Posted by DURR on Friday, January 22, 2016 12:30 PM

has anyone ever had their better half help them build a model

maybe as an xtra set of hands here and there or....

(i know is is a crappy ship) but... i am building a 400th scale heller FOCH a/c carrier and because of my failing eye sight and crippling hands my wife helped me tape the waterline so i can paint it

she said she liked helping me and would help me more as i go

I would love to build a model with my wife. Or, even have her build her own and we build together. Nothing would make me happier. But, my wife has a very sensivtive nose, and she can't handle the smells that model making produces. I swear she could out sniff a drug sniffing dog! Anyway, I'm trying to get more Acrylic paints in my inventory. Maybe then she will change her mind.

I bought her a Monogram 56 T-bird that she wanted. She may or may not build it but she won't let me touch it.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

When we were redoing our basement a couple of years ago we moved our deep freeze to be under my display shelves.  We had bought part of a cow and were putting the meat in the freezer when she bumped the shelf and everything came tumbling down.  I was able to gather up all the pieces and repair a few kits, but several were thrown into the spare parts bins.

I've never built a model with her, but I did help her with a Snap Tite SR-71 several years ago.  She hasn't had much interest since.

My wifes nephew Danny, age 28, has down syndrome. He loves cars and airplanes, so we both help him with building and painting, doing the least possible so that he is the major builder. Some of the more complex models that he will display in his room Karon and I worked on together, they make dynamite gifts for special times.

So yes, she is a great help, but actually becoming quite accomplished and turning out nice work on her own. Her favorite part now is airbrushing, she just finished a Camaro done in candy apple green, Danny's favorite color. Danny and I were totally impressed with how it turned out and told her so. She took me out to dinner that night.

Note to self, find a way to do that again.

I help the wife with her business whenever I can and she returns the favor with an "extra pair of hands" when needed.  She sewed the sails for the "Scottish Maid" in my avatar, copies pics of Instrument panels from the internet and reduces them to fit what I'm working on and prints them out for me. She's aways ready to lend a hand when these old shaky hands of mine need help.  I keep saying that she's a keeper.  Guess I'm just one of the lucky ones.

Mine tried, God bless her...many years ago. We went through some pics and she picked a plane. I hit the stash and handed her the kit. She looked at it...and the instructions...looked back at it......let out a long, drawn out "mmmmm....noooooooooo". She has picked out a couple schemes for me though...when I just couldn't decide....or care!

DURR, if you've got a wife who is willing and happy to help, then let her help. If she wants to build with you, then that's even better. When two people can share a hobby and love doing it together, then THAT, my friend, is part of what marriage is all about. My wife, who has her own hobbies (quilting & scrapbooking), is wanting us to get a large craft room together so that I can build while she does her thing. And I am definitely all for that. The way we have it set up now, I have my office/hobby room/guitar room/man cave, while she has her own hobby room/girl cave. Both are too small for two people to work on a hobby at the same time. But, once we get our own house (we rent right now), we'll have that one large crafting room. But, I'm glad and thankful to the Lord that He gave me a wife who understands hobbies. Treasure that wife that you have!

I really don't mind grocery shopping at all. Another way to decompress. When she does comes along with me, she tend to make the trip longer to do. You know how women are, they have to look at something and decide if she wants it or not. Me, I grab the sh!t and get the hell out. Of course, I get to sneak in a little treat for myself like a novel or a $5 DVD at Walmart. LOL!!

I hear ya. I do some grocery shopping too....all part of being in a good partnership. I do prefer to go on my own, for the same reasons...get in, get out!

Mine is a good one...she understands that I can't stand to sit and watch tv, and have to be doing something. We'll "hang out" for a few after she gets home from work...then..."I appreciate the effort...you can go work on your models"!

SEE YA!!!!

Hi !

As the semi - retired C.E.O of MinShipCo I can say that when alive she was my BEST helper . Many models on display throught the country in Boardrooms and Museums attest to the fact I was blessed to have the time with her . When she was in Medical school she built pickup trucks for relaxation . Some pretty darned good ones too !

You know what though . I still find myself thinking of asking for her help .She's been in heaven for 20 years now . I Hope ! The second one liked the finished product but there was no interest to build . Heck of a cook though ! She's up there too , I hope !

Hmm , I wonder if they have a model shop there ? Hmmmmm . Tanker - Builder

LOL!!!

No she does many things well, some better than me, but meticulous craftsmanship is NOT one of them.

She's a very impatient person.

I agree with Devil Dawg, if your wife wants to share in the hobby, go for it! The whole lower storey of our house is one big display room/mancave and she has a section in one corner where she can do her card making and I have my modeling desk and the rest is our various collections. She has built a couple of car models, and actually came second in the ladies section in our state modeling championships a couple of years back! She also has a couple of figures she wants to make. I am one of those lucky guys whose wife is fully supportive of my hobby and I am grateful for that. I think I'll keep her! In fact, if I say I saw a new model kit, or die cast car, or something else we collect, I get in trouble if I don't bring it home!!  She also has a collection of about 80 Batmobiles, as well as collections of Terminator and Predator figures. It's funny, we talk to each other all the time when we are upstairs, but when we go downstairs together to work on our hobbies we can sit there for hours and not say a word to each other! It's great!

That's great Aussie. I keep telling my wife that I'll relocate my stash to put a table in the room for her hobbies. So far she has turned me down.

I'm like Aussie Mick - one of the lucky ones with a supportive wife.  We've built a handful of models together.  She builds as well - and does a great job.  Actually, I'm doubly blessed because my daughter and two sons also build.  We don't often get time to share my obses...I mean, hobby together, but it's fun when we do.  And they all put up with discussion about the latest kits etc.

Yup.  I have it easy.  And I know it.

My wife enjoys going to contests with me- she says she likes to see me compete, which means she wants me to build models. As if that wasn't good enough, last year she was browsing the vendor tables and spied the old 1/35 Italeri M13/40 Italian WWII tank. She said she liked it and wanted to build it. We started with cleaning up the running gear, and then due to some of those things that life throws at you we put it away. She keeps asking when we're going to get back to it, though. I'm excited to see her work her way through this!

My wife has no hobbies. Well she likes to buy shoes does that count. She likes to read. Which gives me the time to head to the bench. Absolutely no interest in my hobby. Both my kids too. My daughter built a couple when she was little. My son a few snap together. But nothing recently
