Mikeym_us-

Do you have a reference for the Tir Firness non-skid coating on S-boote? I cannot find anything.

Ludwig, I personally do not. I only went off what another member said here, earlier in the thread.  But based off of his statement, what I had read about Tir Firness on U-Boats, and the photos I was able to dig up showing that the wood areas were quite dark from some sort of wood stain, it all made sense and I went with it.

Very nice, love the detail.  I have the same model and feeling that I need to stop my present project and knock this one out.

I finally made some near final progress on my Schnellboot today. Washes and tints applied and cleaned up...

Tomorrows plan is flat coat, drybrushing, and call this one done...

Building was easy enough... it's everything that came afterwards where the challenges started adding up...

Dang Stik, that puppy is small.  How ever did you build it, let alone cutting out the commander's initials?  My hat is off to you sir.

Well I had to make some adjustments here. While researching Hoffmans sortie from LeHavre for markings, it turns out the Cdr Hoffman lead Torpedoboote, a much larger nearly destroyer sized vessel, rather than Schnellboote. So I now have to adjust marking choices. I have decided to model S-188, a boat of the 4th Flotilla, since I like their stalking panther unit marking. I know s-188 did see some action based upon this photo of her with battle damage after returning to port from a sortie on the night of June 7/8. (Mike, I can also see the darkened Tir Firness wood decks in this photo)

anyways, S-188 would be lost on June 14, along with many other Kriegsmarine vessels during a heavy RAF daylight raid on La Havre to neutralize the problem.

Today I airbrushed on a final coat of MM Schnellboot Weiss on teh up[per hull sides and let that dry

After giving that time to dry, I then glued the upper and lower hulls together

Next up, a coat of Future, then I can begin decals, washes, etc.

No problem Stik willing to help any time. Good thing I bought both sets of Life Color Kriegsmarine paint sets since I originally got those for my 1/72 S-Boats and I do have the 1/350 Trumpeter kit now I have to get the 1/35 scale kit LOL.

Ok, now back to Tir Firness... (on my far more reliable desktop) I did a bunch of research on my U-boat builds a couple years ago, and I do recall reading about that stuff. Basicly it was a Black Pine Pitch IIRC, applied to the external wood surfaces on U-boats as a weatherproofing sealant. It would weather to a dark brown over time due to wear and the elements, from what I read. Now looking at the photos of S-Boats that makes sense more than Bronco's color guide. I was going more for a weathered teak look like on larger ships, I did not research the wood portions of S-Boat colors and was pretty much following the box painting guide (shame on me, they show a light gray hull color as opposed to Schnellboot Weiss), and the B&W photos show the wood ares to be very dark, almost indistiguishable from the dark gray painted portions. A few washes during the final weathering phases should get me a darker look. Thanks for the heads up.

The problem with the Acer was that the Navidia G-force video card was going bad and causing the Blue screen of doom problems. The only thing I backed up from the Acer was my photos which I placed on my HP Pavillion and it has a 1 Terabyte hard drive .

I lost a computer that way once - an HP.  I was typing something pretty important on it late one night when it started refusing to open up files.  I did everything I could think of, and finally called Customer Support.  (This was at about 3:00 a.m.)  The nice young lady in India told me to try several things, none of which worked.  Then she tried to sell me a new computer for $800.00 over the phone.  I eventually hung up on her, and bought a Mac.

The moral to all these horror stories: backup, backup, backup.

God I know what it is to have a computer go FUBAR the Acer computer I was using after my other computer blew up was getting the blue screen of doom which sucked. Now I have a top of the line HP Pavilion my first new computer in at least a decade.

Steve, thank you, this has been a fun build.

Mike I had a nice long reply typed out covering your post and then my tablet crapped out, dumped and lost it, pissing me off once again- dont buy an ASUS, they suck. I will address your points later on when my calm returns...

Stik The wood surfaces should be Tir firness which translates to tar varnish it is a slightly darker version of the color you used. Tir firness is used as a non-skid surface on wood decks on U-boats and S-Boats since they are exposed to water for long periods of time unlike the other ships of the Kriegsmarine. You may want to add coils of rope to the deck as those are commonly seen on deck you could probably use brown sewing thread to simulate rope.

well I got the after railings on... I used Gator Glue, which has minimal tack, so it was a bear to get these things to stay in place while it dries. I will go back tomorrow with a damp brush to remove the excess glue. Thats the ony real advantage to this stuff.

and a couple shots of how it will mostly look once its all done
