Beautiful paint job Dan. And some masterful masking too I might add.

Thanks Bish: This has been a hand full.

Thanks Joe Rix: It seems to be the metal colors that have given me trouble, the others such as Olive Drab and Insignia Yellow dried great. And can be masks with no pealing.

Thanks Eagle90: Great finish on your Ta-183's, they look great. Nice camouflage to.

Thanks Gamera.

Thanks Mustang: I think the riveting looks great. Nice engine pods.

Unfortunately there was some light pealing of X-11 Silver Chrome, but nothing like Model Master Chrome Silver.  The camera didn't pick it that great.

After Insignia Yellow was airbrushed, I masked up the bottom for Model Master Interior Green, using Tamiya tape.

When Interior Green dried I decided to re-airbrush X-11, so I masked over Olive Drab, Insignia Yellow, Flat Aluminum, the wheel wells where at first tricky, but along the inner edge there is a lip and that's where I placed the Tamiya tape. To help control the over spray I used 10psi.

Airbrushed top and bottom, letting the top dry over night then airbrushing the bottom the next day. It turned out great. Following that touch ups on Interior Green, and brush painted XF-16 on the tail gear. And with a fine brush I painted Model Master Acryl Steel over the exhaust's.

Lot's of cutting and sanding going on as of late. I've got the port side engine pod minus all the panels about ready though. I still have some sanding and filling to do at the front and rear but I feel fairly good about the progress so far.......it's just taking forever to get anywhere past all the cutting. lol

Cut and sectioned out:

Image

I cut the center strip out of the left over engine pod root and got the halves glued together this morning:

Image

I didn't foresee being able to paint the engine air intake area on the starboard closed up engine uniformly so I cut the starter assy out of the center of the air intake to paint it and will reinstall it after painting.

Bobby: Absolutely terrific finishes on your Ta-183's. The camo paint work on both of them is really well done. And, like the others, I'm a might partial to the desert scheme.

Joe: Good to see some updates from you. Excellent work on the rivets and a huge kudos to you on the recovery effort. Your efforts are certainly an inspiration for perseverence and creativity.

Thank you!  Yeah, the desert camo I think is the winner.  Thanks again!

Mustang,

Fantastic save! I kinda gasped when I saw the instructions! I'm glad you took a moment and thought it through! And I see nothing wrong with the rivets. They look great!

Yeah I kind of gasped too. lol

Thanks for the good word everybody. I was a little taken back when I first looked at the instructions myself alright. It was more like this:

Thank you for the encouragement on this bad boy. It's much appreciated .....especially when I have times at the bench like I've had. I mean.........I pulled this next stunt off but it was a bit frustrating to me.

I finally opened up the Aires engine set because I'm at that point to where I want to work on the engine mounting for the starboard engine as that's the one I'll be displaying opened up. I was just getting over all the goodies in the kit (these engines look fabulous BTW) when I turned my attention to the instructions of how these beauties mount up to the wing. At first I wanted to put everything back in the box and move on. :bag:
You guys know about where I'm at with the build right now so you can imagine how I felt when I saw this in the instructions:

Image

Yeah. That's what I said too.

I did, however , think about it over a cup of coffee and came up with this plan:

I took this:

Image

and cut the locating pins off of the base and sanded the back side down until I was left with the center strip and the offset mounting hole, made all the cuts and holes in the wing like I was supposed to and inserted everything into the openings and holes in the wing from the outside.

The results? Something I think I can live with:

Image

Ok.....made it past that hump! Movin' right along now.................................

Ok gang. Let's see if I can get somewhat caught up here.

Bruce: That's some really good progress on that Type 4. One of these days I hope to brave an armor build. Got too much in the way of line up for aircraft and automotive. I swear Bish is going to break a brick over my head! lol

Dan: Mustang looks great. All that masking and paint work is going to definitely pay off in the end.

Bobby: The 183's have always interested me and I'm glad to see some great examples being built. I'm interested to see what you're going to do with them next.

Everybody: I'll see if I can catch up to where I'm at right now on the build starting here.

For what this is worth I've got the top re-riveted but I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand I feel good about the overall riveting and on the other I don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling. :hmm:

Heck, I'd just put her on a stand. Sure you don't have any German crosses just lying around your extra decal box? Wink

I do...but they are all 1/48 or 1/32.  That would look funny...if I could even get them on!  LOL!

A stand...yeah, I might have one of those somewhere.  Funny, I keep finding stuff as I unpack.  Whistling

Eagle, those came out great! Are you doing a flight display with the desert version since the landing gear vanished?

And yeah they do have an egg plane vibe going there.

