My B-29 got published in FSM magazine
Posted by JohnnyK on Saturday, November 10, 2018 9:59 AM

An article regarding my B-29 that was finished in Bare Metal Foil was published in the FSM December issue. I think they chose my article because of the unique subject material. I have been reading FSM for years and I do not remember reading an article about finishing an airplane in foil.

Your '29 is a real beaut, fully worthy of being in the Magazine. Great job, JohnnyK.

Yes Johnny, I was happy to see that you got published.  I wish they would have printed more of your steps on actually applying the BMF.  You gave some excellent tips in regards to prepping the surface, laying out the foil, and how to treat areas that were painted.

I noticed that article and I thought it looked cool. I wondered how you are able to keep the seams from showing, still a mystery to me.

Congrats!

Bakster,

The trick is to overlap each new foil over the edge of the previous foil. Then trim along the joint. You should end up with a tight butt joint. I use the raised panel line or the recessed panel line as a guide when I trim the foil. Go here http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/tools_techniques_and_reference_materials/f/13/t/179536.aspx to see in great detail how I apply foil to an airplane.

Ha! That is awesome! What great tutorial and thanks for all that. I will study it in more detail when I have more time to. I want to try that.

Bakster,

Glad to help. I suggest that you use a 1/48 MIG 15, 17 or 19 as your first foiled airplane. The shape of the fuselage is straightforward  (no complex 3-D curves) and the wings are simple shapes.

Saw it. Congratulations!

Your WIP was really informative and I'll be using it as a reference if I ever attempt a BMF project.

Looks very nice, I will be using this as a referance when I build my 1/48 B-29.
