This is supposed to be fun/relaxing...
Posted by stikpusher on Friday, October 24, 2008 8:37 PM

So, earlier today, it was going great. I did some minor assembly work and got another kit ready to be painted. While the parts set I wen to my paint area (the garage) and completed painting some sub-assemblies so that I could move on with construction on one and do adding the final fiddly bits on another. So far everything is going great. Then disaster strikes!!!Taped Shut [XX]Banged Head [banghead]Black Eye [B)] I knock the kit while moving it and cause some significant damage to it that will take some time consuming precision work to repair. Needless to say, I was not having fun or very relaxed at that point or for some time after while I figured a way out of the disaster.

Who else has had such adventures and is willing to share?Dunce [D)]

And how did you deal with it?

Bummer!  I have had those days, needing a hobby to get away from my hobby!

One experience that sticks out in my mind was while painting a 109.  I was holding it gently, then dropped it right on the carpet while the paint was wet, cracking open the wing LE seams.  Put everything away, then fixed the model.  Next time painting, I dropped it AGAIN and broke the other wing off.  It made a quick flight into the round file.  That was a long time ago before I saved parts from wrecked kits.

It happened by chance, not really.  It was in the cards.  You have now developed a new prototype.

I feel for you.  Hope you will be able to repair the damage.  Now you become a airplane body repair man.

This kit nearly made the flight to the outside block wall just  out the door and then to the round file holding area! Then I realized A.) I dont think the kit is available any longer (unless thru Evil Bay or reissue) and B.) The aftermarket are certainly not coming back as they are at least a decde or so OOP. So now its up to creative repair work. It's the landing gear that took the hit, but to repair is gonna take some creative use of brass to give it the strength needed at the break points. The kit is the Monogram 1/48 Sukhoi SU-25 Frogfoot in which I have invested just too much time...

I've had a few "incidents" in the past. Some used to really get me PO'd. Anymore I just let it go and figure "ah, heck. I can fix it, I'm a modeler".

But just a few minutes ago I was attaching a canopy that's to narrow for the area it goes onto so it has to be clamped. Had it where I wanted it when I started to gently move so I could clean up some white glue before it dried. The f$%%ing think slipped and the canopy nearly disappered into the fuse via the cockpit. I was instantly PO'd. After a few deep ones I gathered the resolve and futured the canopy. Now, it's going to get CA'd when the future dries. I win!

I too have had a few "incidents", and although I wasn't too upset my them; somehow it enfuriated others. For example-

When I was younger, I used the kitchen table as my bench. My parents had just gotten a new kitchen table, and I knew I couldn't use that anymore. But just like any All American kid would, I did it anyways! I messed up, and spilled a brand new bottle of paint! I did everything I could to clean it, but to no avail. Banged Head [banghead]

Needless to say, it was a terrible night once my father got home from workSigh [sigh]

Warmest regards,

Roger

Well Heck Carlos! There's your trouble! Lousy Cold War tech!

I've heard Daywalker's story before and it ranks right up there for hilarious frustration.Laugh [(-D]

As for me, a couple months ago I dropped a freshly primed SBD after tripping over my dog. The thing hit the concrete in such a way as to make one LG look like it went through a woodchipper!

After killing my dog........j/k.........a friend here sent me a replacement. (Thanks again Aaron!)

Well I have now reapired the nose gear, but will have to add some brass strip reinforcement to make sure it will bear the weight. Oh what a pain... but in another few days or so, all the fiddly bits will be on and it will be completed...

This one is almost at the IP...

I'm waiting till I'm calm, well rested, and relaxed before applying the final reinforcements to the nose gear then adding the fiddly bits that were delayed by this incident...Whistling [:-^]

Brass reinforcements added this afternoon... now I'm back where I was at last week...

I must say that brass and super glue come in handy for fixing stuff...

Here is some of the repair work. The nose wheel had broken off where the forks joined the strut. After I glued the forks back in place, I trimmed some sheet brass to fit in the channel between the raised edges and superglued it in place for reinforcement. One strip per outer side. My camera is acting up and only this image came out.

I am gonna prime it now, and paint and weather it later.

If you have not dropped an almost completed model.

You have not almost completed a model.

I've "gravity tested" a few myself.  Gravity usually wins.  And then the fun of trying to find all of the pieces.

Stikpusher, could you please be so kind as to remove that animated avatar/signature - it is most distracting and annoying to have that "thing" skipping across my monitor. Maybe it's causing you some kind of subliminal stress too...Sigh [sigh]
