, I know Testors hasn't produced a kit in A LONG time. That kit is one If I spot it at a swap meet or contest I'll probably buy it if nothing more than like you just to look at it. I will find one someday and I will build it LOL, along with the 300 other kits in my stash.

BTW Hodakas are cool old bikes, didn't they give Harley Davidson a run back when bike racing was starting? Had a standard Softail, MUCH PERFER my Honda Valkyrie today. Thank for the reply Hodamax.

I look at the Lambo annually. It's an old expensive classic a friend gave to me after he looked at it annually for years. Cool kit. Steering, lights, large, complicated or at least, extensive. Looks to be quite the project. Being an aircraft guy I haven't looked at the Tamiya cars or old Revells for that matter.

Hmm, didn't Revell buy Testors or am I dreaming? It might be the same kit(s). I dunno.

How does that Lambo look? Obviously not a 1/12 Tamiya, but will it hold its own with the big scale Monogram Revell kits?
