Most excellent work there Eric!  I have to keep reminding myself that it is 1/72 with all your adding?  Only suggestion I may have for figures in that scale is the little plastic soldiers in 1/72 by Matchbox or Italerie?  If you do searches on a model website there are more of those you can shake a stick at. Cost about 5-7 bucks and a great variety. Details are pretty good as well. There are kits like the nato ground crew or even Afrika Horps in that scale that have ball cap style head gear. I think the Nato crew really looked  like baseball caps. I had some somewhere but can't find them. I'll keep looking!

Howdy my Squadron of Misfits!

The BVD begs forgiveness for not being very proactive here in the GB. Been very busy getting all the ducks.....er, PBY's in a row for my upcoming move.

I wish to thank you all and the lurkers for getting the GB over 10,000 views! Hardly a challenge to the NAWGB, but very respectable!

Congrats again to Richie for his Reader's Tip being published in FSM Magazine! I've seen those brushes but never made the connection! BTW.....FSM'er El Jere is featured in the Reader's Gallery with his Argentinian Grumman Duck......and the doog is lauded for his tips and techniques from a reader in the Letters pages!

Of course, the XO practically owns Reader's Gallery.......so much so that they have to space out his submissions so as not to have to pay him a salary!Laugh [(-D]

Eric! Thanks for the exploded photo! Very nice indeed! Sometimes an inspiration such as your textured flooring gives a modeler a rewarding experience whether it will be 100% visible or not. I believe your hard work is inspiring everyone!Thumbs Up [tup]

Lastly, Thanks to the XO for minding the cockpit and fluid dispersal (disbursal?) from TJAG!

TJAG.....(or tjag).....is the title (tittle?) I have bestowed upon the XO's Torpedo Juice Ale Gal!

All Hail The XO!

Eric - Your PBY is looking really good. That is a lot of work and nice detail Thumbs Up [tup] I checked for some pilots for you - None all I have in 1/72 are some odd looking Bomber dudes.  You most likely will have to scratch build ball caps out of a putty like "Milliput"

I have my 1/72 PBY back on the bench again. I have spent the last few hours cutting out a Squadron Vacum~form front dome . A whole bunch of sanding and test fitting.  Had to break out the Dremel and work the fuse a little bit as it made contact in places.  The reason for the Squadron dome is it does not have the slot in it for the gun to be sticking out. In all my reference pics of the Coast Guard PBY there is no weapon.

I guess the threw empty rum bottles at their targets Laugh [(-D]

Frank - There is nothing better then Beverages on Tap Tongue [:P]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Make a Toast [#toast]

Eric- That is some damn fine work!  Worthy of an extra mug o' torpedo juice if you asked me.  Well done mate! Approve [^]

Tis the weekend, and the lads drained the dirty fuel outta the torps and scraped a little slime outta the bilges.  Mixed with a little turpentine, it almost tastes like a daiquiri! Tongue [:P]

Another update on the crunchfest. Laugh [(-D]

The cross beams will mostly be covered and barely scene so the fact that they moved and got wonky while drying won't matter, what little will be seen you won't be able to tell they're off.

I found some fabric ribbon in my stash that has a very close ribbed texture similar to the walkways so I Ca'd a piece down on some styrene so I could use it thoughout the plane.

Should look pretty good once painted.

Bulkheads are nearly done.

Still need to put in the vertical ribbing in the hull, than I can start on adding furniture.

I also started making accessories (cargo) to go inside.

Does anyone have unused 1/72 figures with ball caps?

I'm still also in need of a pilot, just needs to be a seated figure in shirt and cap.

Basicly a bush pilot.

I'm modding a figure with a carbine, he just needs a new head.

LT - Best of luck with your Move and Relocation to a new House. Hope it is a short jaunt for the weather you are Having. If the snow gets too deep , call upon Frank and I. He can snowblow the path and I will mush the sled team in behind him to get all those models moved Safely.

To the rest of you guys in stormy weather - Keep the Ice and Snow buildup off your Wings and Fly Safe ! Thumbs Up [tup]

Yes Eric.....I recall reading that tip about the vinegar, it seems sensible.

Just don't dip it in Coca-Cola.....it might disappear!Laugh [(-D]

No, it is NOT the weekend.....but CT is socked in with a wicked snowstorm. Not a blizzard mind you, but my PBY is iced in! (Correct Johnny T?) Actually my PBY's are safely boxed for this weekend's move.

However! I laid in a few cases of ALE for the duration and there is no work today with all the amateurs on the streets!

The BVD is busy taking down the remainder of the bench for relocation, getting ready for an ale.....and watching the snowfall.

