Looking For Spark Plug Wires
Posted by David from PA on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 3:23 PM

Hello Forum Folks!

Anyone know what is a good in scale wire that I can use for spark plug wires in 1/32 and 1/48 scale?

I use stuff from electronics suppliers, but it has been getting harder and harder to find.  Radio and electronics as a hobby is dying.  Now, whenever I am ready to throw out an old piece of electronics, I tear it apart to see if it has any coils or transformers to salvage the wire from.  Coils are wound with a varnish as insulation, rather than cloth or plastic insulation (which must be stripped).  The varnish also takes paint without priming.  Coil wire is also vary fine, which is needed.

You need wire in the 26- 30 gauge sizes for most scales.

Thank you, Don. Hope I can find an old coil somewhere. It'll save me from having to paint an insulator on bare wire (which never seems to hold).

I have several cords...from old guitar cables to old airport lighting cables...that I take fine copper wire from. I store the cables in their own place, but keep lengths of about three inches handy, at the bench. In addition to that, I have a few spools of various sizes (larger).

(Those are all 1/72 BTW!)

Was a time one could buy "armature" wire in an electronics store.

Soldering wire comes in many different sizes. Very easy to bend and form to any shape. Coils of various lengths are relatively cheap too.
