Excellent detail work Rob. You really get a feel for how tight and claustrophobic that tail gunner must have felt.

Thanks Melgyver.......The tail wheel was scratch built from brass.  Turned a couple of parts on the lathe to fit correctly.

Not much progress. The waist gunners stations are complete less gun pivots. Maybe tomorrow. I did start the radio room and raised floor around the ball turret and after that is in place, I'll scratch the ball turret.

Hey Jeremy........If you can wave your hand like a Jedi and fix my nerve damage before the 18th, I'll make it.  The drive would be too hard and painful.  I'm having a hard time getting up and down my stairs to my work shop know. My surgery is on the 20th.  I wish the contest was the following weekend.  I would definitely go.

Have fun.  Let us know what you win.  Say hi to all those HOT women.

Hey... I appreciate it, but it's sitting in moving object for more than 15 minutes kills me.  I'd need lots of meds and I'd be falling asleep at the contest.  I want to go, I really do, but my body doesn't.  Hopefully, this time next week, I'll be pain free.

Thanks again.

Thanks guys.  It's been 2 long years dealing with this nerve pain caused by a previous surgery that removed cancer and 1/2 of my left kidney.  I'll be so happy when this is over.  Big Smile [:D]

Fermis....I'm sure you'll do well.  I've seen your art, and it's 1st class.

Cheers

Awesome looking build Lancair. I have the 1/48th Monogram kit too which has one fuselage side transparent. I've bookmarked this thread so I can come back and use your build for reference :)

I got the Monogram version because it included some good internal detail and the crew but was bummed to find that not all the crew are supplied, there are a few missing. So for me to build the fortress in-flight I'll need to source some extra gunners from somewhere.

You live and learn I guess.

Rob, you're doing some great work and providing me with some additional detail ideas. As far as those waist guns go I would strongly recommend you look at the Aires Browning 50s, very nice detail sets and a huge improvement over the kit guns.

Funny you would mention that.  I was just searching the Internet for Aires products distributor in the US.  I would love to get those guns and also some afterburner cans for a 1/48 B-58 Hustler they make.  Do you know of a distributor?

Thanks

The Aires sets are usually availible from Great Models. I think that Mike West at Lone Star is working on some B-58 details that may be ready soon.

You sort of glazed over this whole "scratch built from brass" part. How did you shape it?

BTW, I'm reading this full thread. Really like what you're doing.

Sorry.  I started with several strips of brass about 1/16 wide that I annealed, curved each one over a craftsman socket then started soldering them one to another like a fan creating the cup.  After I was happy with the basic shape, I filed and filed the outside until I was really happy, then I ground out the inside to be smooth and thin it out as much as possible.  There were several areas that I filled and sanded before I painted it.  If I ever do another Fort, I'll make a wood plug and drape form plastic over that.  Hell....I should make a B-17 Tail Wheel Kit.....Would anyone be interested in that?  For lets say $30.00......?  Whistling [:-^]

Funny you should mention the kit idea. Just tonight I got sick and tired of making fire bottles and O2 tanks in holders. Need quite a few for a B-17 and I have ten more waiting to build so this starts to add up. Tonight I just made masters and am in the middle of making some RTV molds - that should take care of the evil modeling elf for a few days.

I spent an entire night turning O2 tanks and fire bottles on my lathe.  I still have the large O2 tanks to due.  A few came with the True Detail kits, but not enough for the underside of the cockpit.  I wish I had the tools and know how to do RTV molds.  Someday!

Man, I getting the bug to get back on this know.

The wood floors is going to be really really thin wood that I picked up from the hobby shop.  I've got some experimenting to do, but i think it can be done.  I'm just not happy with the floor that's in there know.  I know you can't see it except through the open doors, but I know it's there and I want it right.

Thanks for keeping me enthused.  By the way, Your web site is great.

Cheers
