Great LHS in Charlotte area
Posted by BarrettDuke on Friday, April 25, 2014 1:23 PM

I was just in Charlotte, NC and found a fantastic LHS just south of the city in Rock Hill. It's called the Hobby Stop at 939 S. Anderson Road just over the border in Rock Hill, SC. The web site isn't too helpful about what they have for plastic scale modelers, but they have a great selection of models and supplies. Lots of paint selections, including large size bottles of Tamiya acrylics and bunches of MM. The plastic model aisle was crammed with all kinds of makers, models, and scales. They have a huge selection of WWII models, especially planes. I bought an AFV 1:35 scale LEFH 18 howitzer. I really wanted to get the Trumpeter 21cm Morser 18, but the box was just a little too big for carrying on the plane with my other stuff. If you're in the area, you want to visit this independent store. The owner works there every day.

It is indeed. Tojo, do you mind me asking what shops those are, just names and city? I really enjoy visiting the LHS's when I travel, especially the independents. I track those down. They're always fun to look around in. I'd love to know about some I could visit if I get out that way. Thanks.

If you ever go to South Florida, RC Hobbies at 6800 N University Dr, Fort Lauderdale is a must to visit. They have a really big selection of everything in the hobby. I wish I had a store like that here in Central Florida. My friend has been to Freetime Hobbies in Georgia and he says it's hobby heaven in that store. Angel

It's not hard to find if you mean the Hobby Stop. Go south on I-77 toward Rock Hill. Go west on Anderson. It's a little ways down on the right.

I am fortunate to live fairly close to 2 pretty good hobby shops that I drop into once in a while, both in Joliet Il.  Leisure Hours Hobbies is located near the Joliet Mall near I-55 and Rt-30 and carried a decent selection of plastic and supplies, and also some trains, lots of remote control stuff and some train and gaming stuff.  Wings and Wheels is located a bit further south on Rt-30 and has more plastic and supplies.  I know there are more in the Chicago-land area, but these are 2 I can recommend directly.

I'm heading to China in the fall with my wife and daughter. The daughter is adopting a little girl from there and wants us to go with her to bring Ella home. She is a sweetie. I think there are a few hobby shops in Beijing...Wonder how much I can bring home? Would a few dozen bottles of MR. Color be ok in a carry on? !!! Should be interesting. I don't have enough kits in the stash.

Geezer, I don't know what they might do. Passengers to the US are scrutinized more closely than to other destinations, at least that's what it seems like to me. So you can expect it to be found when they do your luggage search. Are you going to go in to an office for your visa? If so, you might want to ask, but it is likely that they will err on the side of restriction--that is if the person you talk to is willing to give you some advice.
