Gamera

They look perfect from here Bakster!!! Yes

I think dust on the inner surfaces sounds just fine. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Hey thanks, Gam.

Thanks too for your opinion. That is how I will go with it. I will give it a final sealer and call the assembly done.

For what it's worth I paint 'stucco' paint all over the inner wheels and hull bottom of most my tank models and then spray them a muddy/dirty tan/brown.

Though now I'm imaging a very angry Major West forcing Dr. Smith to detail the underside of the Chariot with an old toothbrush as punishment after the doctors latest outrage....

Thanks for the tip. I am gonna stop before I go too far! Lol.

That's funny because it's West that is driving like a bat out of hell. Clouds of dust billowing up like the Chariot is on fire!

He's pissed at Smith and in a big hurry. He wants to get back to the Jupiter before he loses it. He's about to wring Smiths delicate neck.

But he will probably make Smith do as you say, clean it with an old toothbrush. After all, it's Smiths fault for pissing him off. Hehe.

On this sad day in American history.

Before I can close the transmission assembly I must sort out additional wiring. Specifically, the exterior lighting. In order to do that, I had to mount some of the light fixtures.

Not shown in an image, I epoxied the light engines flat to the pan. I need them flat or they create too much tension within the transmission cover. There is more wiring work to do though before the cover can go on.

Thoughts and prayers to DJT, his family, and to the spectators injured or killed today.

On this sad day in American history.

A new day has dawned despite the darkness of yesterday.  And, it's Bastille Day, so cast aside your cullottes and shoot off fireworks in rememberance that we in the commonweal are greater than the nuts and the crazies.

Also, stay inside, saw where it was 80°F in Duluth, y'all like to melt in that sort of heat.

Yeah, decided to work at the bench where it is cool.

Speaking of... I worked on this rats nest of wiring near five hours. Some of the time spent fishing wires between the floor and the pan. Impatience caused me to not entirely plan wire routing. I am darn lucky I was able to fish it through after the fact. It wasn't easy though. This stage could have easily killed the project. Mainly, it was wiring that goes to the floodlights at the top of the canopy. They won't be easy to deal with when I get there.

The other issue I had was poor connections. I like magnet wire but you need to remove its varnish well or you can end up wih intermittents, or, no power at all. That issue had me going in circles for a few hours. Best way to remove the varnish is with a lighter. You burn it off. But...it leaves a residue you need to scrape. I usually use a small torch for this and usually I don't have a residue issue. But because the wires were so close to the model, I had to use a lighter. It was pretty darn frustrating. It's a minor miracle I didn't short something out in all this. There'd be no fixing it at this point if I did.

Anyhow, by God's grace, I got it to work.

Now that the rats nest is done, I was able to test-fit the drivetrain cover. It fit very well; no more tension. I will recheck the wiring for good measure, then, epoxy the cover in place. Once I do that, no going back either. So, getting the cover attached is my next immediate goal.

Looks good Bakster. Glad that's out of the way.

As you say I'm crossing my fingers nothing goes wrong since you can't get the model open again...

Main power wires added, all connections tested, and the transmission cover secured using JB Weld 24 hour epoxy.

Aside from a good bond, this epoxy has an added benefit. I found that I am able to remove smudges or excess without it damaging the paint. Of course, this is only true while it is in its soft state. I should also note that the paint is sealed in a clear.

Where from here? I may have a surprise change in direction. You shall find out in a weeks time.

End.

She's lookin' good Bakster! You're making real progress now.

Curious about your change of direction, so does the Jupiter II make a surpise visit to 'The Planet of the Apes' (aka far future Earth)?

Yeah man. Beginning to see a light at the end of this tunnel. Still much work to do but getting there.

And you crack me up man. Them Apes are troublesome. Did you see Cornelious and Zaius spying over my build a few images back? I don't know what, but they are up to something.

Captain that's hilarious!!!

I can see the Chariot driving up to the remains of the Statue of Liberty now. Doctor Smith climbs off staring at Lady Liberty's shattered vistage, falls to his knees and screams 'YOU BLEW IT UP! YOU BLEW IT ALL UP! ####### YOU TO ALL TO ####!!!!!'