Press on Mates! Radio Shack may sell a braided cable that replicates scale mooring rope (speaker wire with insulation off?) Just a thought on a good detailing subject.

Off to work.....I may be off the site a day or two this W/E while getting settled.....but prolly not.

FORWARD!..........ALE!

The BVD!

Thanks for the heads up guy's.

I was actually looking through all the parts deciding on what to use.

Since my small birds are civilain for the most part I won't be using the guns and gun mounts.

Might try them on the large one since that one will be military.

I have read that putting the pieces in vinegar will etch the surface and help in giving the paint something to stick to.

Big Sign - Ditto [#ditto] to what Bondo said!  Absolutely!  If I make a suggestion, buy a PE set that is on clearance at squadron or elsewhere. Fold it , glue it , and paint it.  If you lose a piece, or botch the folds, it won't matter, and it'll be great practice. The old fogeysWink [;)] will tell you can get away with just using two razors or flat nosed pliers.  I disagree.  Get a bug or etchmate or hold n' fold. It will save you a lot of heartache and you'll be way more likely to stick with PE instead of giving up.

I'm still waiting for my stuff to arrive from Roll Models, though I'm not worried about it.  It takes me forever to type on here, let alone have the concentration to build anything.

Cheers,
Alex

A PE brake is a worthwhile investment. Don't use the plastic spatula things for bending, use a single edged razor blade. I always paint it in the fret and then cut it out, even so it's a big waste of paint.

It never bonds very well, so work around it and install it as late in the game as possible.

Also be critical, the PE designers include anything and everything on their pattern, but many things are better left ROUND. Like women of course, but also stuff like mooring cleats, gun barrels and flight control "sticks".

I've been reading all the posts I can find on using PE so I know somewhat what to expect.

I'm thinking of getting former tool, might go with the BUG but may go with something larger since I have a 1/72 Gato to build.

Also dug out my 1/48 B-17-G that I may get PE for as well if things go reasonably well with these birds.

The small models will also need the anchor cable added to the nose.

The larger ones will need the molded on cable removed and a new one installed.

I wonder if metallic thread would work.

After making 3 hatch doors from plastic I decided to try using one as a press mold for foil.

Doesn't look to bad and since the real one's are pressed it's accurate.Big Smile [:D]

Nice touch on the bow Eric! Yep, that should be a mooring cleat.

Keep up the good work! Having never used PE myself, I'm looking forward to your 'beginner's' technique! I have a few kits in the stash with PE and will probably buy a bending jig eventually.

But hopefully I can learn something from your experiences and pick up some AM stuff for my Cat!

Well my PE parts just showed up from Eduard.

This is going to be interesting since it will be my first time using it.

I managed to get some more detailing done on some of the bulkheads and am in the process of making the larger framing that goes across the bottom.

I also cut out the openings on the front on the little fin things where ropes are attached.

The PE set even has the T shaped piece (Cleat?) that goes in there.

Thanks guy's, appreciate the comments.

Daywalker, always happy to post reference if I have it.

I just find it strange that such prominent details are missing on kit's from 2 diffirent companies.

I can see them missing on civilian but not military.

Wonder if they are missing on the the other companies.

also on the Academy the small window on the starboard tail is not open.

It's maked where it goes and on some planes may have not been there.

Also the bump/tube thing on front of the tail fin on some planes is the intake for the anti ice heater.

I dunno about calling it crunchy? It looks pretty good. A darn sight better than smooth walls. I used a similar technic with a Czech Models Goose and was pretty happy with the results. Some of the felows here may remember it looked really crunchy until painted up then it wasn't bad at all. When closed up it really on shows that something is there. So it works.

Alotta effort there and it is looking just fine! Thumbs Up [tup]

Thought I would post an update on what I have been doing the last 2 days.

It's a bit crunchy at this point. doesn't help that it's so tiny.

O.K. Really Crunchy. Banged Head [banghead]

Not entirely accurate, but it is something to look at instead of smooth walls.

I've seen people using tape for interior structures so I thought I'd try using some scrap vinyl.

The rear Radio Room bulkhead is mainly based off the on one done in 1/48 scale in the super build on Hyperscale.

The whole thing still needs a lot of work (clean up, detailing, etc)

Next up will be the framing.

Just skimmed through my Ospery books, nothing there.

Also missing of the models is the small post next to the nose turret and anchor well.

It was removable and some planes just had a hole there whan it wasn't in use.

I didn't even know they were there?  Wow. I know Nam has the PBY in action book but it's probably packed away until his move in the begining of Feb. I have never seen those before.

Something I just noticed missing on both 1/72 and 1/48 models is the openings on the bottom in the rear tail section for the 2 tubes (markers?)

Anyone have good reference pix?

This is the best that I have.
