At the end of the day, I don't go to contests to see if I can win anything - I go to contests to talk to other modelers to find out how they do something I'm interested in learning how to do! Like a barticular painting effect or a really nice diorama piece - there's no substitute for picking the brain of the guy who actually did it.

Anything else that comes out of the event is just gravy as far as I'm concerned.

Hey I'm with you on this Bomber Boy. Modelling competitions are just politics. If you are friends with a judge you will get a good award. It's been like that at every show I've gone to. Some of the stuff that wins is really ******** compared to other models at the show and is all because the person who built the model is a person that the judge knew. I think judges should be people that go to the show that do not enter any models, but have some modelling experience. I support you on this! Yes

You know, I compete in the shows I go to, and I judge. So, I'd like to thank you for the blanket you threw over all judges. Apparently, my integrity and judgement are suspect, because you MUST be correct - the very first thing I do when I judge a model is find out who built it. If I know him - GOLD BABY!!!! WOOO-HOOOO!!!

Awesome...

Dang!!  You mean I missed out on gold with my Stryker MGS at my club's contest last year??  Silly of me to recuse myself from judging the category in which I was entered!  And to think I missed out on the kick-backs too?!  Crying

Same. too much like a 'my dad's bigger than your dad' competition to me. Besides, my skills outside of figure painting are a bit too rudimentary imo

All,

I have judged several contests in the open type judging.  One thing we make sure of is that the identity of the builder is not known to the judges, and if one of us has a model in the contest we either do not judge that category or at least not judge the model we entered.  We are specifically instructed not to review the markings and paint, but only the model builder's techniques and the outcome.  Are the wings square and even?  Are the landing gear on the ground, and are they even?  For ground vehicles, are all of the wheels on the ground like they are supposed to be?  Are there any visible seams, and if so, are they consistent side to side?  Are there any glue marks or finger prints?  These are the types of things we judge for, and in theory there could be 100% gold or no medals at all given in a category.  It just depends on the quality of the kits entered.  Each kit is judged individually.  Speaking personally, judging has opened my eyes to how to improve my model building, and has given me insight to how models I typically do not build should work.  We do our best to be fair, and work in teams so as to gain a concensus between judges.

Two pieces of advice.  First, get involved in judging a contest or 2 before you criticize too much.  Look at how the judging works, and it may improve your capabilites.  Second, I don't care how good you think a kit is, the judges are looking at the model with fresh eyes and may see something that familiarity with the kit may have covered up or the lighting in the exhibition hall emphasizes that the lighting on your bench does not.  That sucks, but it is life.  Try to learn from what was offered and take it as constructive critcism.  This is not to say the judges are perfect, we are not.  Sometimes mistakes happen, even though we try our best.  This is a hobby and it is supposed to be fun.  Chalk it up to having fun, and move on.  Getting bent out of shape because the judges didn't agree with you about the quality of your work just destroys the fun for all.

One further thought about the weathering, it may be that the judges commented about that, but had seen something else that wasn't commented on that excluded the kit from medal contention.  I know when we judge, we try to make comments on the card we use as to why we did what we did and we try to be complete.  It may be that the judges you had were more rushed, and did not make all the comments they could have in the feedback.

Whew!  Now, the pictures you show looks like you do beautiful work that you should be proud of.  Without more detail shots, I will not venture to apply the judging criteria I discussed above, but just looking, they looked great.

Take care, and have fun.

John

@James. I have never entered a competition, and doubt I ever will. If you do, and dont like the results of the judging, best you dont either. Rather take the criticism on the chin, and try and fix any "mistakes". My 2c. Very nice builds, from my perspective anyways.

Personally after attending a few local shows, I would not enter one. I use to have a classic car that I took to car shows. Judging in them has the same issues as with model shows. It all depends on the judges. Some folks are good judges and some are not. A good judge has no bias on subject or who the owner/builder is but a good judge in my past experience is not very common. Yes I have been a judge as well. The last model show I attended had 3 judges and just listening to their comments as they went down the aisle tells me it the same as car shows. On the flipside, the builders/owners have their own issues as well. I really do not like the folks who think that they should always get a trophy and create a fuss when they do not get one. I actually tried to talk to one builder on how he did a detail on his model. He refused to reveal how he did it saying it was a proprietary secret. All he did was comment on how his work was best and bad others were near him. This is the type of person who makes a bad contestant and hopefully never volunteers to be a judge.

I have nothing against the judges or contests. I like attending shows to see others work and to converse with them on how they did things. I find this has more value to me than a trophy. I build models for my enjoyment.

My biggest issue with model shows is that too much time is reserved for judging.  They close off the tables, and they make what should be a leisurely viewing of beautiful models into a rush.

Build your model your way.  Enter it in a contest to get it on the table and show it off.  To heck with the judges.  They'll ding intentional details on a model CH-53E from a modeler that works on real deal CH-53E's.  Then, they'll insists they're right, because they bought the same kit.  Judges are as flawed, or more flawed, than the rest of us.

I propose every category have a people's choice award.  Don't vote for your own model, and don't vote more than once.  I think amongst modelers, the honor system will work (most of the time).

yup.... since it was one I commented on when it was new and then died off, it popped up again at the top of "your discussions" when revived and I checked that area to see if any of my recent comments on other threads had generated a reply... surprise!!! Here's another zombie

You're models are great, but just build for yourself; not for someone else to validate your abilities. As I usually say 'the opinions of others about me is non of my business." Namaste amigo.

You know it's a zombie thread when "Manny" shows up in the dialogue. Probably a "Bondoman" in there too.

I got about half way through before I realized it's age. Good to see some of the old names again. My two pennies....I'm not particularly a conspiracy theorist, but it is interesting how the club members who throw the shin-dig run off with most of the awards. I once saw a guy place first in the out of the box category without his instructions...a huge IPMS rule no no. If awards are important, join the local modeling club as your odds will become better.
