Uh-oh... The building and the base are not at angles to the base, Manny... Wink [;)]

Manny, I would have said the same thing, but now looking at it, I can see where I would have done something very similar too--the focal point is really the wagon, and that should be skewed--not necessarily so the peripheral elements......good show!

It really is coming together nicely!

I think that the building and pump being flush with the ouside edges adds to the feeling of the enclosed environment in a courtyard. Its the right choice in this instance.

Coming along well Manny!

I noticed the ol' "fish-eye lense" effect. Lighting placement screws up the perspective, too. But it was an off-the-cuff pic anyway.

Thumbs Up [tup]

Looks great. Couple of questions, if you don't mind:

1) What mixture of celluclay/water/glue are you using? Offhand, doesn't have to be exact.

2) Are you pre-colouring it, and if so, which colour did you go with here.

3) Is there a top layer of colour?

4) What did you sprinkle it with for the texture?

5) Overall, what depth is the celluclay at?

Thanks man!

Thanks man!

1) What mixture of celluclay/water/glue are you using? Offhand, doesn't have to be exact.

I use about a third of a standard bottle of Elmer's Glue for this sized base--A LOT...the celluclay is very thick when I mix it---imagine very thick oatmeal...you should have to spoon it on and flatten it with a spatula...

2) Are you pre-colouring it, and if so, which colour did you go with here.

I usually do pre-color with cheap artists acrylics...in this case I used a dark khaki color...

3) Is there a top layer of colour?

What I put on top is actual earth (rocks, grass, etc...)...I have a choice of different colored "dirt" I have collected over the years...I keep them in lab specimen cups, and when I am ready to use them put them in an old pepper shaker and sprinkle it onto the still wet celluclay...the clay will "grab" the dirt and when it dries it will be part of the top layer...this shaking has to be done in stages and requires several layers...atthe end of the drying I simply brush off the dirt that didn't dry into the base...

4) What did you sprinkle it with for the texture?

See above.

5) Overall, what depth is the celluclay at?

Depends on the base I am trying to achieve...in this case it was pretty deep because of the re-bar and the "elevated" building and water pump...about 1/2 inch...keep in mind that celleclay likes to draw, curl and shrink...that's why I use so much glue--it helps minimize this...

Thanks for the replies Manny. You got me itching to try your 'rebar' technique now. Got some time in January comming up to finally sit down at a bench, so we'll see if I can play around with it. By the sounds of it, you have used far more glue than I do, and I was not aware that it would help the shrinking and curling issue.

Thanks again!

Dupes, page 11 has the finished wagon with hay and page 12 has a shot of the initial groundwork...I will finish this over the Holiday weekend and have pics by Sunday night...

Yeah, yeah, yeah...I guess I deserve some ribbing...guess too much turkey got in the way...

But, the good news is that everything IS DONE except for the now infamous leaking barrel...I bought some stuff over the weekend from Hobby Lobby that will hopefully make it look more real...so, keep patient; I don't want to finish it before I am satisfied with the results...thanks for staying with me on this one...

So, I wonder if you take this much time and give so much attention to detail in all things that interest you....

I'm sure there's plenty of people that want to see more pics. You said you were snagged up but please! I wanna see some pics!

Well, she's finally done...sorry I let this one drag out so long...thanks for hanging in there with me...hope you enjoy it...

First, some periods photos that helped inspire me in creating the scene that was repeated so many times in Western Europe in '43-'45 for the Americans...sure, armor was glamorous, but it was infantry that held the ground and had to conduct the lion's share of small unit actions:

"Death in the Courtyard":

PS: I am having fits w/ Photobucket today; less than a quarter of the pics I have of this dio are coming up properly sized so check back in in a few days for more pics...most of the better pics are not yet up...

All comments welcomed...

Worth the wait there Manny!  Pics are a wee bit small but I am sure your on it!

All the work in what seems a relatively simple dio. The details, the groundwork , the faces all really giving the feel that you could be looking at the real thing sharing in the moment. Awesome stuff!  Got my boy looking as well!

Beautiful Manny!

I love the final placement of all the elements.  You have really captured a tense moment here.  Kudos to you!

Congrats on the nice finish, Manny.

The leaking water feature certainly adds to the notion that events are happening as we watch.
