One more thing....Ken, I haven't forgot about the pic of my Lee tank but have got a new phone last week and haven't got around to figuring out how to use it ,let alone upload to photo bucket. I did start a new aircraft model for the next Berny Build so I'll get some pics of that as well. I've only worked on the cockpit and landing gear thus far as work and medical stuff has been superseding my beloved hobby. It's not right!

Ok guys, I have seriously lost it!

I went poking around in the stash closet, and you will not believe what I have encountered!

It tells me just how unorganized I really am!

Not only was I stunned once....

...but twice!

I reached to the back of the closet and pulled out, not one, but two of these!

Not only do I have this sitting on my workbench:

I find I also have these:

They are identical, the top one being a Revell-Monogram version molded in grey plastic, and the other is the Revell of Germany version molded in silver styrene. Both are tagged as being molded in Korea and I am guessing I obtained them in the early 90's

Dug around and finally came up with the decals:

The bottom is the ROG decals which you can see also offers decals for a CF-101B. It also has more data decals, with the R-M version only providing basic markings.

I've done this all my life as I have made duplicate purchases of books, magazines, VHS tapes, DVD's, LP's (you know, those 12" flat round discs!) , CD's, tools, modeling supplies, etc. I just have too much stuff, I guess to where I can't keep track of what I have!

ARRRRGH!

Jim

Hi Jim,

First off, you can't have too many Voodoos!!

I know what you mean though about keeping track of your stash.  That is why I started a spreadsheet a couple of years ago listing all of my kits, decals, and aftermarket parts.  If I see something on eBay that looks like a good deal, I take a look at my spreadsheet first to see if I already have it.  It has saved me quite a few times.

And now I am in the middle of doing the same thing with my video collection.  My real goal though is to digitize my video collection so that I don't have all the blu ray and dvd discs taking up space.  It would also be a benefit of not having to search for the disc!

Ken

Hi Ken.

I wish I knew more about spreadsheets, and how to set them up. What I do at work, is I process customer returns for a wholesale distributor in a wharehouse. They gave me a spreadsheet to use that I can track these incoming returns as sometimes they go through various stages of approval, and by selecting a button, I can view all that are released, by customer, date, return number, etc.

That's what I would like to learn how to set up-so I could filter the results by kit manufacture, aircraft manufacture, name, number or whatever. I will have to see if I can find an online guide or lessons. Perhaps there may be information in my system.

In the meantime, the Broncos were routed in the Superbowl. I wish I didn't have to work tomorrow, as the place will be full of P.O.'d people! Some of them live, breath, eat and poop sports constantly. For me, I know that my dreary life will continue the same as always, as it always has...

Hi Mike,

No problem on the picture, whenever you get the time, I will post it.  I can't wait to find out what aircraft you are building!

I hope your ankle gets better soon.  Are you still improving?

Jim: Lol, I've bought a model I already had too, though only once so far! And I agree, can you ever have too many 101s?

Mike: Yeah, I hope your ankle is at least somewhat better. Sucks to not to able to walk without pain etc.

Hi Jim,

I don't do anything special with my spreadsheet.  I just use it as a list, grouping everything together (i.e. all the accessories to one kit are kept together).  I also keep the list in alphabetical order to make it easier to find them in the list.

What you are talking about may be more close to what you can do with a database.  There is a database program someone has put together.  It is a little salty, costing around $45.  Here is a link to it:

http://www.suisoft.co.uk/kitbase/

I hear you about the Super Bowl game.  It was a big disappointment.  I turned it off when it reached the 4th quarter.

Hi all, quick update: The ankle bone may be still infected, had MRI on Thur. see Doc tomorrow. The way it's feeling I'm pretty sure it's not the news I wanted..... I've included a pic of the plane I'm doing. Not what I thought but it was in the stash and I've been really wanting to build it. I am considering doing pre shading on this one if I have the nerve!

Oh my gosh Mike!  I really hate hearing that news!  I sure hope they can get you fixed up.  It sounds like you might be going back to the hospital for more intravenous antibiotics.  I sure hope not.

I will update the front page of the Third Berny Memorial.  You know, that kit would fit the bill for Cliff's group build too.  http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/29/t/157204.aspx  If you didn't mind doubling your updates, you could post in both builds.