Hey Gamera, yeah, I had thought about trying to do a little something in teh background to make it look like it is in flight...maybe a desert floor in the background too.  Does look funny just sitting there with no gear huh?  That and just the decals on the tops of the wings....couldn't find the decals either.  Embarrassed

Eagle,

Great job on both of those 183's! I kinda like both camo schemes. And it's really good to see you back in the saddle!

Thank you!  It is good to be back and building.

They both have their own neatness, but the desert seems to be a bit more popular.  They both look great next to the other PM "what if's" I've done.  Going to have to get a special space on the shelves just for these now.  Big Smile

Thanks again!

Nice job on those Bobby, and was glad to have you on board. And yep, i think i prefer the desert one. I'll stick them to the front page tonight.

Thank you sir!  LOL!  Yeah, the desert one is becoming the popular vote one huh?  It was fun putting them both together and thanks for hosting a great GB!

Hi Eagle, those are neat builds Yes

They actually remind me a bit of those cartoon like egg planes some model brands have out there, though the two you presented here actually did fly.   I think I'm partial to the desert scheme.

regards,

Jack

Thanks Jack! LOL!  They do remind you of that!  Funny.  Maybe I'll get some of those egg kits and put them next to these.  LOL.  I have to laugh about the desert camo....you're the second person who favored that one.....good thing I found the second one.

Hey everyone.  Well, I finally got a chance to finish the Ta-183.  The "splinter " camo one is my official entry...the desert camo one is a bonus one (still think it's funny I found that one while looking for something else).  As you can tell on the desert one, I could not find the landing gear or decals for it.  So what you see is what you get on that one.  LOL!

Bish...thank you mate for letting me jump in on this GB and get back into the swing of things.  Awesome work everyone and thanks again Bish.

Joe and Bish I'm not the first to thank you for hosting these GB'S but you both have taught me more about techniques in building things the right way and have given me lots of motivation to try those new techniques. Plus I get to build cool planes

I hear you. Every time I think about stepping away from hosting there seems to be an interest in a given subject and off I go hosting yet another one. Don't get me wrong fellas, I have loved every bit of my hosting experience here with you guys but life has thrown me a curve ball as of this last year so it's been a little harder to be on top of it like a good host is supposed to be. I gave the idea of a co-host to help me out with the last two GB's and that hasn't worked out well at all for me. Invariably it seems like the co-host idea just doesn't hold up too well and I end up hosting th whole thing myself.  My 109 and my Red Hot and Rollin' Automotive GB's were both like that. The co-hosts just disappeared.....Hmm

Ye, i have found having co-hosts to be hit and miss. I like having the control myself and if it goes wrong, i only have myself to blame. Thats one reason why i don't want to over burden myself with to many GB's.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

BTW: Any chance of a 1947 GB for really late stragglers to the war effort??? Stick out tongue

lol, not from me there ain't. After 3 years, i am taking a break. beshides, i have the Halftrack GB running, the SW in a few weeks and the RAF in April. I have learnt my lesson hosting to many at once.

You've got that right mister! After hosting GB's for the last 3 years I think I'll be taking a break as well and be a participant for a change. lol

I keep meaning to step away from hosting for a bit, but i don't seem to be able to stop my self hosting new ones. I think since i hosted my first one, the 8th AAF GB back in 2010, there has not been a time when i wasn't hosting one. And i think i already have enough planned to fill the next 2 years which will take me up to 2019 and the 80th Anniversay GB's. That means i will probably get a break in 2027 Bang Head

And if this hasn't been said lately thanks again Bish for running these. Bow Down

I must admit i do enjoy it. The GB scene here is not quite what it was a few years back, but as long as there is even a few dedicated people taking part, that makes it worth it.

Matt: Nice job on your Do-335.

Eagle90: Great start to your Focke Wulf.

Thank Joe Rix.

Thanks Lostagain: Yes straight out the can, smooth and even. I see the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter. Excellent detail work. Balsa wood always comes in handy.

68GT: Nice RLM grey scheme on the 229.

Bruce: Nice airbrushing on your Type 4, sillyputty always comes in handy with camouflage.

Looks like I spoke to soon, thought that Tamiya TS-30 would seal over the Model Master Silver Chrome but the TS-30 would not cure to mask over. So I decided to strip the paint down to the primer and start over. I used orderless mineral spirits, went right through both Tamiya and Model Master paint.

After I washed the plane down with soap and water on Q-tips, I airbrushed on Tamiya X-11 Silver Chrome. About three to four light coats. For some reason X-11 didn't dry enough to mask, silver like powder would come up on the tape. So I sealed the X-11 in with X-22 clear, this has seemed to work.

After allowing the X-22 to dry I masked up for XF-62 Olive Drab, XF-16 Flat Aluminum & X-2 White. The X-2 white was put down first, for Model Master 1708 Insignia Yellow
