Gun colors look good.  I love your deck and want to swab it...

cuz...guns are black! The bigger guns though...should they be black???

LoL

The base platforms for the 40s should be deck color, and the side frames in earest adjacent verticle color.  Recievers on the 40s are usually verticle color; the barrles from the spring bits out are black/charcoal/gunmetal (your pick)  With "steel" flash hider cones.

Pedastal for the 20s in nearest vertical color, as are the frames for the guns.  Guns themselves are dark--balck/charcoal/gunmetal.  The magazines are a dark steel sort of color.  The gunshields are nearest vertical color, frot and back.

For the 5"/38s, you need reference photos.  Most of the barrels wer in nearest vertical color.  But, quite a few were painted in deck color on their upper surfaces.  The dividing line was typically wavy, but is sometimes straight.  You eed referece photos to kow how much of the guhouse top is painted in deck color, sometimes it stops at the radius; sometimes all te way aroud the radius.

Fermis,

I wish I'd seen this post earlier. I'm sure you're familiar with the two suppliers I'll link here for you but, just in case you'd forgotten, here they are:

Bluejacket:

http://www.bluejacketinc.com/fittings/fittings29.htm

Model Expo:

http://www.modelexpo-online.com/product.asp?ITEMNO=MS0516B

Neither outfit supplies that very realistic looking chain that ejhammer linked in his post but the chain these outfits I've linked supply can come as small as 42 lpi.

I appreciate the info. I got the big guns painted to the refs...I couldn't find any showing the smaller guns (40's)...I'll get those fixed! Wounda been easier before they were mounted to the ship!

Appreciated...I found some last night and put in an order. ModelExpo was the one I was thinking of, but couldn't remember the name...I get their catalogue from time to time...it's been a while!

I've gotten about as far as I can with this (aside from rigging...), until my order shows up.

It kinda boggles my mind that they'd include the tiniest PE details...but no rails. So, I have to wait for my order for rails and chain to show up before I can finish it. In the mean time...

I'll get there...eventually!

Has anybody ordered from Toms Modelworks? What's the usual turn around time? Been waiting almost two weeks now.

Also...is there a good guide, anywhere...that shows the antenna/rigging? I've searched and searched...I've found some usable images for attachment points on the mast, but can't find where they attach down below (regarding the lines that appear to come straight down from the cross piece)

I've ordered from Tom's several times. Somewhere around 2 weeks is about right if the set is in stock.

The lines you are referring to are flag lanyards. The will terminate near the flag locker which is a box, which should be on either side of the bridge (or rather being it), where they keep the flags and pennants. The lanyards should terminate on cleats on the railing. These cleats will obesely be too small for 1/350 scale.

While reading through this thread, I am reminded of a conversation I once had with another customer in the Silver Spring, MD Squadron Shop.  This was back in the 1970's.  We were admiring the built models they had on display in cases. He modeled armor while I modeled ships.

He stated that, "The problem with ship models is that they are like toys."

Fermis, your model is anything but a toy!  You are doing a remarkable job!

I find when I rig, that's pretty much how to do it. Except for the mast stays, The LF antenna aerials and flag lanyards change from time to time.

Great work Yes

Dude, you are doing great work on your Chevalier, seriously! The Dragon kit builds up great with some TLC and destroyers are just cool ships to begin with.

My grandfather was a plankowner aboard USS Stormes, DD-780, and was wounded when she was kamikazed at Okinawa. Stormes was a Sumner class with the rear torpedo mounts, so to build it, I'll have to kitbash the Gearing and Chevalier kits, and then saw a plug out of the middle of the hull and somehow put it back together again without messing it up. Someday I'll get there, but so far I haven't mustered the courage...

Thanks guys!

This ones ready to sail!

Got the PE rails in yesterday...got started, and finished em up today.

That stuff is a PITA to work with...ya barely touch it and it get all assouttawhack.

I managed though...I think it makes a huge difference!

Here's something dumb! I cut the flag from the "decal" sheet...soaked it...waited...waited...waited some more. It would not come free from the paper. Turns out, it's just a sticker...not a decal!

A few questions:

1) What chain did you go with?

2) Are those cannon barrels movable?

Ended up using the included PE. The stuff I ordered wasn't much smaller than the stuff I got at Michaels. Even though it said 1/350...it was not 1/350 for a Destroyer...closer to 1/144, I'd say.

The turrets can be moved, they're a nice, tight, pressure fit. I did put a tiny spot of CA on the upper turret gun, that one is loose and the barrels just pointed down, right at the other turret. The other two hold whatever position you put them in.
