Aww, she's a cutie stik. I'm glad Leia is there for you and your family to help fill the void Chewy left in your lives.

I'm wiping away the tears as I read through this thread. I had to make the call to the mobile vet a few days ago that nobody who shares their life with a dog ever wants to make. My 13 year old lab/chow mix, Brownie, will be crossing over to the rainbow bridge this coming Friday morning. It's time, but knowing that doesn't make it any easier. He's been a great guy since he came from the shelter in 2004 and he will leave a hole in my life when he's gone.

Wayne & Gary, thank you for your kind words. It's not the timing as much as the concern and words that count. I miss my old faithful big lug of a freind, but the pain has passed and I still have plenty of happy memories and photos to keep him alive in my heart. As well as some other reminders like some glasses with teeth marks from when he was a teething pup... LOL!

We have another dog already, a Pappilon/Chihuahua mix that my youngest found and "rescued", so my need for four legged freindship is still filled. We have had Leia since she was only a few weeks old in Summer 2015, and she grew up with Chewy as he grew older. She has changed a bit since he passed, as now she realizes she is the "big dog" of the house and is on alert accordingly. It's funny to see her do her "fierce" stance when she is alerting and saying what is hers to protect now.

I just saw this stik.  I am really sorry for your loss.  I know it hurts.  I've had a few good dogs in my life and they make you a better person I believe.  They ask for little, and give so much.  Carlos, are you getting another dog someday?

Thank you Chris. We still have one more dog in the house, and she is barely a bit over a year old now. I miss the big old lug, but will always have those memories of him. And a few reminders such as a pair of glasses he chewed up a bit when he was a pup...

I am very sorry to hear this Stik. Saying goodbye to four legged companions is such a tough time. I have two and I dread the day that i'll look down and they won't be asleep on the floor next to me as i build.

Remember the good times and take comfort in the knowledge that you provided a wonderful life for him.

My thoughts are with you.

My condolences to you and your family Scott. I'll echo the sentiments that getting another dog does help.

My condolences Scott. It's never easy to lose such valuable members of your family. I saw some pictures of my little Rosie yesterday and still couldn't stop a tear or two from rolling down.

Scott, I am sorry to hear of your dog's passing. Our home is far too quiet now without his bark, tail thumping against something, or general bulldozing into any room that he wanted into....

So sorry, Scott. I send my sympathy. That's a double shock, unexpected.

Hi Stik,

I know what you are going through.  Sunday night, my 14 year of loyal Flathaired Retreiver named Bailey had a severe stroke.  I stayed with her through the night until the vet could arrive in the morning to put her to rest.

Its really hard coming home at night after work to that empty dog bed by my workbench and set of dog dishes by the back door.

Sad to hear, Stik.

Aint no words to make it any easier.

I was talking dogs with a customer, yesterday...telling her about "Junior". Not gonna lie, my eye's got pretty sweaty. We're 8 days shy of 3 years since he left.

Stik,

My sympathies for your loss.  Dogs are uniquely special in the way they interact with people.  You are not just the guy who doles out the kibble; you are part of the dog's "pack".

Stik, I just saw this post and I'm so very sorry for your loss. You have my deepest sympathies as I've lost three in three years, the last being my little Rosie on June 13th. Take some time to grieve and do get another, hopefully from a shelter as those bark angels need forever homes. I volunteer at a no-kill shelter and have two babies from there. One I adopted and one is a permanent foster due to her age.

Stick I am so sorry for your loss. I was looking at my boy this morning and thinking he will be turning 11 in March and how I need to cherish each moment with him.

You are in my prayers.

Not ashamed to say this post brought more than a couple of tears to my eyes.

My wife and I lost a beloved furry family member last year, Tino, and two years ago, Jake, and the pain is still fresh.  Our family members were cats who were found abandoned by the side of the road before they were even weaned.  They were saved by a volunteer organization, adopted by us, and brought much joy to our lives.  Letting them go was hell.

We now have two new furry members of the family, one from the shelter, where he was brought due to a hoarding situation, and the other a rescue as a kitten from a feral colony.  They are both special, just as Jake and Tino were.

I feel your pain, Stik.  We give them love, and they give it right back.  My thoughts are with you.

Dwayne

The Rainbows Bridge Poem
RainbowBridge.com
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm very sorry for your loss, Carlos. I had to let my two girls go about two years ago, it still makes me sad. But...we did get Fiona and she is a real doll.

Once again, thank you all for the kind words of empathy and support. I know it is a shared sad experience for many of us here, having seen similar threads over the years. It is really a great group of folks here to take the time to share your thoughts, words, and some very fine poems about our "best freinds".

Very sorry to hear of your loss. I haven't had a dog since I was young, but I have fond memories of the ones we had.

Stik -

I know well the sudden hurt, I send my sympathy. In my nearly 76 years I have had the absolute joy that six previous and precious dog buddies brought to my life. All thankfully lived very long lives, in good health until the end.

Spike, Max, Booger, Maggie, Lucy and Sugar ARE the best kind of loving friends and companions I could hope to have bless my life. That happy little circle dance when I came through the door, filled my heart and made homecoming all the better.

I resolved early on, that they are indeed not gone. They will be with me in my recollections of all the great times, their faces, barks and sighs of contentment permanently placed in my memory.

Ten days after we lost Maggie we got Ellie, another black lab, she loves my old Ford truck, rides to any place, steak and eggs once a week, big long walks in the field near us. You name it, she's ready.

So, whenever you do think of Dog he's still with you, he always will be.

You hit the nail on the head, Stik.  You didn't lose a "dog", you lost a member of the family.  My most heartfelt condolences on the passing of him.  My black lab is five years old.  I know that when it's his time to go, my family and I will be devastated.

I'm convinced you will see him once again.

Best wishes,

Eric
