Howdy howdy howdy - its Woody!
Posted by Real G on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 1:03 PM

Hey all,

Woody is back on the bench.  I have a short attention span so I'm easily distracted.  Actually, I was looking over the kit and noticed something you don't see in a modern Bandai kit - a molding flaw!

It might be that the ejector pin mark on the inside of the hat had something to do with it, and combined with the weird slightly flexible styrene Bandai is now using, may have resulted in the hole and tear.

I'm not going to paint the kit (GASP), so I needed to patch the hole to match the surrounding plastic.  I used the colored sprue that the hat was molded from.

I'll need to flatten the patch a little more, then gently buff out the area.  The entire model will be flat coated afterwards.

I also wanted to improve Woody's eyes.  Bandai provides stickers for his irises, but the surface they are to mount on are slightly domed.  How those brilliant product development people over there can figure out how a stiff, flat sticker would conform to a compound curved surface is beyond me.  Anyway, I had the thought to trim down the domed inserts flat, apply the stickers, then flood the depression with CA glue.  ("There's CA glue in mah eye!!!")  It worked a treat.

I hope everyone did not have fever this Saturday night.  Stay alive.

Ahem.  I'll git mah coat...

I like it G.

There was a mold line on the mt-m6 i built by bandai. It was on a small hidden part so really not a big deal. Flaws are rare though in my experience.

Does the woody model have different mouths?  Or different faces or heads or something to get the different expressions?

Ted,

Yes, Woody has three interchangeable faces.  The eyes are hard to adjust from the outside, and they tend to either stick or go floppy.  I need to figure out a fix for that.

I'd have made it into a bullet hole.  Or stuck an arrow in it.  After all, he is a cowboy!  The way you have him posed in that first picture, it looks like he's staring in disbelief at a bullet hole in his hat.

Nice fix.  He could say "there's a hole in my hat" along with "there's a snake in my boot"

Thanks,

John

Something that took me a long time to notice was that Woody’s holster is empty!  Maybe it was a conscious design decision by Pixar in the interest of kid friendliness.

In any case, he is not equipped to deal with bandits, injuns or rattlesnakes.

That’s why he has backup.

Greg,

I apologize for sending you back to the Disco Inferno.  I myself was almost a little too young to disco, but old enough to remember that silly era.

But who am I to criticize, as I spent my youth on equally silly designer jeans and Members Only jackets.

To be honest, I sort of liked disco. It was catchy. And unlike rap and hip-hop, it had the common decency to ride into the horizon when it's time was over.

Oh, and I miss my Member's Only jacket, odd you'd mention that.

Woody can now keep an eye on things.

The eye has to be polished for that creepy, lifelike feel.  Watch out Syd, the toys are watching.  Alllllways watching.

Greg - Certainly not FINEscale modeling; more like FUNscale modeling!  I need more fun versus fine in my life.

Gamera - OK you troublemaker, now I gotta make an eye patch!

The CA glue set weird in the other eye and as a result I have to find another way to infill the irises.  Maybe I used a cheapo knockoff CA brand.  Zap-A-Gap never shrank and collapsed on me.

Now the sheriff can keep BOTH eyes on the bad guys!

They are a nice improvement, I think.

The second eye got filled in with that UV curing resin kit from those "As Seen on TV" ads, since I was having severe problems with slow curing CA that developed strange crinkles and bubbles that collapsed.  I ruined a pair of eyes that way.  The UV resin works a treat, sands easily, and really does cure in seconds.  A cousin of mine is a dentist, and he gave me a professional grade UV light used in dental work, which has more UV "horsepower".  I'll try it out on all the rest of the eyes.

I sure do!  He'll come in to help with the space/sci-fi builds.  Coincidentally, I was looking over Buzz's parts last night to see what needed doing.  An LED laser will NOT be fitted, as the arm is too small to accomodate a battery.  He will get the "starry eyes" modification though.

SPACE RANGER peepers!  To keep an ever vigilant watch for Zurg and and the Ko-Dan armada... Oh wrong space army.  My bad.  I’d better verify what enemy force we are supposed to be looking out for with Star Command.

This is fun! Sometime you need to build something like this - something that just makes you smile.
