Mustang Build
Posted by modelcrazy on Saturday, January 31, 2015 10:00 PM

Mustang Build

Welcome to the 2015 – 16 Mustang Build where anything called “Mustang” is accepted. This includes the car, plane, horse etc.
EDIT: As has come to my attention, the NA-73X (P-51 prototype) and A-36 Apache dive bomber, are welcome entries.

Any scale, any material.

“What if’s” OK

OTB, AM, PE, Scratch build all OK

Crossovers OK

WIP pix a must

Dioramas OK

Partially started builds (20%) are acceptable.

You can join anytime during the builds timeframe.

If possible, please provide box art so I can put them with your name on the roster.

The build will last from Feb 1 2015 to July 31 2016 (no, this is not a typo. The build will last 18 mo.) This will give members plenty of time to join and complete a build in an environment of multiple GB’s.

Modelcrazy is the host and will maintain the roster.

CodyJ is co-host and maintains the completed build “Wall of Fame”

The badges:
designed and constructed by CodyJ. Take your pick. I couldn’t decide which ones I liked best. If you build a car, grab a car badge. If you build a plane, grab a plane badge. If you build both feel free to grab one of each

For those of you building the P-51, these websites may be helpful.

I will be building 1/48th Tamiya F-51 for the build. I have a Model Craft P-82 that I will attempt to build. This thing is a mess, It will be a kit bash cockpits from a Monogram D, landing gear and whatever else that I need to change. Right now the only parts that I plan on using are the wings and the fuselage. Bang Head

Hey. I'm missing....haha. Lawdog too.

I'm sorry John, I got you and Lawdog added now.
Do you have the kit makers in mind so I can get you box photos up?

I understand that is a "challenging" kit.  I'll be watching your kitbashing with interest. I wanted to build the p-82 at some point in the future as well.

The F-6 will be a modified Hasegawa P-51B. The early D in the academy kit and the late D is the new Airfix kit

Those sound like great builds John, I'm interested in watching you convert the B into a photo recon bird.

What scales were you planning on those builds?

Challenging is an understatement. So far I have sanded mold seams off of every piece that I have used from the kit. Cut pieces out of parts to get them to fit. Cut all the alignment pins off because they will not fit into the holes. Cut the alignment holes off because they stick out and prevent the pieces from fitting together. Sanded down portions of the wind screen so that it will fit better. Used about a 1/2 of tube of super glue just to get one fuselage buttoned up. So far the Monogram D interiors fits right in. The props in the kit are useless so I am going to use the Monogram ones. The engines rotate in opposite directions in real life but I am going to fudge it on the build. I have not checked the Monogram gear yet to see if they come close to the kit parts. If they do I will be swapping them out as well. The tires will come from the Monogram kit as will the tail wheels. I will be painting all the red white and blues markings on the kit. I think the rest of the decals will be useable. I will replace the drop  tanks in the kit with one from the spares box. They are from a P-61 kit and they look closer to the right size. That is all the items that I have been able to work through so far.  Dunce

Rob S warned me about that kit, although I still may try to tackle the merging of 3 different kits.

ok gang, I will be starting on mine soon. I've had this Microscale sheet for eons and figured this is the time for using it. I picked the Miss Miami one because  since being a Miami boy and having the same first name as the pilot, I decided it was a great omen to model it.

This sheet has three more which I will eventually get to

"Miss Miami" 1st Lt. Ernest C Fiebelkorn 77th FS 20th FG, 9 victories. That'll be a nice build PJ. I wonder if it the same mold as the Revell.

To do a quick comparison between my last build and this one: HIND E, part count - 284 in 98 steps Mustang, part count - 57 (20 of which, I'm not using) in 8 steps. SOOO, this thing's literally falling together. I kicked this off with the usual cockpit assembly, fuselage seal then wings.

Interior green applied to both sides of fuselage and rear console:

cockpit assembled and seated nicely in place:

She sealed nicely with some sanding required tomorrow, but, very little for sure:

Add a tail!!

I purposely bored out the machine gun ports to simulate the guns as being removed. The reason for this will be revealed later Stick out tongue

And my final thing for today:

There it is for today, can't drag this out any more, lol. This is SOOOO basic compared to that monster Hind that it's almost silly. Anyway, it's a very nice kit and well detailed so, I'll give it the attention it deserves.

I wonder if it the same mold as the Revell.

I don't believe so. This is the 1985 re release of the 1977 mold. I have two from 85 and one from 77.

Got some work done tonite:

Canopy installed and all sanding done. NO fill required due to tight fits!! Happy with that.

Masking laid down first, then painted a light Tamiya Bare metal coat to identify sanding problems, fixed a few, then finished off the NM finish:

Gonna let that sit overnight and continue tomorrow.

I am thinking of joining this one, huge mustang fan.  I might be in with the Trumpeter P-51 B (1/32 scale) with some resin goodies to add to it.  I would like to build it with the "Berlin Express" markings but I can only see them in 1/48 scale.  Does anyone know if they are available in 1/32?

Thanks.

Hey Modelcrazy, thanks for the reply!   I appreciate you letting me me enter the A36!      But unfortunately I have not heard back from the seller of it yet, so I do not know if the kit is still available :(    I will let you know if I get it!

After doing a search, the only 1/32 decals I found with the 357 FG are the ones I found on scalemates.
https://www.scalemates.com/search-solr.php?fkSECTION%5B%5D=All&q=1%3A32+1%2F32+p-51+decals*
But they do not include "Berlin Express".
I had the same problem with 1/32 "Cripes A Mighty". The only 1/32 decals also came with a book, and just couldn't reconcile paying over $30.00 for decals I'll only use on one plane. You would think there would be more offerings for the top scoring P-51 ace. So I'm going with "Moonbeam McSwine" .
If you can't find some decals, do you still want to go with the Trup kit?

STFD637

I'll get your box art up.

Rob,

Looking good as usual. I can't wait to find out which badge your going to chose.

Mike,

I hope that doesn't stop you from joining us my friend.

Miss America instructions were for a late war "K" with either US or 2 different RAF markings.  Got a set of instructions coming from across the big pond....6-8 weeks, not in a pdf file.  Time frame will fit perfectly for the Betty and RF4C...  good thing this one is a long time frame.Embarrassed

White decals look a little "yellowed" to me so will probably end up painting the red, white and blue on her and only using the stars out of the white decals, or use them to cut masks out to paint them.  Gets more involved and have not even started, oh well, got to try and do her justice as the build boss says she is a favorite.Wink

I actually need to try to build a Miss America myself and give it to my daughter. I have, somewhere, a great picture of her sitting the the Americas wing while we were in Reno about 15 years back. We were in the pits and I asked her if she would like a picture of herself by the plane. Well she talked to on of the ground crew, batted her big blue 12 yo eyes. The next thing you know she was on the wing. She probably has that picture actually, and can show it to my grandsons when they grow up.

5, sorry, I'll update your box art to a D.

To download the badge, right click over it and click "save image as..." and save it to your comupter. From there upload it to your hosing site (Fliker, Photoshop, Imageshack etc.). From there, download that image into your signature line in the Community Settings link next to "Manage Profile" under your name, the same way you would upload a picture in your post.

Hope I made that understandable.