Hi Everyone,

Well I am in the bulls eye of another major winter snow storm.  They are predicting between 7 to 10 inches of snow tomorrow and tomorrow night and into Wednesday.  Then we will be back to the 12 below zero temperatures again.  I would love to live where it never snows!!

Thanks for the info Ken, I'll probably do that if time allows. I can't believe more snow's on the way. Even down here our temps. are super low and freezing rain/snow predicted most of the week and most of the knuckleheads here have no idea how to drive in it. Think Atlanta, last week! I'm hoping that no hospital stay is needed this time, anything but that. But I'll do what I have to I guess... I did get my photos uploaded so I should be able to get that pic up soon.

Lol, thanks for bringing that up Ken! Mike, you're more than welcome to cross-post if you want, we've already got a couple of beautiful models complete and still with eleven months to go! I've learned a lot so far about salt chipping paint and spraying insignia instead of using decals.

I hope your ankle responds to treatment, infected doesn't sound good.

Ken: I know what you mean, I'm sorta a cold-weather person but I'm tired of this stuff by now. Wrecked my car in this misable mess last Wed and hoping to get a quote on the damage tomorrow. I'm starting to understand why people move to Florida when they retire...

Mike, I can't believe your still fighting that! I know of one other person with that persistent of an infection, but his was an extreme case-he had extensive surgery to rebuild his leg after a childhood injury healed improperly and left him almost a cripple. He had all kinds of rods and screws and had a halo around his knee for a year! He finally kicked it though.

Ken, we have had some weather this year! I know we are getting another cold snap this week with it getting to around 11 below mid week! Some snow is on the was as well, but I don't know how much!

Jim, I can't believe I'm still at war with this infection either. From what I've been told it's not uncommon for the first round of treatment to not get all the bad stuff. When the bone itself is infected it's infinitely more challenging to eradicate the virus/bacteria.The good news is the wound itself is almost completely healed. The MRI I had last week showed some infection still likely present so not sure what their plan is but I'm going to avoid another hospital visit (cute nurses notwithstanding) if possible! Finally going to get some sleep now as it's been a long day.

Mikey, I don't blame you for wanting to avoid another hospital visit! Just don't rule it out if it means beating this thing once and for all! I'm rooting for you in your corner!

To the Growler: a little bit of a setback as I tried that wash on my exhaust cones- I thought they would resist the artist oil/turpinoid mix as metalizer is lacquer based. Wrong! I had to refinish them after the wash ate off the Metalizer. A pain to mask and all, but not a disaster!

Then I came up with an idea: when I bought the fine-point Sharpie, I had to buy it as a set-2 black, 1 each of red, blue and green. I thought, what if I were to run the point of the black down the grooves between the petals of the nozzle? Maybe that would add the detail I was looking for:

I wanted subtle, and that's what I think I got. I might add a bit more. I just wish I had fixed that little divot on top from the sprue attachment point. Oh well!

I'm still cleaning up various details before the last assemblies, but thought I would do a trial fitting of the open canopy:

I also did some painting on the Voodoo cockpit:

I did learn an interesting fact about the F-101B: It was the most numerous version built and so many changes were introduced, they were going to give it a different designation, such as the 109, but then they didn't.

One of the changes was larger, more powerful engines. However, instead of a major redesign of the fuselage to accommodate them, they just allowed the afterburner cans protrude futrther outside the back end. I always wondered at this odd appearance:

I also see from this photo, that I won't need to completely clean up the seam when I put my cans together-there should be a seam there!

I do see a few things to fix as I go, such as the landing gear bays are not completely boxed in, and the air intakes under the fuselage for cooling the afterburners are closed and flat across the front. I guess you're supposed to paint them in, and you know I could never allow that!

The intakes:

They did provide trunking for the intakes and compressor fronts for the engines.

I close with a cool pic:

Hi Cliff,

Very sorry to hear about your car!  I am assuming that you are okay?  And I hope that insurance will be covering the damages.

Yes, I seriously thought of moving to Florida during my last stint of looking for a job, but my wife did not want to leave her kids.  I tried to counter with "they could come to Florida to visit anytime", but she did not go for that!

Hi Jim,

Those exhaust look great!  Good idea using the marker for those!  Yes  Yes

And nice work on the Voodoo!

