I'm assuming the RoG Phantom is just a re-pop of the Revell/Mono Phantom?

Part # 21 is an add-on for the IR bulge below the nose radome. Some had it-some didn't Details of when used and where I know not, but here is a link to pictures of the the Collings Foundation's F4D that has it mounted, and is noticable.

Good initiative this Group.

Looking for any photo info concerning armament F4 vietnam era.

What time period?  For a F-4C, D, E, or Navy/Marine?  Air to air or air to ground?  Let me know than I will be able to answer your question.

I've read that part 21 is a Radar warning antenna, seen it on D, not on C.

Well, just had another snow round here in Missouri, got about 7 inches, and now the wind is up and temps are in the teens, so no paint this weekend again.Bang Head

Hello!

I am the latest Rhino lover to join this project.  I'll be tying to make the old AMT F-4C/D look presentable.  I'll build OOB.  Maybe add some newer decals.  I'll have to see what condition the kit decals are in.  This should be a fun build.

Jim

PS  I do have some other F-4 kits if anyone is interested in a second kit for the build.

Hi Mike

I was wondering if I can join the group.  I started my Tamiya 1/32 F-4E Phantom II about 2 weeks ago and, coincidentally, learned about this group build just this weekend .  I've never been in a group build before and it sounds interesting.

Thanks!

Jim -- welcome aboard!

Bob357 -- by all means! We don't yet have one of those big Tamiya birds in the squadron, and I doubt you've done more than a few percent of the project in the last couple of weeks, those things are huge.

Our resident Phantom guru Berny says their -E is the most accurate of the big Phantoms from Tamiya, so I'm sure we'll all be watching with great interest!

I'll add you to the leaderboard right away. Hope you have a great time!

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Thanks Jim.

You're correct, I haven't gotten much done yet.  I've started with the bombs and weapon racks.  They are all built and primed, now it's time to shoot some color!

I'll be building the plane mostly OOB, but I'm adding True Details resin seats (this will be my first shot at resin) and some Eduard photoetch interior details.

Thanks again for the welcome!  I'm looking forward to the build!

Hi Guys,

Bit slow on my build so I apologise. Again I am sorry if this question has been asked before.

Did Vietnam era RF-4Cs have the same camo pattern? If so, is there a decent painting guide? The instructions in my Fujimi kit is hard to follow.

Thanks

When the RF-4C first deployed to Vietnam they had two types of color.  The Gull Gray over White and the standard SEA paint.  In 1965 a policy came down that all aircraft in theater would be painted in the standard SEA scheme.  The Gray over White Phantoms were deployed to Okinawa or the Philippines for a quick paint job in the SEA scheme.  After 1966 most aircraft had received the SEA paint job. The most common SEA scheme was the SEA 2 scheme though some, but not many, did appear in the SEA 1 scheme.  The reference SEA paint schemes I have on my computer are copyrighted so I can't post them.  The basic colors were FS34079, FS34102, FS30219 for topside and FS36622 for the bottom.

Thanks Berny,

Yes I forgot to mention it was for the SEA scheme only. Thanks for the colour refs but I'm pretty set with them. Just wanted to know if the paint 'map' so to speak was pretty much the same and if there was a guide somewhere.

Must of forgotten my coffee!

Thanks

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile. The F-4EJ is painted and I started decaling her about a week ago. Since many of the decals are layered -some four deep- I've been letting them dry over-night between each decal.

Odd thing is even as complex as the four layer deep Zotz decals are and as huge - the two dragons are over 4 inches/ 10 cm long the  they're working great! I can't recommend Zotz enough.

On the other hand I decided to use the Hasegawa stenciling rather than trying to find an aftermarket sheet. So far they're more trouble than than the larger, more complex Zotz decals. Sheesh I have to say again- 'Hasegawa- best kits in the world, worst friggin' decals...'

And speaking of decals- I've been meaning to thank you Tarnship for the link you posted for Micro/Superscale decals. Some there I haven't seen in ages.

you are welcome

I'd say, thank the guy that gave me the link,,,but, it's been so long I've forgotten who the modeler was

at least on that site we can see if something is running low,,,,since they are OOP's, I snapped up one of each 1/72 naval subject,,,,just so I wouldn't get "SuperScale used to make them" again,,,,,I missed a lot of decals the past few years

These Phantoms are looking Phabulous..... IF the GB was longer I would join but its just too short. I don't have that kind of time since I am back in school right now. If it were double the time I might try it.

I know this info may be late, but whats circled looks like the mounting brakets for the removable slot section of the stab, They occasionally got hit by the launch bridle as the F4 was catapulted. they were replaced often. I worked on J BIRDS in the late '70"s. The raised panel i think shouldent be raised but i think it was titanium as was the slot. Bob R.

This is oortiz10,ref. quez about revellograms stabs[I'm new to this forum thing my first reply ended somewhere else] The small ones look like the mounting brackets for the replacable section of slott of the stab, they sometimes got smacked by the bridle as the F-4 left hte cat. the larger  plate was not raised but was either titanium or stainless. I know they were common for all naval Phantoms with the sotted stab don't know about USAF for sure, ex phantom phixer VF-31&VF-74,

By all means you can join, caribwill -- what scale, what variant, and are you planning any AMs or special marking schemes?

Cheers, Mike

It is a RF-4b by Hasegawa in 1:72.  I plan on building it stock with the bright green vertical stabilizer.

Thanks

Mike,

Also request to join the Group Build.

I have a Hasegawa RF-4B/N in 1:48 and will be done OOB.  It's an old kit that needs to be added to my stash of completed builds.

Cheers,

Gabe

I would like to join, if possible.  Nothing fancy, the 1:72 Hasegawa  RF-4E Phantom II "IDF", OOB. Catching up with the GB, my apologies if my responses are, well, dated!

kustommodeler1 – That is a sweet kit. I have it in my stash, and collecting AMs for an uber build in a few years, once I have a clue what I am doing ;)  Look very much forward to your build!

Gamera – very sweet work on the pilots! Pit looks good. I am no expert, so cant tell the difference, if any!

Oortiz10 – Very nice start to both your build and WIP! And good lucky score on opening the box and garage sales ;)  Good info from Phantom experts.. one of the main reasons I join GB is to learn about the machines.  I only have two Phantoms in my stash (I know, a crime!); the old 48 scale pro-Modeller/Monogram and the 1:72 Has Im building for this GB. Lots of good info in your WIP pics; I know what you mean about “Flat black”. I have used NATO Black (also MM enamels) for subs, looks better than “plain ole” Flat Black. Sweet conversion/fixing.

Bushi – Those are great pics; the cradle of Aviation is in LI, within reasonable driving distance, but have no Phantoms.  That lead me on a short online search for surviving Phantoms, found this wiki page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_surviving_F-4_Phantom_IIs

and read the small (and very nice surprise!) that after reopening (they had a major renovation from 2006-08), The Intrepid Museum (lower west side of manhattan) has a Marine F4-N on loan from Pensacola!

http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/getdoc/a16458f1-2ddf-4e64-be20-b292c1e7af11/US-Marine-Corps-Aircraft.aspx

“This Phantom is an F-4B that was modified to an F-4N in 1971. It served with Marine squadron VMF-323 on combat standby during the failed Iranian hostage rescue mission of April 24, 1980. Our Phantom is painted as it appeared then. The aircraft is displayed on the flight deck, and is on loan from the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida.”

Now, this is not the one I am  building, but I plan a visit to the Intrepid once weather gets warmer; so if anyone wants a Walk Around, start telling me what angles/locations you want :)
