DINOs and DIOs
Posted by waynec on Sunday, December 20, 2015 7:17 PM
JIBBER and I are starting a Dinosaur GB for 2016
Dates: 01JAN16 thru 31DEC16
___________________________________________________

0. There aren't that many kits so don't worry about 2 or more folks building the same kit. Colors will vary from artist to artist as will the presentation.
1. It's DINOSAURS. Kids love them, Adults love them. There were 4 Jurrasic movies, not to mention Godzilla. Even better no one knows what they looked like so, no matter how you paint them, you aren't wrong.
2. Stand alones or part of a diorama with another dinosaur or a vehicle/people, civilian or military.
3. Any scale.
4. Crossovers are fine, especially if you are doing a vehicle or figure in another genre, ie armor, airplanes.
5. IF YOU ARE ADDING ANOTHER OBJECT, please post your build of it in the appropriate forum.
6. Post here or PM me (WAYNEC) a picture of the box art of the dinosaur and the vehicle if a diorama.  i will post it on the roster page along with finished builds. you
7. Because of the way the forum works, I will initiate the GB and will update the roster on the home page but JIBBER will be posting comments so send stuff to either one of us.

Wayne,

I planned on doing two Dino's, a T Rex and a Spinosaurous both in 1/24. I just seen that we already have a Spiney on the roster but because of all the different ways of painting and displaying them, I think they'll look a lot different when it's all completed. Sorry Bruce I surely dont mean to copy on your entry. I think this will be a fun build for all of us.

Bruce again I'm sorry and if you want me to withdraw it I'd have no problem with that, I still a a T Rex to build.

I'm in but I'm not sure with what yet. I have a resin Albertosaur and a Lindberg Velociraptor that I'd like to add feathers etc to try to make it a little more accurate.

I gave my grandson a Triceratops kit for his birthday. I was going to build it with him, and can enter it.

Not sure when we'll get to it though.

Terry,

No need to be sorry, I have no problem with you building the Spinosuarus, and I look forward to seeing it finished! I picked the Spino because that was the one my 7yo daughter (My future archaeologist!) wanted me to work on first.

Bruce again I'm sorry. I may just use it somewhere else, but we'll see. I can't wait to see all these started, what are you planning with Spiney?

Terry,

No need to be sorry, there are not a lot of Dinosaur kits, so I expected, and welcome, more of the same kit. Like you said, there will be mulitple colorations on these finished kits. I'm really looking forward to seeing them.

Now, on your question. I hadn't thought yet of what I wanted to do, but, your question sparked some good thoughts. I've seen a few of these kits built at the National convension and they build to look like the box art. The box art makes it look like the Spino is defending its catch. You got my creative juices flowing! Maybe it's defending it's catch from another Spino?!?! I'm going to have to think about this a bit more!

This is going to be a great GB! I'm glad you and Wayne thought of it!

Bruce my first thought was that of Spiney holding the fish in its mouth instead of holding it down but the way Pegasus make them that would be somewhat difficult. I next thought of having a couple smaller dino's eating away at the fish when Spiney shows up and scares them away. I think I'd seen a dino croc somewhere, now that would be cool if it was partially underwater sneaking up behind them. I think this is what makes dinos so cool, theres so many ways to work with them and nobody around to say we did it wrong.

Everytime I think of something I always cause myself more work.....

Well, I dug out the Spinosaurus kit. I forgot how heavy these kits are! Anyway, still trying to figure out what I want to do with a dio. I'm going to take a few more days to come up with something good that will not leave the kit is pieces. LOL

Terry, I agree, you'd have to do some major surgery to Spiney's mouth to make it look like it's holding the fish. And we won't have to worry about too many cavemen telling us, "dinosaur wrong color"!

Looking forward to getting started!

Nice collection of critters there Wayne. I want to make a Steve Irwin joke about the guy with the giant prehistoric croc there...

I'll try to get to my stuff when I clean something off my bench.

Figures section, good thinking guys. I like posting my builds as WiP threads as well, but couldn't think where. I forgot the figures is also the Misc. section.

I think i am pretty much setteled on the Tamiya T-Rex, the diorama one. And i have an idea for a scene thats inspired my Karl Logans WW1 tank memorial build he did recently.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Man, I'd love to do this GB, but I don't want to commit to something that I don't know if I'll get around to doing. 50/50 as to whether I'll participate, but I'll try.

Do you know of any good kits out there? I'm having trouble finding a goldilocks zone between assumedly poor quality cheap kits, and super expensive vinyl/resin kits.

Do a search on 1/35 scale Tamiya dinosaur kits. They seem to be reasonably priced.

Tamiya has 1/35 triceratops, stegasaurus, raptors, new t-rex and older more erect t-rex, mesozoic critters, second pack of critters and i think a brontosaurus (though that may be pegasus 1/24)

Yes, those look nice! What are your verdicts on the molding quality of the Tamiya and Pegasus kits?

I can't speak for the Tamiya kits, but, the Pegasus Spinosaurus is outstanding! Very top notch kit. I'll post pictures here later.

Tamiya offers Diorama Dino kits. I haven't personally built any but I know Wayne has some. Sure would like to see a couple of them here.

Terry,

If all goes well, you will see another build from me in this GB. And it will include one of these Tamiya diorama kits!

hogfanfs you could always prime and paint the base a ground color, "paint" it with white glue and add turf. i have done this and drilled some holes and added some tall grass.

since my freehand camo job on the autoblinda went south today (Vallejo may not be the best paint for low pressure work) i pulled out the Tamita triceratops and got the legs, body, and head halves together and puttied. this should be easier than the raptors as there is no real surfice scales pattern. i may need to stipple some Mr Surfacer to get a scaly texture prior to priming.

That looks cool, Bruce. First time I think I've seen one of the Pegasus kits mocked up, I may have to try one myself.

Wayne has a good idea there with the base, though maybe for the river bank there you might paint it tan, spread some white glue on it and cover it with sand?