Since we are posting pictures of Voodoos, here is one that was from my Dad's squadron; the 98th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS).  My Dad was an assistant alert chief for the F-101B/F alert pads at Suffolk County Air Force Base on Long Island.  It is a F-101F, which from the outside looks identical to a F-101B:

And here is his squadron patch:

You can see this emblem on the aircraft in the picture above just behind the cockpit.

Very cool, Ken! I read the "F" as a dual control version- is that correct?

10-4 on that Jim!  It was the trainer version of the F-101B.

Ken: I'm a little bruised and battered but otherwise ok. Ripped the side off the car and pushed in the door-frame, I'm still waiting for an estimate. I only have liability on her so the repairs are out of my pocket. Since she's twelve years old the Kelley Blue Book value is only about $5000 so it's not too big a deal.

Mike: I'm not sure but isn't it some sort of issue with getting the blood flow and antibiotics in there when the infection is in the bone or something like that? In any case my thoughts and prayers for you.

Jim: Krap, glad I never used a turpentine type wash on Metalizer, never thought about it taking the paint right off! You repaint looks good though, the Sharpie worked really well.

Gosh you guys just keep putting the Voodoo on me!!! I think you're trying to charm us all into building one!

Hi Dom,

I could not argue about the statement of the Voodoo being the coolest looking aircraft!  My favorite version is the RF-101C.  The longer nose really adds to the look!

Here is a picture from my Dad's squadron (15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron) while we were stationed at Okinawa:

Hasegawa put out this very plane in 1/72 scale (of which Dom purchased for me!):

That one pictured above is currently on sale on eBay:

Hi Everyone,

Well we got over 9 inches of snow last night and this morning.  So I have done some work at the bench (in between clearing the snow from my driveway and sidewalks!)

Here is a picture of the Hoosier Hotshot ejection seat (the new one) with the flash removed and ready for paint:

And here it is with a coat of green zinc chromate:

Thanks for the pics and link Ken;

It's a "snow day", so I've been messing around since morning.

Already have 9 inches, and more on the way, nice big drifts around

the house.

Yeah, that RF-101C looks familiarWink

I have the AMT/Hasegawa version, tail 41518, from the early '70's, I got it

for about $7 but the box has seen better days, squishy.

I built the identical kit about 1971, and still have some pieces of it.(sistersAngry)

Good start on the office chair Ken!

Hi Everyone!

Well I received that hole punch tool set that I told you all about a couple of weeks ago.  So I decided to give it a try.  I am very happy with the results!

Let me reiterate what my plan was when I ordered the tool set.  I have the AMS resin instrument panel and the Eduard color photo etch each shown here:

Now the Eduard color photo etch is intended to be used on a flat surface.  But as you can see, the AMS instrument panel has some nice 3D detail that I do not want to loose.  So I came up with the idea to "punch out" the dials on the Eduard color photo etch and put them inside the gauges on the AMS instrument panel.

Now here is the RP Toolz punch and die set:

Those are only the 1.9mm and 2.0mm punches that I am showing.

First I place the Eduard color photo etch into the tool and clamp it down with the desired dial centered with the 1.9mm hole:

Next I punch it out using the punch and the mini hammer that came with the tool set:

Here is the dial punched out:

And here is the dial placed inside the gauge face:

It worked!  Now I only have 16 more dials to punch out!

Hey Dom, it's good to hear from you again! Hope you're doing ok!

I'm as said fine, just more honked off about the accident than anything. As Ken said I guess she's pretty much totaled considered how old the car is. Just makes me mad since I've kept that car in pretty much pristine condition as far as possible- pretty much 99% was original.

Ken: Nice work on the seats there and the instrument panel looks fantastic! I couldn't do that myself, I'd lose most of the dials as fast as I punched them out.

Thank you for the compliments Cliff.  And good luck on your car situation.

Hi Everyone,

Here is an updated picture of the instrument panel.  I added Future to the dials that I have punched out so far:

Dom, good to hear from you and thanks for the well wishes. Ken, the photos and explanation of your instrument panel was much appreciated. It's just as you described a couple weeks ago, right down to the future. I hadn't really thought about how much better the Eduard stuff looks when it's 3D as opposed to flat. Good stuff!

Yeah, I have to agree with Mike, the Eduard stuff looks great in the 3D panel. And I'm still impressed that you have all of the dials- I'd have lost about 75% of them somehow.
