Panzer III and Its Variants GB
Posted by deafpanzer on Monday, May 2, 2011 10:06 PM

With overwhelming interest in doing the Panzer III and its variants GB, we are going for it and this is the official group build posting.

Since we are talking about many Ausf models and variants especially the StuGs, the GB will go on for a full year from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.  It would be great if we can have each model built just like we  saw in Marder Madness mini-GB earlier.  So that way we can see all models and its variants at once at the end.

The guidelines for this GB are...

  • You can enter anytime from when it starts to when it's finished
  • Any scale
  • Any aftermarket item
  • All kits must be unstarted or very lightly started
  • No crossovers of other GB's
  • A badge can only be obtained for a completed build
  • Please do a WIP or post as much as possible... we Heart photos!
  • Just have FUN!

There are so plenty of choices for us...

  • Panzer III Ausf. A, B, C, D - Pre-production models in 1937-1938.
  • Panzer III Ausf. E, F - Production models 1939-1940.
  • Panzer III Ausf. G - More armour on gun mantlet. Produced in 1940-1941.
  • Panzer III Ausf. H - Bolt-on armor added to front and rear hull. Produced in 1940-1941.
  • Panzer III Ausf. I - Variant mentioned in Allied intelligence reports but not an actual existing vehicle.
  • Panzer III Ausf. J - The hull was lengthened. Front armor increased. Produced in 1941.
  • Panzer III Ausf. J¹ - Equipped with the longer and more powerful gun. Produced in late 1941-1942.
  • Panzer III Ausf. K - Panzerbefehlswagen command tank variant with a modified turret.
  • Panzer III Ausf. L - Uparmored to 50 mm + 20 mm plates. Produced in 1942.
  • Panzer III Ausf. M - Minor modifications such as deep-wading exhaust and schurzen. 1942-1943.
  • Panzer III Ausf. N - Armed with a short barreled gun, re-equipped J/L/M models in 1942-1943.

And its variants...

  • Artillerie-Panzerbeobachtungswagen III - Forward artillery observer tank.
  • Bergepanzer III - In 1944 some Panzer IIIs were converted to armoured recovery vehicles.
  • Flammpanzer III Ausf. M / Panzer III (F1) - Flamethrower tank. Converted from Panzer III Ausf. M.
  • Minenräumer III - Mine clearing vehicle based on a Panzer III chassis with a very highly raised suspension. (Prototype only)
  • Panzerbefehlswagen III - Command tank. Heavier armor, dummy gun, and long-range radios.
  • Sturm-Infanteriegeschütz 33B - A close-support, Assault gun.  Only 24 built.
  • Sturmgeschütz (StuG) III - Assault gun / tank destroyer armed with a 75-millimeter StuK.
  • The Soviet SU-76i self-propelled gun was based on the chassis of captured German Panzer III and StuG III.
  • Tauchpanzer III - Some tanks were converted to "diving tanks" for Operation Sealion.

MajMike- Your welcome... it is going to be fun!  You can PM me anytime if you have any GB questions.  But it will cost you 229 Beer everytime...

DoogsATX- AWESOME!  I was hoping that somebody will go for this cool Vorpanzer so we have a very good chance that we will hit all models and variants now.

I can afford that.  My Panzer III and after-market goodies should arrive from Spruebrothers tomorrow.  All I'm lacking are the right color paints and the necessary skills.

I wish Sprue Brothers stocked necessary skills. I'd buy a couple myself!

Hmmmm, Panzer III's, Panzer III's...gotta root through the list a bit.

Still trying to do a "one-of-each-variant" thing? If so, I'll hold off a while, see if I can fill in one of the gaps.

Dupes- Welcome aboard! Yes  It is not a mandatory but It would be great if we can hit each variant... I think it can be done since we have a large number of interested builders.  That's why I am waiting to decide which kit I should order to fill in the gap.  Leaning between Panzer III Ausf E and Ausf M since nobody has those unless you do.  Big Smile

Rob-  Thanks!  I am really looking forward to this... Beer

Chazzer-  GB is a great place to learn and get help from others.  That's what I did when I returned to the hobby 3 years ago.  It will be my fifth GB... wait a minute... sixth GB I think.  Stick out tongue  Before you head out to buy a kit, check the list I am about to post tonight showing which variant is still available so maybe you can help us close the gaps if your store got them!

Guys- If you can look at the third list I recently posted next to GB participants.  It is our official tracking list and it will help us keep better track what variants that are still available.  With nine participants or more still undecided, maybe we can fill in the gaps if you haven't ordered a kit or have those already.

Please let me know what you think... I am open to feedback to change or improve the list.  Thanks!

I've go the E/F two in one kit, an L, a K, and the old Tamiya M.  I'm leaning toward the F if you do the E def.

satch ip-  PERFECT! Yes Now we can close two of the gaps.  Yes, you can do F and I will do E.  I assume you have Dragon 1:35 kit?  I am going to order the kit today... now it is really looking good! Beer

The hardest part of this GB will be waiting for the start date.  Guess I could work on a Tiger I or Panzer IV as a warm-up.

Poked around the stash list, found all of my III - based stuff...available kits shown below. I'll definitely be able to fill in one of the lesser-known versions! I just finished Sturm-Inf33b and StuGB's in the past 6 months, so I'll ignore those ones.