Bakster: Yeah, the Cornelious and Doctor Zaius figures are what led me to think of POTA as being the Jupe's next stop.

All caught up now.  The groundwork and tracks look awesome and congrats on getting the wiring all sorted out.  Someday I'll try lighting a model.  Your's come looking out amazing and I greatly appreciate the detail you go into regarding the methods used.  Great reference material for when I'm finally ready to pull the trigger.

All of that topped off with a mystery reveal next week.  The anticipation! Big Smile

Hey thanks for all that, PG. Glad you made it through.

The mystery revelation is a few days off yet. I have some testing to go through. This could be a disaster if it goes sideways. But, so far, so good. My update should be by the end of the week. Nothing fancy like what Gamera and Capn are floating. Tongue Tied But for the record, I like their ideas! None the less, what's coming is a considerable amount of work and I feel the risk is worth it.

More to come.

If you follow this build you may recall my indecision on what body color to go with.  Screen captures from both the TV series and 1:1 replica provides an incredible amount of color variation. In many images they look gray, in a very few it looks aluminum. I went with gray. Since that day and with more time to reflect on the issue, I have come to rethink it. Really, at this point, it is neither here nor there.

It boils down to this: I really like aluminum for this build. And that is where we are today. The question then became, can I change it? The answer was yes… but with great risk. If any sort of ugliness arises during the respray, it could tank the project.  At this point, stripping paint is not an option. With that said, I jumped in feet first and hoped for the best.

Below: Mask.  Mask. Mask. There are portions within the tub that are painted gray and to have a new body color make sense—I’d need to correct that too. Thus—lots of masking.

  1. Body is painted with Alclad Aluminum.
  2. I hate applying clears to metal colors, chromes, etc. because of how they alter the effect. But—there is too much handling to come and all likelihood the paint will not survive intact. That would make things worse.  I tested three different clears for this. They are Alclad Aqua Gloss, MRP Clear Gloss, and lastly, what was an afterthought, Testors Glosscote. Of the three I was surprised to find Testors won the challenge. It altered the sheen the least while adding a deeper and richer color. Between the other two—MRP was next best and Aqua Gloss last.  I find it ironic the brand that is made for their paint came in last. The main issue here is how light refracts through the clear. In the case of the latter two, and mostly at oblique angles, the color looks diminished, milky, and flat. That is a no joy. So—Testors it was, and I used MR Color Leveling Thinner to thin it.  The clear sprayed like a dream using that thinner.

Below: Notice the grill.  I found some images from the TV series where it appears black. There is another grill sort of thing directly below it and in those same images, they remain orange. I may apply a wash at some point to give it a little more interest. But to the one above—I used Alclad Magnesium. I wanted something a little different than just black. I like how it turned out.

So—no disasters and I got what I wanted.

What is next? It is time to install my homemade decals. Fingers crossed.

And that looks sharp as well as a spot-on.

Was on the Monster in Motion site and saw this:

Made me go "Hmmm"  Now, also, fourty bux, too, so, maybe not.

It's a dangerous site to wandering about within, though.

Sounds good, Gam.

Btw. All that Zaius has to say about it is, "the man is a pestilence."

Hey Capn, thanks for that.

That looks like a decent sculpture. It could be a fun one to paint. Maybe we can get PG or Gamera to do it. Yes

Monsters and Motion has cool things for sure. I have a love hate for the place. That is where I bought my first Icarus from. Remember the wart thing? And that was just the beginning of issues. Lol. Tongue Tied

Very cool figure Capt!

Sure, I'd be happy to paint him if you decide to go that way Bakster. I mean Judy or Penny would be more fun to paint but I'd give Smith a go....

Jeez Louise. It is several more days of not being able to access the forum. Stick a fork in me, I am about done. I may be moving my build to another website. I will advise on that.

Decals applied.

Yeah four, five days of 504 Timeout errors is more than a passing pain.

I've heard abut other fora having issues on bandwidth and slowdowns, but Kalmbach has been way "ahead of the curve" on this.

The Chariot looks good though.
