It's not the greatest, but it was fun to build. Wink [;)] It's made from the Polar Lights kit.

Great looking USS Constellation! That Doomsday Machine is hard on starships. By the way welcome to the forum.

looking good for a Yorktown Class starship so how did you do the damage effect.
(BTW the Constellation is a Yorktown Class Heavy Cruiser easily mistaken for a Constitution Class Heavy Cruiser.)

Thanks for the kind words and warm welcome!

This was part of a group build over at the PCModeler website. I kept a pretty good record of how I made this with pictures, and discriptions as I went .

Here's the link if you're interested:
http://www.pcmodeler.com/modules.php?set_albumName=12Rogues&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

There's more in my photo album (click the "web site" link at the bottom of this post.)

The final weathering is alot darker than I wanted, but an improvement from what it was. Like I said, it was fun and I learned a few things along the way.

I originally wanted to make a wall mounted display using the mouth of a 5 gal bucket, covered in sculpting mesh and paper mache', with a lit up center using x-mas lights and some transluscent colored pastic film or gels, but...I had a heck of a time with the kit. Smile [:)]

Thanks Grandpa! The Doomsday Machine was always my favorite episode since I was a kid.

Thanks again for the nice reception!

There are close up pictures?!? Wow...All I had to go by was the usual screen grabs from the DVD that are floating around the net. I would be interested in the close up if you have a copy.

If so please e-mail it to me!

Thanks again,

Thanks Paul!

My second favorite episode is the one with the AirForce jet that sees the Enterprise in a very low orbit. It was on this past weekend.

Something about seeing the Enterprise in the sky makes that one stand out.

the Doomsday Machine episode of Star Trek is on right now and looking at the closeup pic they have. you have the nacel ends wrong the right nacel should be damaged right up to the pylon and the left sould have more structure forward (remains of Bussard scoop more likely) refer to the Picture that Midnight prowler has in his post to see what I mean.

Hi Mike,

The reference pictures of the 1017 I had weren't too great, so I'm sure I got alot wrong. I was basicly trying for "close" as opposed to a full on prop replica. The kit I used (PL 1/1000th kit)is actually too accurate to make an accurate 1017 replica because the screen used model was an inaccurate (AMT) kit . So being a more accurate kit in fact makes it less accurate off the bat. (wow)
I tried for an updated version. Kind of a "Constellation 2004" thing. I didn't paint it white,or mess with the b/c deck but went for a greyish tone like the Enterprise, and I added the rust ring & some grid lines as seen on the Smithsonian Enterprise pictures on the IDIC page. It's more of a Constellation/Enterprise hybrid Big Smile [:D]

Here are the ref pictures I had to go by:

Here are a few other pictures at different angles while it was under construction:

and 1 more of the finished model from a different angle showing the nacelle damage close to the pylon:

The fine bits are hard to see in the reference pictures, and I toyed with the idea of adding some more detail up front on the nacelles, mainly of some damaged fan blades and ruptured tanks and such, but never got around to it.

I still have a few more PL kits, so maybe I will do another in the future Cool [8D]

actually you are right that they used a not so accurate Enterprise kit as the screen model of the Constellation but you got to wonder why a Yorktown class vessel is exactly the same as a Constitution class vessel and the saucer damage is dead on but I cant figure out why the right side warp pylon is skewed down on the screen model while the left pylon is straight on and its nothing you did but if you look at the Re-fit Enterprise the pylons are completely staight (wierd man!) oh and by the way I have the reissued TOS Enterprise.

Brian, for what it's worth, I think it's perfect the way it is. We all tend to see things differently and modeling is one of the arts. So I like your starship! Of course now I'm comparing your skill to mine and mine is found wanting!! Great job!

13b20,

Thanks man!
Overall I'm satisfied with how it came out, but theres always that voice inside that keeps asking "are you sure you're done? What if..."

So I guess I'm done, but always open to suggestions. :)

Great job making the model. The Connie has always been my favorite ship. The Doomsday Machine story and the Connie always reminded me of the kid story of The Little Engine That Could. Nice looking rendition of the Connie you have there! :D

Hi Matthew9
Same here! In fact, It's one of the main reasons they take me so long. Big Smile [:D] I sometimes put projects off to the side for a looong time waiting for some fresh inspiration to hit me. I usually don't finish a kit in a week or two. This one I started back in mid November. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanks Roosterfish!
I like your version too! It has alot of the things I was thinking of doing with this one. The Nacelle domes and the weathering are done very well!
I just always liked partially destroyed ships over the brand spankin' new look. Nothing like a ship wreck to set the imagination to warp speed. The Constellation was always on top of that list. Next I think is the 1701 refit then the 1701-D crash scene, then maybe the 1701-C. Great stuff! Thumbs Up [tup]

What i'd like to know, is where did you get the info that the Constellation is a Yorktown Class ship? To the best of my knowledge, both the Yorktown and the Constellation are sister ships to the Enterprise, and Constitution class ships.

Not to start any type of argument but I have spent the last hour going through websites about classes of ships. So far I have found that the USS Constellation is a Constitution Class starship. You can refer to the STAR TREK ENCYLOPEDIA, WWW.STARTREK.COM, the link: http://www.memory-alpha.org/en/index.php/Image:Whispers_List.jpg, and the Star Fleet Museum. Now I have noticed that in the museum, they talk about these diffent classes of starships that is not mentioned in the official Star Trek website or encylodeia or even in the episodes. USS Constellation, 1701, is a Constitution Class starship according to Roddenbury. Everyone needs to remember that as more and more Star Trek fans appear, the designers have been introducing different classes of Star Ship to keep the interest and stories going. This is a little of topic but I am surprised that if Star Fleet is made up of different species of the Federation of Planets then how come all Star Fleet vessels are American/Earth titles? Gets ya thinking huh???

Brian, as far as your model, What a great job!!! The damage looks awesome. Kind of reminds me of Toy Story where the kid next door does surgery and mixes up parts from other toys and creates new mutated toys. Awesome work!!!!

Thanks Snoopy!

I agree about the Constellation being a Constitution class. I believe when the Constellation first appeared on screen, it was meant to be the same class as the Enterprise. After the fan frenzy started to realize that the model used as the Constellation was different in appearance (due to it being an off the shelf AMT kit) the fans tried to explain it off as a different class. I always thought there were 12 Constitution class starships who's names appeared on the decalsheet of the AMT kit.
It doesn't bother me thet fans and authors started referring to it as another seperate class. I even made up a myth of my own to explain the diferences in the 2 models. I say they are both Constitution class ships, only the Enterprise (being the fleet flagship) went through refits and upgrades first, while the others of the same class had begun, but not necessarily finished their upgrades when they were called to service. That explains the b/c deck differences & the nacell tail end caps .
Hey why not ;)

Brian, I'm with you on that explanation of the detail diffrences between the ships, it also would make sense to say theat the Constellation was built before Enterprise, as the nubering on her hull would indicate, NCC-1017, verses NCC-1701 and so on.
