A Great Day for my son
Posted by stikpusher on Saturday, August 31, 2013 5:44 PM

I took a few weeks off of work for my annual vacation. No funds to really go anywhere for my family, but we did have a project together- helping our son with his Eagle Scout project for Boy Scouts. After getting approval from Council in early July, he spent that month and the first week of this month fundraising, mostly recycling, which netted him a substantial sum, but also some donations of materials needed (lumber, paint & fittings hardware) from stores. The project was to build some new benches for a courtyard area in his high school and since there were a couple garbage can holders there with decorative wooden planks looking kind of shabby, he did those as well. We spent the last week and half  cutting, sanding,  painting them all in the school colors (as directed by the school principal), and assembling these 12 benches and the can holder planks. This morning we installed them all and they look great. The work project is done! Now all he has to do is complete all the administrative side of the project for it to be submitted to the Council, do his board of review, and he will have earned his Eagle Scout rank. All of his other requirements have been met already. I am very proud of him! I just wanted to share that here among my FSM friends...

Thank you one and all. I will pass on your kind words to him. After all these years involved with scouting and seeing how much each Scout who achieved this rank and honor has to put in to it, I have a ton of respect for that.

Rock on Stik!  It is good to hear when a youth takes responsibility for doing good.  All to often we see the by-product of people who don't just care....litter, graffiti, vandalism.....and when anyone actually takes the opportunity to do good it gives me hope for the future!

NH, I do agree so much. My kids are not perfect (whose are?) and I am not blind to their faults, but they have turned out very well so far. Daily I have so many negative contacts with youngsters due to my job, that I am quite happy with who they are, and most of their freinds and associates.

Eagle Scout is, as others have said, no small accomplishment indeed.

My hat is off to you both. That time was 100x more valuable to your son than a vacation would have been. Take it from a person who wishes he had his own son's childhood to do over. But it doesn't work that way.

Can't say it better than Wayne, "Good on you both".

Great accomplishment. I made it to Star scout with 5 badges, so can appreciate how much farther he's worked.

Funny thing, when I first saw the post I thought our old friend Mike V./ proudmarine dad/ greenthumb was back!

Thank you for your kind words one and all! I will pass them on to him. Yes it haas been a long path for him getting here to this point.

Greg, yes, the time spent on that project are far more satisfying than any spent visiting someplace. Especially watching all the members of our family pull together and pitch in to assist with everything.

GM, it's funny, becuase I thought of Mike when I was typing the original message up. I do recall reading one of his similar updates about his son recently.

And it even has a model related aspect. He builds models, mostly Gundam and other Anime/Sci fi related stuff and has had his eye on some new, pricey kit. I told him once he completed his Eagle project, he will have earned that kit and that I will buy it for him. Looks like it is time for dad to pay up ;-)

I first had to google "eagle scout" to actually know what you guys were exactly referring to (yeah, Austrian derp moment here... Embarrassed), but it looks like that's one hell of an accomplishment! Congratulations to you both! I love his project as well!

Cheers, Clemens

Yep, time to pay up, Dad! He earned it, and that's the important part. You should buy yourself a kit too, Stik.  span="" id="mce_marker" data-mce-type="bookmark">

ps, wonder what's up with all the non-functioning emoticons? That was supposed to be "party".

You hit the nail right on the head there Joe. There are hundreds of small accomplishments in their lives, some middle sized ones, and the occasional big ones. And of course they hav their "what ere you thinking?" moments... LOL! I like to think that he is on the right path to becoming a good man soon.

I am Impressed :

Years ago this was my goal . I made it , but , it was as foriegn to me as bricklaying .My job was to , with three other scouts  ,  acquire the materials , cost it , then build a canoe that was inspected by a local canoe and boat builder . Then we got to use it on a trip to an area that was Canoe friendly .It worked and we got our advancement ! I am so proud of your son's accomplishment . Congratulations , Young man !    Tanker - Builder        P.S. Congratulations to you too ,  Dad , Looks like you raised a winner there .

Tonite my son passed his Eagle Board of Review for the Troop level. Now he just has to pass the District Council Eagle Board of Review and he will have completed the path to Eagle Scout. Reputedly, the board that he passed tonite at Trrop level is more difficult than the board at District Council level. I am very proud of him for his efforts and achievements here.
