This last year I've been on a bit of a roll over polar exploration ships.

I've got two- the Heller Porquois Pas? in 1/100 and the Airfix Discovery in 1/144.

Chalk it off to looking in the corners of caves, but I had never heard of either of these models until I started focusing on this topic. Maybe there's more when one looks into certain niches...?

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I also found the 1/96 Alanger kits of the Russian Goto Predestinatcya and the Oriel.  Granted, they are not the best detailed kits, but they are large enough to be detailed.  They can periodically be found on eBay since Alanger is defunct.

Finn,

I did forget the Zvezda kits although I did just finish the Revell incarnation of the Hanse Kogge.  I am building the Thomas as a separate project at this time.  The biggest issue with Zvezda in my opinion, is that they tend to be overpriced.

Bill,

I have looked at the Alanger Goto Predestinacia and wouldn't mind tackling it if I can find one at a decent price or decent shipping charge.  I did find this thread on one the European forums and the builder ended up not only using wood on the decks but also on the sides when the thread finally petered out.  He complained about the details and fit.  I wish I could find more information on the model on the Internet.

Docidle,

I bought mine on eBay for $35.00 for the pair.  Since then, I have seen beautiful builds.

How about something along these lines in plastic at 1:96 (would equal around 28" I think):

I'm still daydreaming.

I hav the Alanger Oriel kit and was dissapointed with the ratlines. They are molded in vinyl so there hard to paint ( the paint never seems to dry ) and they pull the masts out of  alignment so be prepaired to weave your own. other than that the kit was great straight from the box.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

The Vasa in 1/96th scale. That would be nice......And so colourful!

Revell could make a great job of it in this scale, particularly with all the carved work.

Justifying the cost of tooling up a highly detailed kit in this scale is another matter, because it would only appeal to a limited market, the same as many of the suggested subjects in earlier posts on this thread.

Their recenly released Vasa in 1/150th scale is a very nice kit but has suffered from a number of compromises, both because of the scale and many simplifications to allow for the market being aimed at. It is still good fodder for the more serious ship modeller though.

A re-pop f the Wanderer Whaler or a new 1/96th. scale C.W. Morgan would be sweet to add to the pile.

How about the Royal Sovereign or Prince?  I know that Heller was considering a 1/100 version before their financial troubles; I wish they would reconsider!