As far as the A-D, unless someone has a resin kit (Coree, maybe?) or conversion that I'm not aware of, we won't be seeing any of those built up, unfortunately.

Panzer III Ausf J, J1, K, M
Pz.Beob.IIIH
Flammpz III
StuG III A, C, D, F (I'm sure I could make an E with a bit of research as well)

Oh, quick question - are we going to include the Sturmhaubitze 42/43 (105mm short-barreled StuG F/G) as a separate variant? Look up DML kit 9058 here:

http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/dragon/dr9058.htm

Not sure why DML didn't label it as a 'StuH' vs 'StuG'.

Dupes, I wish I have many Panzer III in my stash!  Only two for me... I will let my wife read this so maybe she will let me order few more. Wink

I agree with you about Ausf A-D... that's why I put them all in one row and maybe somebody would be brave enough to step up or already has a resin kit.

If I was you, I would go either for Pz.Beob IIIH or Flammpz III.  I am surprised nobody else has signed up for Flammpaz... it looked real good and easily available at most vendors.  Maybe you can build second if you are interested later this year or in 2012.

Andy,

I'll do the Pz. III Ausf.J Smart Kit with the long L/60 cannon. This is the 1/35 scale kit number 6394 2 in 1 kit seen here:

Hey Andy, I wanted to build the "Stug Ausf G" but it looks like a lot of people are going to do that one so if you like I also have a "Stug Ausf C/D".   I could do that instead in order to get more variants marked off.  What do you think?

Nate- That's great!  Another variant marked off... I got you down for Pz III Ausf J from CB.  I am looking forward to follow your build very closely like Marder Madness.

Rob- You read my mind?!?!?  I was going to PM you asking if you can build something other than StuG III Ausf G.  Yes, it would be great if you can do either C or D!  Just let me know which one you want to build.

It is looking real good... more than five gaps were closed today alone.  More to come I hope!

MAJmike-  I know the feeling... you are not alone. Stick out tongue  Couple of buddies PM'ed me if we can start now instead of July 1st. LOL  Many of us have ongoing GBs that we need to finish by June 30th so timing is perfect.

Anthony- That's great!  Another gap closed... got you for Pz III Ausf G.  Thanks for being flexible! Yes

Dupes-  I admit I never heard about this until you mentioned StuG III G 10.5cm. Embarrassed See I am always learning something here.  I wonder why it isn't part of list I got from Wikipedia and armor related sites.  I don't see anything wrong to add this since it was built on a Pz III chasis.  Thanks for bringing this up!

Guys, the building roster has been updated.   It is really looking good with only three gaps left for Pz III and few more for its variants.

Off to work on my Chaffee now... Stick out tongue

Satch ip-  That would be GREAT if you can do K.  A year is plenty of time for most of us.  I am very slow builder.. I built only 4 kits last year and I hope I can build five kits this year.  So I am determined to build two kits for this GB.

Guys- Rob brought this to my attention that StuG III C and D are identically the same except for an onboard intercom.  So I think it would make sense to combine those two into one if you are OK with that?

Guys- List has been updated... believe it or not there is only two gaps left for Panzer III!  I expected its variants to be more challenging because there may not be available kits for those... there are 8 available gaps.  I am hoping one or two gaps to be closed by our friend Dupes... Big Smile

Chazzer, hun Hunter, filthpig- If you haven't brought a kit for this GB... it would be great if you can go for either Panzer III Ausf J' and Ausf M.  I checked there are kits available for Ausf M... I am not sure about Ausf J'.  That Ausf is equipped with more powerful gun 5cm Kwk 39.

If I may mention tht since there are so many interested particpants and many have the same panzer III's in the stash that panzer III's and there variants that i should be accepted that there be sy moe than one stug III G  as they were used in many theatres of the war ,from th eastern, and westrn fronts,to Italy. Thus three members could build the stug III G.That way we can open this up a bit more. Just a suggestion.

Well I must finsh prpping myself for the day. Have a good day Andy, and allthe rest of you styrne junkies.

Andy - a few notes here for you:

1) You have both the Pz.III Ausf. K and Panzerbefehlswagen III listed as separate entities - I don't believe that's the case. The Pzbflswg.III IS the K variant.

2) If you list the "Sturmgeschutz III Ausf G 10.5cm" as the "SturmHaubitze III Ausf G" there won't be any confusion vs the 'regular' G's.

3) What exactly are you calling J vs J1 in the III list? Are you just going with Long vs Short barrels as the distinction?

Heh...I've actually got more Pz.III - based stuff in the closet...was only listing the ones that hadn't already been taken. Between the IIIs and IVs, I kinda went nuts collecting all of the different variants so that hopefully one day I could have them all on the shelf!

Ideally I can build both a straight III and a StuG platform - why don't you put me down for the artillery spotter Pz.Beobwg.III Ausf H (DML kit 9030) and Wittman's StuG III Ausf A (DML kit 9031).

I shouldn't think you'd have any problem finding someone to do the StuGs in B, E, or F - should be readily available. Minenraumer I'm not so sure about. The Su-76i needs a conversion kit, unless someone comes out with a fresh boxing in the next year (highly possible!).
