1/48 Tamiya Spitfire MK. I (New Tool) 609 Squadron (FINISHED)
Posted by lawdog114 on Sunday, July 14, 2019 3:34 AM

I'm supposed to start another project, another Accurate Miniatures B-25 but in Doolittle's markings, but I can no longer resist this kit......a beckoning me from the stash.  Alas, a new tooled model kit of my favorite aircraft during my favorite subject, the Battle of Britain.  They're giving us a new Midway movie, why not a Battle of Britain one?  We could only hope.  Anyways, I digress, Aside from Montex masks, it's being built right out of the box.  Consider this a review as well as a WIP thread as I will try to point out the pros and cons as compared to the original 1993 release.

I often like to salute the lesser known heros.  F/ Lt. Frank J. Howell of 609 Squadron is one of those.  He was a Dunkirk and Battle of Britain veteran who would score 5 kills with many more damaged. I'll be building R6691 PR-J which he flew in August of 1940 during the Battle of Britain.

I started with the cockpit.  What a beauty.  The side fuselages come with separate inserts for whether you want the canopy open or closed.  I chose the "open" option.  The fit was perfect, barely worth even mentioning.  Tamiya provides a PE fret with some integrated into the cockpit, to include seatbelts.   As usual, I used XF-1 Black as a primer under XF-71 Cockpit Green with a touch of XF-19 Sky Grey. I sprayed the area aft the seat Alclad Aluminum.

The instructions call for the seat to be cockpit green.  It's my understanding some were metal (green) and others were "bakelite", which was apparently an early form of resin. This was a red brown color and not painted.  I went with bakelite to add visual interest using a mix of XF-64 Red Brown and XF-1 Black. The belts were painted XF-57 Buff.  They were suprisingly flexible too.  Easy to crinckle up to look real, which can be challenging with PE sometimes. Their 1/32 Corsair seatbelts were like sheetmetal.  I gave them a brown wash to look dirty.

The instrument panel assembly is a multi piece. Tamiya provides decals for the dials.  They fit pretty well but of course they always move on me. Tamiya gives you PE rudder straps too.  Nice touch. I wasn't really impressed with the control stick.  It seems thick and under detailed to my eye. I remember the 1993 version looking better.

Continuing with observations, If I'm being honest, I like the 3 dimensional detail on their original 1993 MK.I better. It just needs Airscale bezel decals.  Here's the IP from my MK.I from last year done up in this manner. I think it's better.

As you can see, all the cockpit pieces fit into a "tub" that goes into the fuselage.  This was where I found the kit to be sort of finicky.  I struggled to get the pieces in there and to line up correctly. I eventually prevailed. Here's a test fit into the starboard fuselage.

I got the fuselage closed. I had no issues with alignment once I got the tub where it was supposed to be.  I must note a weird to nose piece you need to add.  Perhaps for another version?  It doesn't seem to fall on a panel line so sanding is needed.  Fortunately the fit is great.

The gearbays are way more detailed that the earlier kit and require assembly.  These were built and the wing halves (upper and lower) were glued together.  The fit was perfect.  Here I have a test fit with the fuelage and do not forsee any wingroot issues.

I should be firing down paint in no time.

Lawdog, when you get to paint, how will you do the top-side camo? Freehand or with stencils? I've seen some adhesive masks by AeroMask I'm thinking of using for my Spitfire Mk. 1. I'll be following your build closely. I'm hoping for motivation to build my BoB Spitfire, although it's the Airfix kit.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

This is how I do it.  Blue Tac rolled up into worms.  The Airfix Mk.I is a nice kit too.

Thanks Joe.  I try to stay busy so I don't lose motivation.  I'm glad you get use out of my techniques.

Looks like this one falls together as well as the Hein does. Fabulous looking pit, Joe.

Love how these new Tamiya kits just fall together. I don't have any Blu tack, but I did find a ready suppy of silly puddy at the local $ store.

Can't wait to see how well it works for painting camo patterns.

Thanks Mike.  I wouldn't say it falls together, at last in my experience, but it's a honey of a kit.

Here's blue tac.  You can find it pretty much anywhere in the office supply section.  I got mine at Wal-mart.

Joe, awesome start, and like others have said, your handiwork makes it look that much sweeter.

I too picked this one up. For whatever reason, Tamiya being Tamiya, did not include the pilot's head armour (factory issued Feb.'40) and back armour (beginning sometime in May '40).   Nevertheless, should be a great looking build.

regards,

Jack

Thanks Jack. Nice catch on the armor. I’ll have add that on my next one.

Dang...I guess I've been slacking.  I left off at assembly.  The fit was quite good, only some minor issues at the port wing trailing edge.  It was probably something I messed up in there.  The rear stabilizers are a one piece insert that slides in the back, so it's impossible to mess up getting them level...genius.

Like their new Gustav 109, the landing gear goes in as one piece and the lower panels in that area go in over it.  I blue-tac'd these in place temporarily for painting. You can see where they are proud of the surface by the carb intake.

Alclad Grey Primer to check the seams...easy work on this kit. I primed the port wing root as I will spray Alclad Aluminum here in anticipation for some chipping later (which I decided not do).

After a black preshade, I broke out the Montex.

I sprayed the fuse codes XF-19 Sky Grey then added the letters.

Next I sprayed the lower surface XF-21 Sky.  I added a touch of XF-3 Yellow to tone down the green a bit (forgot to snap a pic).  The upper Dark Earth was then done in the Tamiya recommended 5 parts XF-52 Flat Earth to one part XF-49 Khaki.  I added a drop of XF-64 Red Brown too for good measure. I then did some random fading and streaking by adding XF-57 Buff.  Nothing crazy at this point.

I used Tamiya's color profile sheet as reference then used Blue Tac "worms" for the camo pattern.

Time for XF-81 Dark RAF. Tamiya recommends some funky green mixture in their instructions.  Did they forget they made XF-81?...lol. I faded this with a bit of XF-57 as well.

Everything removed.  I have to mention the faulty Montex adhesive reared it's ugly head once again.  Like my 109 last year, these left residue behind when I pulled them off.  I can't explain it.  This time I tried taking the mask I just removed and went back and tried to rip off the left over adhesive (Like taking lint off clothing).  Fortunately it worked pretty well.   Note the gloss red.  I accidently bought The X-7 (gloss) instead of XF-7 (flat)......duh.

I then began the weathering by doing postshading and streaking with diluted XF-69 NATO Black and XF-64 Red Brown.

I noticed in photos that the underside center line got pretty grody from oil streaking.  I sought to replicate this without getting to carried away.  I used diluted XF-69 NATO Black.

I was going for a patchy, sun faded look for the hot summer of 1940.  Like I said, a reverse black-basing technique.  I started out with straight dark earth, lightened it with buff, then marbled it in randomly.  I did the same for the green.  I threw in some streaking too.  Here's the overall effect.

Exhaust stains......It took me two hours to get these right to my eye. I used XF-57 Buff first for the heat fading then I feathered in some XF-69 NATO Black for the soot.  I finished them with a touch of XF-19 Sky Grey at the base to simulate extreme heat. Again, I was going for subtle.

I added a gloss coat of X-22 cut with Mr. Leveling thinner.  Once dry, I added Tamiya's stencil decals.  These worked surprisingly well, even the wing walk lines.  Maybe their decals are improving.  Here you can see the Micro Sol on gun port tape was still drying when I snapped the picture.

Time to start on the wheels and stuff.
