Glencoe BB3 Oregon Build

You are already posting, so next up is to get pictures posted. Go to "Community Assistance aka forum help" on the home page and do a search for "posting pictures". It's a common question for the newbies. Not too difficult. You need to set up an account on a photosharing site. most of the folks use "photobucket". It's free, and easy to use. Then follow the advice on our forum. Gets to be a snap to do.

That's a classic kit. I would recommend you hang out in "Ships". Nice people.

I plan on doing the Oregon sometime in the near future. so I will be following your posts. I plan on doing pre-Spanish American War era. What era will you be doing, and what happened to the photo?

Gregg, if that's Couumbia County in Oregon (St. Helens?), you should know that the Oregon's foremast is preserved, on display at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland, right opposite where the sternwheeler Portland is moored. A memorial to a gallant warrior that came to a sad end.

  I completed the Glencoe BB-3 several years ago, and it came out pretty decent. I used the blueprints I got from The Oregon Historical Society for some details, but the biggest and best reference I had was a copy of an old "Scale Model Warships" (Vol. 1, No. 2 of summer 1985). The man had scratchbuilt  OREGON in an unspecified scale, and the article contains many B/W and color photos, plus a short construction narrative. He indicates that the model is on permanent display at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria (as of 1985).

  I'd like to get another BB-3 kit and try again, using some of the advanced techniques I've learned over the years. Hopefully, Tom's Modelworks is still offering the P/E set for the Glencoe kit.

Beautiful job!  I built the Glencoe Oregon and got an Honorable Mention from the Nautical Research Guild for a contest they had at the Washington Navy Yard O so many years ago.  I gave the ship to a friend whose great  grandfather served on the Oregon but I still have the trophy.  I loved the model as my avatar gives evidence to. I just got my shipment of my Trumpeter 1:200 Arizona and in a word, AWESOME!!  For openers, it's giHUGEic and its 900 plus parts will be a pleasure to spend this winter mating to each other.  I plan to build her as she looked in 1941 (Big surprise!) but rigged for Radio Control with seperate throttles and operable turrets and sound effects.  This is going to be fun!  Who said Christmas cannot come on All Saints' Day!

On a personal note:  It is with no small sense of pride that I announce the promotion of my brother John Richardson to the rank of Vice Admiral and VADM Richardson assumes command of US Naval Submarine Forces effective Friday, November 5, 2010.  "Attention on deck! Submarine forces arriving!"

Where did you get the crew figures?  Were they Z scale railroad figures?

I do live in Columbia County.  Scappoose is 8 miles up river from St. Helens.  We became somewhat famous for a NFL quarterback named "Derrick Anderson" and Playmate of the Year 2007 or 8 "Sara something".  Don't remember her last name.  The mast is still on the water front.  I've also read of a smoke stack park further up river that has both smoke stacks.  Don't know if thats true yet.

Toms had the PE as of June anyway.  That's were I bought mine.

I think you might have missunderstood.  The photos your looking at are from another gentleman.  I've listed his web site build earlier.  Didn't want anyone to think this was all my ideas.  Having not built a model in years I went looking for some help.  A friend thinks I'm doing a job that is worthy of posting.  If mine comes close to Marcos I'll be pretty happy.

On your personal note: I'd be proud as well.  Have you been able to tour or ride a sub?  My brothers step son spent his time on a boomer monitoring the reactor but he didn't do anything to get anyone a tour.  However My grandfather who died in '89 had a grand tour of the "Graf Spee" during the prohibition.  He was even served a beer while given the tour.  His neighbor was german and the Graf Spee was in Seattle so the two went to see it.  Just so happend that the officer of the day was from the same town as grampa so he gave them the tour.  Grampa said they saw everything.  Captains quarters to engine room.

 The white pieces are the changes I've made.  The whole mid deck was removed and replaced as well as the bridge deck.

 The hull lost the bull nose edge it had by the time I was able to achieve a decent joint between the deck and the hull.  I added it back with a half round I found at the hobby store.

I'm still working on getting the super structure to fit well with the deck.  Might just remove the bull nose there as well and replace it.

Not sure whats going on but I've had way to much trouble getting pictures to come up.  Here's one of the superstructure that I've cut up.  The white parts are ones I've made or changed.

If one picture works maybe the others will.  I'm pretty much done with the PE parts I'm going to do.  Just cleaning up other parts before I paint.  I'd also like to get a coat of pain on the superstructure.

I've actually never done PE before.  This is my first.  Looked a bit daunting to me but I think it came out pretty good.  The center walk bridge has steps that I made from two sets. Needed 11 steps and the the PE doesn't come with that.  The Bridge and mast I'm pretty proud of. 

Since my pictures are now showing up I'll start posting more.  Honestly, I don't know why pics weren't showing up!

Just post the image code from Photobucket in your post and your images will show up after you submit them. Much easier than using the Insert Media utility and much cleaner. They wont however show up in the preview of your post but rest assured when you submit it they will be there. Also, once they are in your photobucket account, if you move them around or "organize" them, any previous links to the photos will no longer function. HTH!

 The build is looking good. The scratch work and PE really look super!
